So I got an information packet from my study abroad program. They are recommending I bring a laptop with me on my trip. Unfortunately, I don't own a laptop at this point (I have 3 desktops and no laptops, which is sort of absurd). So now I'm having to try and find a cheap but good laptop for my trip. I'd prefer Apple (since I love my iMac), but I know how much more expensive they are (even with a student discount). So can anyone make any recommendations on laptops?

Already have two threads on this subject, one of them very recent, one from a couple months ago. Take a peak around.

I found the one, although I'm not used to looking 6 pages back for stuff. I checked the first 2 pages and didn't see anything, so I made this post. *shrugs* Oh well.

Try the search feature? It's not foolproof, but sometimes a cursory glance can yield some results in a minute or two.

I would go with an iBook. It may be a little more expensive (they start at 1000$) but for what you're probably going to be doing they're perfect. They have great battery life and come preloaded with all the software and features you need.

Yeah, I like iBooks, but I'm just not positive I can afford one. I mean the cheapest one with discount is $950. I guess it all depends on my parents. If they are willing to contribute some, then maybe I can afford an iBook. If they aren't, it may be cheap PC laptop time for me.

If you have the time, go to slickdeals.net and check back there regularly. There are new laptop deals posted every few weeks(or faster).

I got one about a month back. 14in screen, 1.5GHz processor, 1GB ram, 40GB hard drive, dvd burner, $500 including tax and shipping.

You also might look used. That spiffy new mac they just came out with is making a lot of the diehard mac people I know sell thier power and ibooks and change over.
