I just googled amyloidosis. From what I read, protein fibers are deposited in various organs, which decreases their function.
I hope the doctors can help him.

Yikes, that sounds terrible.
And, um, I really do hope he can finish that series (I hope I don't sound too selfish by saying that), of course his health is a bigger priority though.
