So I was building and stocking a dungeon the other day, a winter outpost for giant raiders near civilized lands. The Giants decisively crushed a force of men at arms Knights and a Paladin Lord after baiting the army with goblin raiders. All that was part of the back-story as I started rolling up treasure and whatnot in the dungeon.

So completely at random, Using the DM guide charts, fair dice and recommended treasure levels I roll a Rod of Rulership, Holy Avenger, and Armor of Command for the giants treasure! Each Item is perfectly accounted for by the back-story and each is extremely hard to roll.

Once the giant lair was done I worried that they might be too valuable for the party but as there are no paladins in the party and the items are of a kind that will be spotted if they try to hang on to them, and since they make perfect sense, they are still there.

I have had this happen many times with random rolls, almost as if they are responding to story imperatives, chance as the tool of destiny.

I wonder if seren gas was made though serendipity.

maybe the inventor was about to say "Oh wow, serendipity!" but died before he finished so all he managed to gag out was "Oh wow, Seren!" then he died and the name stuck.

D&D can offer some incredible moments of divine intervention, that 20/20 when you are against the beastie that you should have avoided. For me though it is always when I combine charts with rolls, It is like, gee this would be a good spot to encounter a wyvern, Roll Roll Roll, hey you guys hear something overhead movin fast...

If I could bring that uncanny rolling abilities to Vegas I would be a barred millionaire.

Sounds like you'd be fun to play with, Bean Counter. I love serendipity, too.

I was a frustrating player because I rolled just as well for my PC's as I do for my monsters, The halfling I played through college once snuck out during a party nap break, passed all the traps and monsters and stole the prized artifact and was playing with it when the rest woke from their nap. (done solo while the game was on a break)

He then hid it in a bag of holding and let the party fight its way room by room to the empty treasury at the end and while they where screaming about the false trail he whiped out the prize and said oh I found this... Hee Hee
