Some of the older Hatrackers may know what I am talking about here.

How many degrees of seperation are there between you and OSC?

(warning: If you don't get it I won't explain it to you) [Evil]

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I don't know exactly what you are referring to, but...

OSC used to live in a house that's down the street from me.

Posted by Dan_raven (Member # 3383) on :

I spend some time on a web-site that he has been known to visit.

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

One, I guess.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Your already starting to get it guys. [Big Grin]

Keep going [Smile]

Posted by Dr Strangelove (Member # 8331) on :

Ummm ... one, if you're talking about the whole "6 Degrees of Seperation" theory. If I remember correctly, that's the whole 'knowing someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows Brad Pitt' thing. If that's the case, on here I've had OSC respond to me, so while that may not technically count as 'knowing' him, he has acknowledged my existence. Don't quite know what you're aiming for though.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

OSC sent me a package once.

Well, it was his wife. But still.

Posted by genius00345 (Member # 8206) on :

I actually met him and took a picture with him.

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

I am aiming for having some fun Strangelove. So have some fun and enjoy the show. [Big Grin]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

One, I guess.

And today I met someone (not a Hatracker) who was also one degree away.

[Dont Know] So?

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

I've talked to his wife via e-mail. And he has responded to a number of my posts. What of it?

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

It's kevin bacon not brad pitt.

Posted by Bob_Scopatz (Member # 1227) on :

Well...let's see. I met him and have a picture with him.

My wife's mother knows his college room-mate personally.

The Cards sent us something once. [Wink]

I have an e-mail in which someone closely related to Mr. Card admitted that every. single. one. of his characters is based on me. (Drat! it's around here somewhere...)

You know...I think I might actually be Orson Scott Card.

Notice you never see us in the same place at the same time (except for that one picture thing, which may have been photoshopped for all I know).

[Big Grin]

Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon is a lot more fun.

I've met OSC, so 1.

I'm also 2 degrees from Kevin Bacon, as my brother's met him. [Big Grin]

Posted by Reticulum (Member # 8776) on :

I've had a post chat with OSC, so I guess 1?

Posted by Amilia (Member # 8912) on :

One of my aunts was in the theater department with him at BYU.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I've met both OSC and Kevin Bacon.

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

So then OSC would be one degree of separation from Kevin Bacon?

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Yep..

Zero...I met him in Boston. [Big Grin]

No, that's two. Unless Tom met 'em both at the same time.

Or OSC has met Bacon, which is also possible.

Posted by FlyingCow (Member # 2150) on :

I played trivial pursuit against him and got to meet his awesome wife and two daughters. (Never did get to meet Geoff, though)

So, I guess that counts as one?

There are so many people on the site who have met him at book signings or his writer's workshop that you're going to get a lot of folks who are one degree, I'd imagine.

I don't know how many degrees, but I do know that I am at least 2k miles away from the Carolinas.

Just shy of 72 And 1/2 degrees (assuming the stars keep their rightful alignment and don't fall out the sky) [Smile]

Probably around 45degrees...
...Fahrenheit / 25degrees Celcius
It's chilly over there in Greensboro.

Posted by Telperion the Silver (Member # 6074) on :

I've talked to him on email...and I've met a few people who have met him... so I guess one or two degrees. [Smile]

Perhaps my understanding is faulty. I thought that if you had actually met, face-to-face, there is NO separation, so that would be zero degrees. If you met someone who has met the person, then you are separated by that one link, so one degree of separation, if you met someone who knows someone who has met your person, then there are two links between you, thus, two degrees of separation.

Or do I have that zeroth degree thing all wrong?

180, at least insofar as our opinions of the current administration are concerned (well, actually, probably more like 130).

Here's an explanation of the whole Six Degrees of Separation concept. I don't think I ever knew the details of this experiment:

quote:
In 1967, American sociologist Stanley Milgram devised a new way to test the theory, which he called "the small-world problem." He randomly selected people in the mid-West to send packages to a stranger located in Massachusetts. The senders knew the recipient's name, occupation, and general location. They were instructed to send the package to a person they knew on a first-name basis who they thought was most likely, out of all their friends, to know the target personally. That person would do the same, and so on, until the package was personally delivered to its target recipient.

Although the participants expected the chain to include at least a hundred intermediaries, it only took (on average) between five and seven intermediaries to get each package delivered.

As for me, I have a friend who knows OSC. So I still don't know if that makes me one or two degrees of separation from him!

I did the same as Cow. And I know Cow.

OSC stood up and shook my hand once at a book signing in Santa Cruz. So I'm going to say zero.

Posted by Scott R (Member # 567) on :

51.

Darn restraining order...

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Just a clarification:

If you have met OSC, you are separated by one degree. If you are OSC, you are separated by zero.

Please continue.

Most enlightening, KarlEd, thank you!

I'm one degree away from OSC.

I have a BS, and according to his bio he has a BA and an MA.

I don't know; I'd have to know more about who has met whom to know.

Posted by seespot (Member # 7388) on :

OSC came to my house once about 14 years ago.

So one.

My mom asked him which of his books was his favorite.

He asked her which of her children was her favorite.

She said my older brother.

She then said she was kidding.

I'm scarred for life. . .

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

kq, it must be two -- unless you've met him -- neh?

Kevin Bacon is hot.

I'm two degrees from Cameron Diaz and one degree from Jared Leto.

And also, I get Kevin Bacon and Kevin Spacey mixed up.

Really?

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I'm two degrees away from Kevin Bacon -- one of my missionary companions was an extra in Footloose (he was from Lehi, Utah, where it was filmed).

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

I'm not sure if anyone I've met has met him. If so, two; if not, three, because I know for certain that at least one person I've met has met more than one person who has met him.

Posted by Kama (Member # 3022) on :

pH it's easy. Kevin Bacon is hot, Kevin Spacey isn't.

Posted by MandyM (Member # 8375) on :

yeah but Kevin Spacey is the better actor. Kevin Bacon is too cheesey.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I'm one degree away from OSC, since I've met him, but the more circomlocutious degrees are more fun.

I would guess that if everybody's only separated by 6 degrees, then most Mormons are separated by a lot fewer than that. So I would guess I'm fewer than 6 separations. But I couldn't prove it; I don't know who he knows. [Smile]

Oh, and I attended a panel discussion where he was a guest panelist, and I met him at the book signing - but that just means I know him, he doesn't know me.

The only reason I keep opening this thread is 'cause I'm waiting for one fo the Cards to post. . .

Posted by Advent 115 (Member # 8914) on :

Ohhhh, please don't hope for that. I'm not so sure how they would respond to this.

One, I've met him. And I was present when Bob Scopatz met him so I can swear they're two different people. Although, come to think of it, Mrs. Card kept distracting me whenever they would talk together. Hmm...

Me=Santaquin, UT
OSC=Greensboro, NC

The latitude of Santaquin is 39.975N. The longitude is -111.784W.

The latitude of Greensboro is 36.072N. The longitude is -79.792W.

So I'm 3.903 degrees latitude and 31.992 degrees longitude from him. Give or take...

I have three (college) degrees. How many does our dear host have? Unless he has more than nine, I'm within six.

[Dont Know]

Posted by human_2.0 (Member # 6006) on :

What if you've met him, but he doesn't remember it? I've met and talked to OSC many times. Not sure if he remembers me yet.

Who's Kevin Bacon? [Wink]

I know many people who know Steve Jobs. So 2 degrees for Steve. And I'm sure Steve and Bill Gates are buddy pals, so 3 degrees from Gates (maybe even 2 since a lot of the people I know might know Bill too). Steve Jobs also knows Bono and Al Gore, so 3 for them. Al Gore (& Gates) no doubt knows George Bush. So 4 for the prez... [Big Grin]

I've got two for an amazing number of famous people -- between Herman B Wells and various people now in the ballet world in Washington DC and New York (many famous people go to ballets and like to meet the performers after).

Also, I had a relative work with Mother Teresa, significantly increasing my reach.

Some of my Alberta cousins are named Card. Some of OSC's Alberta cousins are named Card. The members of both groups are likely cousins. How many degrees for a shirt-tail in-law?

Posted by Artemisia Tridentata (Member # 8746) on :

Oh! also I played "Green, Green, Grass of Home" in the theater lobby for the world premere of "True Grit" and JOHN WAYNE shook my hand and said "Great Job". Who is that Kevan Bacon guy anyway?

Posted by imogen (Member # 5485) on :

I've personally met Cherie Blair and John Howard.

Oh, and the then head of the military of Pakistan, who then became the leader of Pakistan after a military coup.

So between the three of those, I figure I'd have world leaders/statespeople pretty well covered.

Not so good on the entertainment figures. [Smile]

I've met Bob Scopatz, who has met OSC, so two.

I've also met Charles Grassley, a senator from Iowa, who has certainly met all the presidents since 1974, when he joined the U.S. House of Representatives (incidently - the year I met him). He was elected senator in 1980. So, two degrees from many presidents.

Even better (than presidents) - I've shaken the hand of Spencer W. Kimball and talked to Clara McMaster - so one degree from them and two from any general authority they know. (Obviously, this was quite a long time ago - even longer time period than when I met Charles Grassley.)

I've met Card, and my uncle did the artwork for his new fiction magazine website, so that's a degree.

It's funny how a single person can connect with plenty of high-profile people. I knew Aaron Eckhart about ten years ago, an actor who's acted with Julia Roberts, Sean Penn, and a slew of others (he's currently starring in that film "Thank You for Smoking"). He's changed a lot since he "went Hollywood," as can be expected.

It was weird to hear Julia Roberts mention him in her acceptance speech when she won the Oscar for Erin Brockvich. I was like, "Hey, I know that guy!!"

I got stepped on by Wilt Chamberlain. Talked to Willy Nelson in a Delta Crown Room. Sat a table near Buddy Ebsen while he ate a meatball sandwich. And got to meet June Lockhart at a traffic safety meeting.

All of which proves that Wilt Chamberlain and June Lockhart probably had sex in an airplane at some point.
