Long story -- short version is that I can't configure outlook/outlook express to send email from my comcast account because apparently Comcast blocks ports 25 (and 587), and I haven't been able to find out which one I'm supposed to use.

Does anyone know?

You should be able to connect to their SMTP server to send email.

Looks like that is smtp.comcast.net .

That's the one I've been using. It doesn't work at all :-/

Still no luck. I wonder if the fact that I'm away at college has anything to do with it?

Sucess!

I'm using the university outgoing mail server as my outgoing smtp server for the comcast account.

Comcast blockes access to their smtp server from non-comcast IP addresses.

Aw man, I could have totally asked a friend in our enhanced customer care area, given you an answer as if I knew it, and totally looked all smart and helpful.

m_p_h: that makes sense. It seems like it might have the potential for abuse.

In any case, I'm wondering if I might get in trouble for using the university server for Comcast stuff.

Nope, if they have it configured to accept it, they don't care.
