I LOVE GIRAFFES. Not as much as some people though. At the San Diego Wild Animal Park, I got trapped on the train ride from hell with a woman who clearly was romantically involved with the parks tallest giraffe, Ivan. She talked about him for close to 20 minutes, far more than any one animal at such a large park deserves. I could also tell you much about Ivan, but perhaps you can just read this book instead!

So, um, when I'm teaching my daughter animal sounds, I have a question.

What does the giraffe say? I can do elephant, cat, cow, all those. But giraffe, that's hard. So is turtle, for that matter. Oh, and flamingo-- I think they kinda squawk, but I'm not sure.

Oh, well, we do go to the zoo sometimes. And then there are representations of them-- stuffed animals, pictures in books, my husband's animal videos that she's allowed to watch sometimes...

Giraffes are generally fairly silent. Then can make some noises -- coughing, snorting, a moo a bit like a cow, a bleat rather like a goat -- but not often. (Zebras and rabbits are also not big talkers.)

My rabbits "talk" to each other. It sounds like growling, but they only do it when they're happy. Also, the bucks make a "squeeeee" sound and fall over right after performing their buckly duties. [Big Grin]

So far, when Emma asks what a giraffe says, I tell her what my friend told her daughter-- I make a munching sound, like chewing leaves. *giggles* She hasn't copied me yet, although she laughs. I'm not sure if she believes me or not.

Giraffes, also have boingy things on their heads. Probably their best feature. Just in case you didn't know...

"Boingy things" is the scientific term, by the way.

I may need to buy this for a friend of mine. She loves giraffes so much that she and her boyfriend claim that a little stuffed giraffe is their son. Her mom, the giraffe's grandma, even knits scarves for Boogie. I've heard her say that sometimes she thinks she and her boyfriend only stay together for the giraffe's sake.

Never mind. I definitely don't want to buy her this book--the last thing the girl needs is encouragement.

ohmigoodness Noemon, I was hoping this would be a link to that book!

I was a councilor at a summer camp this summer, and one of my friends, another councilor, had found this book at some random little book store, thought it was funny and brought it to camp. The kids made us read it every day! SO funny!

I've fed a giraffe before,and their prehensile tongues are amazing. I think in giraffe world, the bigger you are the more you eat, because the biggest one kept shoving the others out of the way so we would have no choice but to feed him.
