This might sound kind of weird, but when I feel nauseous, a lot of times I don't feel better until someone massages the back of my neck or my shoulderblades. Does anyone else have this happen? Is there some kind of connection? The only thing I could think of is that I think the balancey part of the brain is toward the base of the skull.

Just wonderin'.

I suspect the nausea is causing you to tense up. The tension probably reinforces the nausea. Massage helps with the tension.

Why would it focus in the shoulderblades? You'd think it would focus more in the stomach or lower back.

Tension frequently focuses in the neck and shoulders.

Can tension cause nausea in the first place, do you think?

It very much can. If you're tense, you're likely stressed or anxious. The body produces chemicals in case of a fight-or-flight situation and the stomach is super-sensitive to them.

The stomach is kind of like a muscle and close to many others, so if you're tense its probably screwing with your digestion.

Muscle aches and nausea go hand-in-hand with me too.

I never have anyone around to massage my neck and shoulders, so I wouldn't know if that helps. Sounds nice, though.

For me, the thing that helps most when I am feeling nauseated is throwing up. In fact, when my kid used to come to me and say "I feel like I have to throw up", I'd tell him to go into the bathroom first and go throw up, and then let me know when he was done. If he came out and said that he just threw up, I'd look at him, and say "I don't think you're done. Go back until you finish."

Now I'm wondering if I should have given him a nice shoulder rub instead.
