Unless, of course, you hide it in the middle of stuff in your purse and forget it's there. Then it'll probably get through-- I've accidentally brought a knife, nail clppers, or pepper spray onboard so many times I've lost count.

bottom line is, it's safer to run it through your check-in luggage. Kelly got in trouble one time for a pair of craft scissors - no point, weren't sharp, but still considered a "weapon". The guy let her through, but it was still troublesome.

I would print out some official document (see Megan's post) saying that you could though, just in case someone tries to call you on it.

Wow, whenever anyone in my family (usually the younger members) has forgotten something it's automatically been confiscated. I've had spoons confiscated...
That was in Canada and England. It sounds oddly lax down there!

The guy I share a cube with had his fingernail clippers taken away from him the last time he flew. No real story there--the absurdity of that particular banned item is legendary, and I seem to remember hearing that they'd finally reversed the ban on them.
The noteworthy part is that once he'd passed into the secure area he went into one of those shops that sells snacks and magazines and discovered a rack of fingernail clippers there for the purchasing.
