Tch. I suggest a visit to the red-light district.

Do you have any idea why things are so bad? I know I would be able to help (or at least talk) if I knew exactly what was wrong with life and school.

[Frown]

See, I knew I should have sent you an inspirational pornographic plaque for Christmas. Then you could look at it at times like this for comfort.

/flippancy.

I'm sorry, Son of Shvester. If it helps, I'm kinda mad at my life too. At least the job aspect. And I know the only way to make it better is to "cheer up" but I just can't figure out how to.

I don't ever think that life sucks. Certainly things we have to deal with in life sucks. I can confidently state that cancer sucks. So does losing people you love. Especially attending the funeral of someone you love, who died of cancer, while you are dealing with it yourself.

So does getting a note from your university telling you that you're now on academic probation because they converted all your incompletes last term to F's. [Roll Eyes] Never mind that you had incompletes because you had cancer and were hospitalized for much of the remainder of the term. (yes, that's getting worked out, they just haven't processed all my paperwork for the emergency medical withdrawal yet, it still sucked to open that in the mail. Makes your day.)

But life is still better than the alternative. Hang in there, SoS.

What happens when your mom sees this?

Wait, I thought the alternative was going to be great. If this is better than the alternative, I'm in big trouble.

Hope things get better SoS. Remember, half the problems are just in your head. Literally. Teenage brains suck. Your hormones are so out of whack, it's a wonder anyone survives being a teenager. Remembering that it would pass was half of what got me through. "This too shall pass." It can be like a little mantra in your head, when things are really bad. [Frown]

Or when you're constipated. Cheer up, it could be worse. [Smile]

It could be raining. [Wink]

The alternative is going to be great and I'm looking forward to seeing a bunch of people I miss terribly. However, if you asked did I want to go be with them today or spend another 40 years here with my husband and kids I'm gonna go with staying with them. And I don't think that's a bad thing - I think God wants us to enjoy the life he's blessed us with and to appreciate it.

Find your Tante Shvester!!! She always cheers ME up!

Just as half of the bad things are in your head, true happiness is too! King of Men is ALWAYS constipated, and he seems quite cheery. How do you think he maintains such a hard life and still has time to cheer other people up? Attitude is everything [Wink]

For a more serious attempt at consolation, though, you might try this essay or this one.. In particular, his theory of school as a 'day job' is something I wish I had known when I was in school. (Well, technically grad school is still school, but you get a better class of classmates.)

Harping uncontrollably sucks, but, you could always start a heavy metal band and write really dark lyrics and songs with dark, scary sounding chords so parents will be all like, "no, you cann't listen to their music! It's EVIL!" Which would be so fun.

Life does suck, but it also is wonderful. That's the thing, it's both. Being a teenager blows monkeys...and high school is even worse. But you will never have this little responsibility in your life again, never be this young, never have this many choices and options.

When you get a car it gets better. When you graduate it gets better. Then it gets worse again. Then better again, then worse again, etc etc. Life is roller coaster, up, down, up, down, get used to it.

The trick to it is this: "What can I do to improve me life?" Say it over and over and over again. Then, figure out what you -can- do to improve your life, then do it!

Also, drugs help.

KoM, thanks for linking those articles. I found them fascinating and thought-provoking.

Stone_Wolf_, I'm trying to decide if that's intended to be humorous, or if you're seriously advocating to a teenager on a discussion forum that he take drugs.

Sounds humorus.

I really liked that first article KoM

In response to the first essay KoM linked to- I don't understand the concept of nerds being unpopular. I'm first in my class, and everyone has always known I'm smart, but I've never once been bullied or teased about it. Maybe it's because I'm really a theatre person, and I basically do whatever I want regardless of how it might affect popularity. I suppose I've just realized earlier than most that I really don't care about that sort of thing.

Perhaps Stone_Wolf_ was advocating seeing a physician or psychiatrist who might recommend medication. Seems likelier to me that he was joking.

[Deeper Janitorial Voice] I'm certain he wasn't advocating any illegal activity, for that would clearly violate the terms of service, which I'm sure was not his intention. [/Deeper Janitorial Voice]

You mean medication, right?

Edit: I didn't refresh before I posted that. Looks like it's been covered. [Smile]

Kidding, mostly kidding.

Those who have chronic depression can get some help through doctor prescribed medication.

For those that remember, I do generally have a pro-marijuana stance. Alternately smoking has caused me harm. I lost my nifty good job because I failed the entrance urinalysis exam (for marijuana) and have refrained from partaking for over the last two months. I will soon try to get that job back.

I still think that it should be legalized, but while it is still an illegal controlled substance I would never advocate its use to a minor on a public forum.

Holy Carp, Papa Moose! Your janitorial voice is scary! Like a cross between Barry White and Shaft. But scary, not sexy. Though, I'm sure Mama Squirrel would disagree... oh god, I'll stop now.

Go to bestbuy or wherever and buy the CD "Darryl Worley" by him. Listen to the song "Awful Beautiful Life." It is my favorite song and has become one of my founding doctrines for life. That life has both awful and good times but without the awful times the good times would be nothing. It would be like christmas everyday. Christmas would become meaningless because it would be a constant. So cheer up. Everytime i have been down, and I have been down to the bottom, i just pray like crazy and remember tommorow is another day.

I agree, Icarus -- those are two very powerful and brilliant essays. Thanks, King of Men.

Edited to add: Taste for Makers is awesome, too.

The son and I are continuing our discussion face to face, but I want you all to know that I appreciate the support that you are offering.

Especially you, KoM, for those great essays.
