A Lion in Winter, starring Peter O'Toole, Kate Hepburn, Timothy Dalton and Anthony Hopkins with a great script.

Lawrence of Arabia

Citizen Kane: these last two speak for themselves

The Best of Youth: Italian epic which manages to be also very personal.

The Constant Gardener: very moving

Sophie Scholl— The Last Days: still in theatres

Ladies in Lavender: underated gem

Travelers and Magicians: a Buddhist masterpiece from a different world

A Little Romance: best romance film and best family film I have ever seen.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail: defines comic excellence

A Bridge Too Far: all-star cast (Michael Caine, Laurence Oliver, Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins et al) makes one of the finest war films ever.

Twealve Angry Men: an American classic

Motorcycle Diaries

Dead Poet's Society

Emperor's Club: these last three are great coming of age films.

I haven't seen all of these... but I do believe our tastes are diametrically opposed. =/

Even about Holy Grail. An amazing film, but I'm a Brianist.

Ten movies I think people should see

1) Ferris Buellers Day Off - in fact, I would go so far as to say it's near impossible to go through high school without seeing this movie.

2) Lean On Me

3) Super Size Me

4) Shawshank Redemption

5) The Stand

6) Bridge Over River Kwai

7) Sparticus

8) Jakob The Liar

9) V For Vendetta

10) A Night At the Opera by The Marx Brothers - has stood the test of time, remains funny to all who watch it, and is perfect for whatever age.

Off the top of my head...

The Princess Bride.
Gone with the Wind.
One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest.
It's a Wonderful Life.
Lord of the Rings.
The Heiress (with Olivia de Havilland).
North by Northwest.
Withnail and I.
Sense and Sensibility.
Labyrinth.
The Philadelphia Story.

Don't ask me why - I just think everyone should have seen them.

Oh, no! Really? I wouldn't have thought it...

Galaxy Quest
Serenity
It's a Wonderful Life
A Christmas Story
The Sound of Music
Wit
Life is Beautiful
Ladyhawke
Forrest Gump
My Big Fat Greek Wedding

I agree with the ones in the first post (that I've seen.) All good films. These 10 that I've listed are such that when a friend of mine hasn't seen one, my jaw drops and I drag them over to my house to watch it.

Lisa: You don't like Life of Brian? Or simply not as much as Holy Grail?

Holy Grail is a completely different type of Funny from Life of Brian. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE both movies, but something about Brian... the more you watch it the funnier it is. You catch the subtle things you missed before.

With Holy Grail pretty much the only thing you catch on repeated viewings is the children beating rugs with cats.

Then again, maybe I've watched HG too many times and the funny's gone out of it.

True Conversation-

Me: Ok, Jean's never seen Holy Grail before so NO QUOTING!
Daniel: Ok. Got it. No Quoting.
....
....
Daniel: Mind you, M00se bites can be pretty nasty!

We didn't even make it through the credits.

Rebel Without a Cause
Edward Scissorhands

I'm shocked these two were missed.

I must be really uneducated, as I've only seen a few of these.

I can't believe only one person so far has mentioned Serenity, though. By the way, thanks Hatrack for introducing me to Firefly. It's the only show I've ever watched that I really connected with. I'm still feel sad whenever I think that there won't be any more, though. [Frown]

Serenity was a good movie. I didn't include it in my list though because while it gave us closer on the Firefly 'verse, I don't think it was as good as most of the individual episodes in the series.

Joss is great in characterization. That's why we watch his stuff. He just doesn't have time to do that in a movie like he does in TV. And that's where Serenity suffered.

Please don't hurt me.

I agree, Pix. Firefly was fantastic, and I'll definitely see Serenity again, but not my favorite movie ever.

You know, you're right. I suppose my love for Firefly kinds bleeds over. [Big Grin]

I don't know what is so good about The Philadelphia Story, but it made my favorite list, also. I have the hots for Katharine Hepburn in a bad way, but of all of her movies, this is the one that sticks with me the most.

Here are some of my other favorites:
The Usual Suspects; Brother, Where Art Thou?; Spellbound; The Competition; City of God; For the Love of the Game

Honestly I've seen all three* of the Python movies often enough to have sucked The Funny out of them, but Life of Brian was always my favorite of them as well.

*I don't count the big screen versions of their TV sketch comedy as movies, really.

Unfortunately SHAWSHANK is ruined for me (too many viewings. Same for PRINCESS BRIDE. Perhaps after a 20 year break, I'll watch them again.

A few films that have been important to me:

Streetcar Named Desire (anything Tennessee Williams wrote, but that's the top)
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind
Garden State
Lord of the Rings
Butterfield 8 (camp value)
Miss Firecracker
The Piano
Closer
Sordid Lives
The Dark Crystal (which has a sequel coming next year)
Frida
Matrix
The Color Purple
Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?
Being John Malkovich
Home for the Holidays
House of Yes
Gone With the Wind

From reading OSC's columns, I've realized that, like almost all of his other tastes in life, our tastes in movies follows suit - diametrically opposed. That's a GOOD thing, right?

Actually Malakai- OSC had a great fondness for some of the movies you posted.

He has mentioned previously his great love of Eternal Sunshine and Being John Malkovitch and he's mentioned in the past the he also loves Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Posted by TheGrimace (Member # 9178) on :

mm, forgot: The Adventures of Baron von Munchausen

Shawshank,

Wow, OSC loves Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Wonders never cease! Thanks for clarifying.

You've got to be kidding me!

EDIT:

Not kidding about putting it on the list, I can respect that. I meant kidding about the sequel part.

I know... it's bound to be bad, but I'll still see it. [Roll Eyes]

I love the fact that the original had NO computer/cgi effects whatsoever. The new one will have plenty.
