http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oq7a7Cw2SP8 This one is pretty cool. It's a bunch of guys pulling off some crazy jumps. These videos have been linked on Hatrack before, I think, but they're definitely worth watching again.
btw Fitz, I just watched that NIN/Star Trek one. I hadn't watched it earlier because I really dislike Star Trek, but that video was awesome. Though I wouldn't suggest most hatrackers, unless they're familiar with Nine Inch Nails, watch that. It's probably a pretty offensive song for most.

That Lucas LOTR movie is really some of the most cogent criticism of Lucas-syle film making i've ever seen: "He's certainly a strange man... it's an interesting way to make a film... certainly not a good way."
And this gem: "I thought, you know, that since LOTR was a pretty serious movie dealing with, you know, some serious issues, that in the scene with the battle at Helm's Deep, I would have a banana... slapping itself in the face"
"so we just all got together and slapped ourselves in the faces, and slapped bananas, and slapped our faces with bananas, and the nwe scanned all that in to the computer, you know, and rendered it, and manipulated it, and then we went back, you know, and added eyes, and bruises, cause THAT was the detail that mattered to us."

This song is a staple at our weekly karaoke nights. I sing it, while a friend of mine who's an ASL interpreter signs it. The signs are unbelievably dirty-looking, even considering the lyrics. It's always a crowd-pleaser.
But now I'll think of Kirk and Spock while I sing it.

I am learning more from this series and from Connections 2 and 3 than I did in 12 years of schooling.
Tex Avery's comedic masterpiece, surpassed only by the sublime King-Size Canary.

(The scene where Marc Anthony thinks Pussyfoot has been mixed into cookie dough and baked in the oven may be -the- most horrible-yet-funny scene of any cartoon ever made.)

Okay... Sarah Silverman baffles me. On the one hand, I find myself sometimes laughing at her, just because she's so outrageous. A rabbi I once knew said that humor is the incongruous, and that we laugh when things are out of whack. But she's gross. I mean, she's honestly gross and nasty, in a really filthy way sometimes.
I can watch Lisa Lampenelli, with all of her ethnic slurs, and I think she's hilarious. Because she's clearly doing it for the fun. With Silverman... I don't know. There's something really almost evil lurking there. But then, I laugh at her sometimes. Usually, I just blush, though, and wonder how she can possibly not blush as well.
Was that completely made up, btw, or did she actually break up with Jimmy Kimmel using that video? I mean, he didn't seem amused, and the look on her face at the end of the video... Ick.

i know. in case anyone is unfamiliar with the original video, it's a guy who travels all around the world and dances everywhere he goes. He does this in some really beautiful locations.
The first one became popular enough that he did another one, this time all the people who wrote and emailed him after the first one joined him in dancing.

EDIT: So yes, it can be cute when a 7-year-old sings a song that mentions alcohol and pot.
Posted by Strider (Member # 1807) on :
while i know stoned normally refers to marijuana, I always assumed the song was talking about coke there(assuming it was more of a catch all term in the past and has only recently been left to the exclusive domain of marijuana). Since it was referring to business men, and coke has always stereotypically been their drug of choice. Though, the song might predate the popularization of cocaine in the business community, in which case it'd more likely be pot, not sure. anyway, random tangent, sorry.

Getting stoned can mean just booze and not drugs, particularly in the context of that song.

I like the amateurish first one better, but you gotta give props to the second production.
*warning* it is a little more graphic then the first one.
EDIT: I really like how they use the light sabers and force like you would expect a fighter in the StarWarsVers to use them---like the fact that they recognize the light sabers can cut you by barely touching them and how aggressively they used the force to get the upper hand in a battle.

Proof that by 1994 the TMNT franchise had completely derailed: The live action Christmas special. If you thought the Star Wars holiday special was bad...well, you'd be right. But this equaled it for sheer wretchedness.

This 1987 Christmas Special was one of the last such specials Jim Henson participated in. Only home-recorded copies contain the entire special- Music rights and other issues have made most region one DVD releases of the special a hash. And the three branches of the Muppet family tree are all owned by different companies these days anyway.
Still...watch it. Enjoy the holidays with the Muppets, when they were in their prime.

All my girls have crushes on musicians...my 11 year old crushed big time on the guy who plays piano and teaches choir at our church. My oldest is 16, so you have plenty of time to learn piano before she would be ready to we. She says piano is more impressive to her, but she loves to listen to the violin. Our church musicians on Sunday morning are a pianist, a violinist, and a cellist, and I absolutely love listening to them.

Here's some cool videos I've been watching recently(apologies if any of them are repeats):
The Piano - sad and sweet animation to "Comptine d'un autre été", a song from the Amelie soundtrack.
Bathtub IV - A very cool video done in a time lapse style mixed with a style of photography called " tilt shift". from wikipedia:
quote:Tilt is used to control the orientation of the plane of focus (PoF), and hence the part of an image that appears sharp; it makes use of the Scheimpflug principle. Shift is used to change the line of sight while avoiding the convergence of parallel lines, as when photographing tall buildings.
In many cases, "tilt-shift photography" refers to the use of tilt and a large aperture to achieve a very shallow depth of field.
From what I understand the video uses that style and selective blurring of the image to achieve a miniature effect in the film.
wingsuit base jumping - this might be the coolest thing I've ever seen. could you imagine what it feels like to fly? well these guys can.

That was amazing. Absolutely amazing that she could tell such a moving story given the medium, and that it was at once both emotionally effusive, rapidly changing, and so artfully done are all big shocks considering she's just moving sand around.
That was really something.
The Pre-Lady Gaga performance was nice as well. She did come off very Norah Jones like. That makes me want to hear her try her hand at something like "Cry Me a River" rather than "Just Dance."

There's some mild sexual content, but i can't imagine it's any worse than what regularly airs on tv.

I posted a TED talk by Rebecca Saxe some time back where they used TMS on the RTPJ to change peoples' moral judgments of other people's actions, disregarding intent, and making judgments based solely on utilitarian considerations. They think the RTPJ is important in "Theory of Mind", both from that research, and other research that shows that the RTPJ develops around the same time that children begin being able to consider the point of view of others. It was a great talk.

If that were the case I'd expect more variations in types of sounds. I mean, they've got to be able to pronounce more than one consonant, at least by accident on occasion. I think they found one word that works for them and they like it so much they just don't see a need for anything else.

Bingo.
That's why I say they don't know any words -- they don't have any notion of sounds having meaning. They don't know what words ARE.
And they actually used two consonant sounds, one with much higher frequency than the other. They were "d" and "m". Those are the two consonants babies of every culture learn first (for physiological reasons), and thus the reason "mommy" and "daddy" almost always feature those sounds, in many languages.
Posted by Raymond Arnold (Member # 11712) on :
Do "mommy" and "daddy" tend to always get the same consonants associated with them?
Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :
When baby names for mother and father don't feature "m" and "d", they generally feature the also-early "b" and "p". There's a great paper somewhere online analyzing not only the incidence of these sounds in baby names for parents (and grandparents), but the change from formal parent names to informal ones over time in several languages.
I can't find it now, to my annoyance.

That Bronte video is excellent. Reminded me of Miyazaki. All his videos are out there. He calls them "film clips".
Posted by Lyrhawn (Member # 7039) on :
Bronte certainly has the quality of a film clip. It's practically a short film, with a very clearly defined plot and message. Miyazaki was my first thought as well.

No. Was it actually good?
The problem with Chronicle isn't the premise, which isn't really original, it's twofold: 1. The shadowy hyped advertising, and 2. The fake documentary style.
Those movies, stuff like Cloverfield, always come out with big conceptual hype, and almost always fail to meet expectations.

Anthonie: Without knowing the actual girl or father in question, I hesitate to judge anybody. Sufficeth to say, I can envision reasonable scenarios where that approach is the correct one. Maybe not in the particulars, or the word choice, but in principle. And lets be honest, when is discipline ever executed perfectly?
Sometimes what a child needs most, is to have their idol taken away, so they can see clearly what they've been undervaluing.
In any case, I don't feel that father was acting immature at all. He was very calm and collected the entire time. He certainly doesn't strike me as the brash vindictive type.
Posted by Anthonie (Member # 884) on :
It wasn't what he said. His demeanor and word choices weren't the issue. The issue is that he used a GUN to blow a laptop to smithereens, and then posted the video on youtube. Such sensational destruction of property, not to mention the public bravado of showing it off to the world, seems juvenile to me. He could have simply taken the laptop away. Better yet, he could have given it to a school or charity or something.
Also, I have a severely sore spot when public humiliation is used as a form of discipline by parents. It happened all too often in my household. If the goal is an immediate modification in behavior, public humiliation works, but I have never seen productive long-term results. Usually it instills bitterness into the relationship and destroys trust in the long run.
(I shudder to think how his daughter is feeling at the moment to know that over 3.7 million people have watched her dad shoot up her laptop and listened to her personal Facebook postings.)

We don't know that this is characteristic of his parenting style as a whole. As he indicated, the reasons he made the video was because she acted the way she did in public for everyone to see, so he punished her in front of everybody. In part, because he wanted her schoolmates who may have been encouraged by her bad behavior to see that the consequences.
It's not as if he tied her up in front of the camera and forced her to watch while he blew away her laptop. I can see how in general a private conversation is best, but I can also see that the father was upping the ante because she clearly hadn't heeded the warning last time.

Hahahaha, god, what a child that man is. The daughter is unreasonably and dramatically petulant, you say. I wonder where she gets that from!
Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :
I'm really conflicted about that video, and I imagine any parent would be. See, her Facebook note really was mortifying; if my daughter ever posted anything like that, I would conclude that I had completely failed up to that point as a parent and decide that drastic measures were necessary. If this were in fact the second time we'd had that experience, and I'd warned her that there would be serious consequences if she repeated her mistake, I'd feel compelled to follow it up.
Permanently depriving her of her laptop is, I think, a perfectly appropriate response. Even videotaping a speech in which I explained why I'd be taking away her laptop, and the reasons I was disappointed in her, makes sense (although it's probably not something I'd do); I wouldn't trust that I'd be able to get everything I wanted to say out as articulately -- especially given the risk of interruption.
But he did two things that give me pause.
The first, of course, is the whole shooting bit. Now, I'm not exactly a member of the "gun culture," and he and his family obviously are, so I've tried to examine this outside of the context of my own biases and imagine if I, say, bashed her laptop repeatedly with a sledgehammer on video. And what I still get out of that is "I am very, very angry and want to destroy something, so I will destroy your laptop instead of you." When I look at it that way, I see a man who has trouble controlling his own impulses, even when they get in the way of his intentions and purposes. Speaking for myself, I would have been far more likely to sell the laptop and give the money to either a charity or the "cleaning lady" his daughter had insulted; I think that act would send a less muddled message.
The second problem is with the public airing of the video. I understand that he felt his daughter had already violated the confidentiality of their family by ragging on him over Facebook, and so this was an appropriate "revenge" -- but I'm not sure that I'd want the desire for revenge to be a motivating factor in my parenting. I have trouble imagining what other positive benefits he'd expect from making the film public, unless he felt that his daughter's friends were a major negative influence on her and thus wanted to indirectly send them and their parents a warning message. If so, though, I think his delivery obscured that point. It's more likely that he feels that shame is an effective deterrent, and that publicly shaming his daughter will have the effect he desires. While that's possible, my own belief is that people who are primarily prevented from engaging in bad behavior by shame are people who have already been raised incorrectly; if you don't respect your parents enough to express respect for them even in private, having them shame you into propriety is only going to plaster over the underlying problems.
That said, I think the followup statements Sean has posted speak largely in his favor. He's not the kind of parent I'd want to be, and I imagine he probably has to walk a finer line with his own vices than he'd like, but he's clearly trying. I suspect he's very much like his own father, based on what he's said: someone who let things go until it embarrassed the family, then blew up and tried to make a big point out of it. That's parenting from the "fear" side of the spectrum, and that's not always a horrible thing; I think it should be every parent's last resort, though, since parenting from a position of principled aspiration and mutual respect seems to generally work out better.

Like others, I'm much more impressed with Dad after reading his responses.
The gun does not bother me. Probably because I am part of the gun culture...we own guns, my kids shoot guns, my 11 year old asked for a .22 rifle for Christmas a year ago.
It sounds as if he has sat down and discussed things with his daughter and that is good. Honestly, the most impressive thing he did, for me, is when he told his daughter that the woman who worked for them trading housekeeping services was deserving of much more respect. The child sounded to me like a privileged young woman who felt she was above someone who worked hard for a living - and some 15 year olds who have been raised in middle-upper class homes do indeed need to be taken down a notch or two at times.
I've been through that with my own kids. My husband and I have been through times when we had to decide between buying food and paying the light bill - my kids have never experienced that. Both my husband and I make more money and are more financially secure than our parents were, so our standard of living for our kids is higher than our own was. It's hard for kids who have lived in relative privilege (by no means do I consider us rich, but we are definitely comfortable) to not look down on others unless you make a point as parent to instill some sort of values in them - and even then you have moments when you think you fail. I see this Dad as struggling with that same type of issue. Maybe I'm projecting, but I can see him as coming up having to work hard and learning the value of hard work and now believing he has failed in teaching that same sort of values to his daughter.
Then there's the panic that you don't have much time left - she is 15, almost sixteen - she will soon be considered an adult...so if he wants to make an object lesson it needs to be quick and drastic to make a point.
Would I have done the same? Probably not exactly the same way....but I would have felt compelled to do something. I can empathize with what he went through, for sure.

You know how it is easy to (rightfully) hate on parents who want to be their kids' friend? I think this guy is just the angry version of that: his anger is more "I'll show you!" and less "You did something really wrong."

I actually didn't find myself all that upset. I don't think this was the best parenting ever, but I think it was dramatically better parenting than some others I've seen. In particular after reading his followup commentary.

His followup commentary only shows that he is not out to lunch completely as a parent. It still doesn't really make any case for why his video isn't headslappingly bad. This whole thing the dad is doing is just a great way for him to say loud and clear: "this is just what I'm like, and you can bet money that it's a big reason why my daughter's like what she's like in many ways. And now I'm going to drive it in publicly in a way which will probably only cause more problems between us than it will solve, because I'm probably not real good at figuring out or admitting to myself how much of this is really about teaching you a lesson, versus acting out my embarrassment through publicized revenge"
Well, certainly, his revenge is complete, via public shaming that practically everyone she knows will have seen and watched by now. Good job, dad. It's guys like you who keep therapy a growth market, haha.

Really? You know that for a fact, that it would make the same impression to his daughter as destroying the laptop?
And frankly, he has explained already that he had taken it away several times and it didn't work in the long run. He now tried something differently.
You aren't explaining how what he did was BAD, you're effectively merely arguing against it on the sole basis that it was *impressive*. Since his purpose was to make a lasting impression on his daughter, that's an argument in favour of his actions, not against.

quote:Originally posted by TomDavidson: I'm really conflicted about that video, and I imagine any parent would be.

I agree 100%.

I agree 95%.
Parents don't have to be perfect -- none of them are. It's a very difficult job and no one really knows how to do it, so I generally try to avoid being too critical of peoples parenting decisions as long as they aren't clearly abusive or neglectful. If they are sincerely trying to be good parents, there are doing better than many.
That said, there are some "parenting styles" that drive me up a wall and punishing kids publicly is one of them. It's inappropriate on all kinds of levels ranging from making others uncomfortable to being at least bordering on emotional abuse. It makes me, and apparently a lot of other people, feel more sympathy for the kid and less for the parent. And even if there were nothing else wrong with it, it's pretty self defeating for the parent to correct their child in a way that causes others to come to the child's defense.
But the thing that makes me really critical of this guy is not how he punished his daughter, but that he posted a video of himself unloading a hand gun into his daughters computer on youtube. I loose my temper from time to time, I think most people do. But it's not something I'm proud of. Once I've regained my composure, I'm always ashamed at having lost my cool. I think that's why we call it loosing your temper. It's something mature adults try not to do. The things people do when they've lost their temper, are things they wouldn't do if they were the person they'd prefer to be. So I think its inaccurate to call what this guy does a temper tantrum. There is no way most of us would do that kind of thing unless we were throwing a temper tantrum, but not this guy. Unloading a gun in to his daughter computer is something he's proud of. Something he want the whole world to see. And being proud of that kind of thing is far worse in my opinion that having done it.

I can see confiscation until the age of adulthood. But the way things actually happened, I dunno what that dude was teaching his daughter other than he thinks it's laudable to destroy other people's property. And maybe that using a gun is the solution to every problem.

Both of them (twins) got .22's that year. My son's was black, my daughter's was pink. She's a good shot. We have some land some friends let us use to set up targets and shoot. She can take out a paper target affixed to a hay bale, let me tell you!

Oh my God. But just please tell me she doesn't carry her pink .22 in her bag together with her pink iPhone. Or do, that would be awesome
That clip puts Michael Bay to shame. I've never seen so many things unnecessarily and inexplicably explode before.

Pink iPhone, please.
She has a pink android phone.
And no, she doesn't carry her rifle anywhere. If she ever goes shooting, it's with my husband and full gun safety rules are followed. Though honestly, we don't do much shooting anymore. She's playing soccer and super busy, and ammunition is expensive and the gas to drive to somewhere safe to shoot at targets is even more so.

So maybe I shouldn't be amused by this, but it's in the library at my University, so I can't help but chuckle at the effects of Finals week on poor undergraduates. Though from what I hear it actually was over a girl.
