Well, I will most likely be involved with a school fundraiser next year - a movie night.
What I'd like are some suggestions of good movies - preferably fairly recent, and on DVD or soon to be on DVD.
Guideline: maximum 14A rating please (high school audience, we would probably be pushing it with 14A). Also, something of a reasonable length; we'll probably be running the movie afterschool, so LotR-length movies and such are out - nobody will want to stay at school till 7 PM.
Also, we're not really quite sure what genres we'll play in the order of. Personally I think we should start with an action movie, then maybe a comedy, and one or two chick flicks. Opinions on this would be appreciated too, but I guess those are the main genres I'm looking for (action/adventure, comedy, romance/chick flick, maybe horror).

Most of the suggestions so far have been pretty good, but some of them are really questionable. So be sure and watch first, any movie you decide on and see for yourself if it is appropriate. For example “Love Actually” probably ought to have a NC17 rating. And the Saw movies and Hostel are just sick and, IMO, not appropriate for anyone.
But there are a lot of good movies available.

Really? How so?
Besides, the Canadian ratings seem to be significantly more liberal than our ratings system. Love Actually is rated R in the US but 14A in Canada.

Breakfast Club actually has quite a few uses of the F-word, dunno if that's acceptable or not. Sin City is WAY out.

Ok! Ok! I withdraw my statement that it ought to have an NC 17 rating, for crying out loud! I don’t give an aardvark liver about the stupid rating system. It’s kind of a useless system anyway. To quibble that it ought to rate this or that is missing the point.
So instead I’ll state it this way: “Love Actually” is largely smut. It is not an appropriate movie for children and young people.
I’m not even convinced it is appropriate for adults. But that’s something each adult has to decide for themselves. You could sit there and say that it’s a great movie if you want to. That’s your privilege. You could sit there and say you love that kind of entertainment. That is also your privilege. But don’t you dare try to sit there and try to say or even imply that that movie is appropriate for children. Be honest enough to call it what it is.
