Yeah. I think that the cut-off here in Oregon for semi-finalist has been in the 214-217 range in the past several years. That is also approximately where the 99th percentile mark lies.

In Maine the cutoff was 214 and I got a 213.

Imogen: Well, after looking at what I missed, I'm scratching my head about one of the two questions I missed (both were in the writing section). On one of the questions, I can see why my reasoning would have potentially led me to the wrong answer, but on the other question, I really should have gotten it right. If I had, I very well could have scored a 240. Oh well.

The reason that you seem older is the "Mr." part. It makes you seem so mature.

I think I got 210 when I took it as a sophomore, but I forgot about it my Jr. year, which was the only time we could be considered for NMS. oh well. [Smile]

I took it this year (10th grade) and I got a 186. I felt so proud. It must be something about my school, a small private Jewish school, because I was in the top 5-10ish in my grade. What was the breakdown of all your scores? I got a 66 in RC, 54 in math, and 66 in writing.

When I took the psat it followed the Sat grading format, so I got a 1280. What is this 238?

I think this refers to your GRADE INDEX?

In which case that's an extremely high score, Mr. Funny, welcome to any college you desire in the Country, your probably a national merit scholar finalist! Way to go!

Ok I need to explain that, I think the grade index varies from year to year. My year, I got a 202, and that got me a nms honorable mention. I think the index says how many answers you got correct from any difficulty level, and out of 240

Haha. Once when I was in middle school I got all As for the first time ever, and one of them was an A-. My dad smiled at me and looked at the sheet and said, "what went wrong here?"

Quid, the PSAT is sort of a practice for the SAT. Dunno what you had in Canada. The SAT is a standardized test for getting into college.

The PSAT is a little different from the SAT. It has 3 sections, while the SAT used to have just two, verbal and math, although now there's a third essay section. The PSAT's extra section is writing. You don't have to write anything; it's mostly a test of your grammar and spelling knowledge.

238 is an absolutely phenomenal score. He beat me, unfortunately. Mr. Funny looked quite smug when he came home with his results. But we'll see if he can top my SAT score when he takes that.

My parents do that sort of thing, too. "You only got 125% on your test? Why didn't you get all 140 points available??"

Hrm. I didn't realize Puppy was the same age as me. I don't remember what I got on the PSAT, though I still remember my SAT score.

And my parents did the "what happened to the other two points?" thing, too, but they were joking.

I got a 216 I think, but back then there were only two sections, verbal and math scored 20-80, and verbal counted double.

I had the same rules as Dagonee when I took the PSAT in 1988. I think I got a 188, which put me in the 98th percentile and made me an NMS quarterfinalist. Oh, and I tied for 4th place in my class of about 25 students.

(I moved up to 2nd place on the SAT itself, with a score of 1390: 700 verbal, 690 math. [I studied. The guy who came in third, with 1370, didn't bother.] This was in 1989, or maybe early 1990, before they recalibrated the scale and then changed the whole system a couple of times.)

Thanks for saying that, Puppy, I thought I was losing it because I remembered scoring somewhere over a thousand on the PSAT too. I don't remember what, but it was nowhere near "almost perfect". Good Job, Mr. Funny!

I got a 1290 on the SAT and always wanted to go back and get those ten more points, but I figured I didn't really need them to get into college and it was a lot of time and money to take it again for only 10 points. But most of my friends got over 1300 so it rankled. (Maybe if I hadn't fallen asleep....) [Blushing]

I took the ACT, and scored in the 90's in everything but math (4 sections). I even got a 98% (out of 99% possible) on one of them.

I got a 48% in math though, lowering my overall score to an 89%. [Frown]

Congrats Mr. Funny! That's amazing.

It's amazing how much the PSATs and SATs have changes since I've been there (2 years ago). I got a 1450, and was very proud of myself.
