I just got a new vido card for an older computer. The computer has an on board video card.
I have installed the new card, installed the drivers, and the device manager recognizes the new card--as well as the old card.
When I reboot, the monitor only comes on if it is plugged in to the onboard card. I have gone to display properties and told it to use my new card. I hit apply, but when I go back to the display properties, it is reset to my onboard card.
How can I get my computer to use my new card? what am I missing? grrarrgh.
Thanks.

You probably have to disable the onboard video in the BIOS.

You were right. It was a cmos setting. I feel st00p3d.

I agree with TheTick. Generally there's a key that needs to be held down during the black screen before the Windows screen appears- usually something like F10 or Delete- to enter BIOS. Then look through the layers of options until you find Video. Change one thing at a time, so you don't inadvertently goof.
In a worst case scenario, however, there may be a jumper setting on the motherboard or some such to be changed. If you don't have your original motherboard documentation, it might be possible to find a copy online through Google or the like.
