Because there has been some confusion on this issue, I am going to write down the full and exact rules of Colaboks, as determined by the Third International Colaboks Convention in 1993. I hope this will ensure that there are no further quarrels or accusations of making rules up as people go along; you know who you are.

1. Object of the game

i) The purpose of Colaboks is to be the first to spot VW Beetles and claim them with a shout of 'Colaboks!' Each car claimed in this fashion gives one point, except as outlined below; the winner is the one with the most points at the end of the trip.

ii) The game may only be properly played while in a car with the engine running. Although there may be some amusement value to claiming Colabokses on foot, while bicycling, or such, such games are not official. Further, any given game ends on the turning off of the car's engine; all points are then counted, a winner is declared, and a new game may begin. If all players agree, this rule may be waived for short rest stops.

2. Scoring

i) As noted, points are scored by the first shout of 'Colaboks' upon sighting a VW Beetle - henceforth referred to as 'Colabokses'. If, however, it turns out that the putative Colaboks is in fact a car of a different make - Mini Coopers, in particular, can easily be mistaken for Colabokses from the front - one point is lost. This may lead to players having a negative score.

ii) If the Colaboks has its engine running at the moment it is claimed, one additional point is scored.

iii) Colabokses coloured black, silver, or gold give one additional point.

iv) Colabokses coloured red, green, yellow or white also give one additional point, provided that the claiming is done not with a shout of 'Colaboks', but instead with these alternative claims :

a) Red : "Rødbrusboks". (For the non-Norwegian speakers, it is pronounced 'rub-ruse-box'. The literal meaning is 'red soda box', which may be substituted on agreement of all players.)
b) Green : "Spriteboks".
c) White : "Coca-Colaboks".
d) Yellow : "Soloboks". (Named after a yellow soda sold in Norway some years ago.)

v) If a red, white, green or yellow Colaboks is claimed with the wrong cry, such as saying 'Spriteboks' or 'Colaboks' for a red car, one negative point is assigned. The Colaboks then counts as claimed, and may not be taken by anyone.

vi) Colabokses in the old style give one additional point. This means that a maximum of four points may be scored from a single Colaboks; for example, a yellow, old-style Colaboks with its engine running, claimed by the proper shout of 'Soloboks'.

vii) By consent of all players, additional points may be handed out for particularly special Colabokses, such as rainbow-coloured ones, or other unusual paint schemes.

viii) There is not an additional point for claiming blue Colabokses with 'blåbrusboks', in fact this is a negative point. You know who you are; let's have no more of this nonsense.

ix) Where negative points are assigned, they are never modified by the Colaboks in question having its engine running, its colour, or other conditions. At most one negative point may be given per claim.

x) The Citroën 2CV may be claimed with a shout of 'Hesteboks' (literally, 'horsebox', from its appearance and horsepower); this gives one point, or two if the engine is on. No modifiers for colour are assigned.

Now that you know how the game is played properly, you can begin arguing over the important things, such as whether a 'lime' Colaboks is counted as a Soloboks or a Spriteboks (obviously it was a Soloboks! I mean, come on! But sheesh, some people have no sense of colour at all.) Have fun!

I, for one, have always shouted "Punchbuggy!" and proceeded to pummel the person sitting next to me, ending with the all important "No punch backs".

I'm somewhat confused though as to 2.v. If I were to see a red, green, white or yellow 'Colaboks', and yelled out 'Colaboks' instead of the name corresponding to the color, I would lose one point? Even though it's true, it is a 'colaboks'?

Indeed you would. Coming up with the correct name is the whole point!

I too played the Punchbuggy game, Dr. Strangelove. We added in the color though ("Punchbuggy blue!" :beatings: "No punch back").

Out of curiosity, KoM, do these points earn you anything other than bragging rights, or would there have to be agreed upon stakes? Also, it's heresy to count the new bugs.

I said the new bugs don't count! [No No]

This means I get to give out one free pummelling at the time and place of my choosing.

What's this "no punch back" crap? What are you all, wussies? You tell me that, I'd laugh in your face and hit you in the arm until it fell off.

Gah! Is everybody out to get me?

This reminds me of the punching game. Last time I check, I had twenty-seven punches on my brother and fifteen on my sister. They both had fifteenish on me. We only used about five punches between us though. I loved that game.

As for the punchbuggy game, if you didn't name the color, or say 'No punch back' everyone whos playing is allowed to punch you.

My daughter yells, "I saw a Herbie car!" And no, she hasn't seen the recent remake; just the original.

If you're in the car playing, isn't he already on his butt? That's how we sit in cars around here.

My girlfriend and I used to do "Punchybuggy <insert color>" on road trips, which then became any time we were in a car together.

A new bug was worth one punch/point, and an old bug was worth two punches/points. If you misidentified or reused a bug already seen, you got punched back and lost a point.

We then added the "PT poke" - where, upon seeing a PT Cruiser, we would poke each other, also for points.

My girlfriend had an uncanny knack for catching PTs and I always managed to spot the bugs. I think the last day before we gave up cold turkey I won 17-5 on bugs, and she won 18-8 on PTs.

We counted PT Cruisers as a punch. Depending on who you would play with, they were a few other things that counted for a punch. Any car with wood on it, for example.

While I have been known to play Slub-Bug in my past, we counted dead Beatles as well as moving ones. The result was that driving by known foriegn car repair shops always resulted in a flurry of fisticuffs.

And only the first one to spot the specific vehichle was allowed to score on it.

Eventually we added things to the game--including our only surving game--FUGLY.

Basically, when my Wife, my friends or I spot something soooooo ugly (We'll say Freakin Ugly for this family forum) that someone deserves to be hit for it, we then proceed to hit someone for it.

The victim looks over the offending item (shirt, paint job on a car, building, small bug-eyed dog, what ever is that ugly.) If they agree that it is that ugly, then nothing. If they disagree, they get to hit the person back.

We rarely disagree.
