That is, I figured out how to take a Mercator-projection bitmap, and project it onto a globe, undoing the area distortion. It looks pretty cool.

Globe!

I didn't realize the North Pole was so... circular.

That's area a mercator projection omits, dantesparadigm [Smile]

In terms of landmass, there's nothing there, so he could just put ocean.

You're so eurocentric, KoM [Wink]

I remember the first time I saw a map that wasn't centered just off the coast of N. America. It was high school, and my history teacher brought in a map produced in China, with Xi'an essentially at the center of the map. It was a paradigm shifting experience.

It reminds me of Saul Steinberg's "View of the World from 9th Avenue"

For those who play X-Com, UFO Defense, we're quite used to seeing the globe from all directions. *sniffs at the memories*

Where is the turtle that carries the world on its back KOM? I demand ACCURACY!

It's on the other side of the globe, you can't see it right now.

The Pixiest: I always do [Smile] .

*sigh* I don't know how, but I deleted that game and its sequel from my computer. I can't even find the disk I had it on. I wish I could somehow get it back [Frown] .

Of course, I had gotten so good (after playing it for 5 years) that I can beat it easily on Brilliant mode [Smile] .

Home of the Underdogs used to have it, but they're still down. [Frown]

It's not really Eurocentric; you can rotate the globe to view it from any direction. I just took the screenshot where I thought it would be most estetically pleasing.

KOM could arguably be Africentric. Or is it Africancentric? Or Africanocentric? Afrocentric? I DONT KNOW!

Why do so many of you still fall for that whole round Earth myth?

Mebbe cause we haven't found the edge yet? [Smile]

The best mind altering world map I've seen was one at an "Australian Themed" restaurant (can you say Outback).

It hung on the wall, with N on the bottom and S on the top, but was otherwise correct. This helped centrally locate Australia.

It took a few moments for my mind to grasp it.

"Otherwise correct"? In what way was it flawed?

North is Up, duh. That's why walking South feels like going downhill.

Heh. Actually, I saw quite a few globes like that while I was figuring out how to do this right. Not to mention the ones with east and west reversed.
