The article that was the headline on the BBC website today was about global warming.

quote:
The report, published by the UK government, says there is only a small chance of greenhouse gas emissions being kept below "dangerous" levels.
However, this one article also has links to the BBC's entire climate change section on the website, with other articles, and diagrams and things. Here is the "In Depth" section which groups all these articles together providing what I think is a pretty comprehensive view of the situation.

There is also a quiz and things. All in all, very interesting, useful and informative. I thought El Worldwide Jatraqueros might be very interested.

1,000 years being given as the time frame for the climate to change? Well, that means everyone is certain to procrastinate. [Razz]

EDIT:

quote:
"We're not talking about it happening over five minutes, of course, maybe over a thousand years, but it's the irreversibility that I think brings it home to people."
You mean this. I think what they are saying that in 1,000 years it could be irrevesible, or close to irreversible.

Not quite. The 1,000 years is the estimate they give on how long it'll take the sea level to rise. The article indicates they -already- thing it's irreversible.

So we have 1,000 years to move inland?

Posted by Teshi (Member # 5024) on :

Oh, that's what I originally had:

quote:
The 1,000 years is the estimate they give on how long it'll take the sea level to rise.
You missed the important bit!

quote:
It fears the Greenland ice sheet is likely to melt, leading sea levels to rise by seven metres over 1,000 years.
Seven metres is a lot. Even assuming it's a curve, thirty centimentres is only a few generations away.

Tres: Well, seven metres inland.

Did I say it wasn't a lot? [Confused]

I thought you had missed how much it was. It seemed to me that you implied that there would be no change for 1000 years, and then climate change would occur.

I'm sorry I misinterpreted!

I'm sorry, I thought this was going to be a joke thread. The world is in heat, and ready to reproduce ... yeah.

Speaking of heat, it was friggin 45 degrees outside yesterday. Talk about wild. That's a heat wave for this time of year. Where's all my beautiful snow?

I see someone took my joke and made a dobie. How sad. [Razz]

I didn't even see your joke, I just couldn't resist.

It is sad though.

No kidding! It was 60°s outside today. There were people in flip flops. I don't understand this weather.

Where are you at? I had snow today.

I'm just outside Detroit, Evie is in Washington DC (right?).

All we've gotten is rain lately.

All I know is, we've had an incredible amount of daisies in our backyard for about a month now. And quite a few desert lilac.

I can just feel the grass getting geared up. Now where did I put that mower?

Yep, I'm in DC. [Smile]

Evie3217,
I'm right with you in Northern Va! I couldn't believe how weird it was today! Woke up to thick creepy fog and by noon I thought we we're in the middle of spring! It's been so nice the past few weekends we even took my little girl to see the new panda at the zoo! I've never been to a zoo in January!

Posted by Tarrsk (Member # 332) on :

Yeah, it was crazy today. I saw people walking around in T-shirts when they should've been bundled up in coats. It's still freakin' January!

Evie: Hey, I'll be working in DC starting in June. Any tips?

I'm personally looking forward to having beachfront property again, like we did in the Cretaceous. Postdiluvean beach party at my house! [Party]

When our basement flooded once, long ago, Mom was all "But Yaweh promised not to do this again!" [Big Grin]
