That guy, dead at 57

That creepy guy died last weekend. You know, the guy with the face like a depressed basset hound who starred in one of your favorite movies or TV shows of all time?

I really don't need to get much more specific than that because Vincent Schiavelli, who died of lung cancer, showed up in pretty much everything -- although "starred" would be the wrong word. Except for one cooking show, Schiavelli never headlined anything you were likely to see.

Instead he excelled as the oddball, the maniac, the mental patient, the foreign spy. Whenever there was a bit part that required a baleful, hangdog expression and a look that made you nervously check the exits, Schiavelli was there.

I was pretty sure I knew exactly who you were talking about after the second sentence. Just needed to check the photo to be certain.

And I did know that his name was Vincent Something (I watch movie credits with great fascination) . . . but I had never looked him up on IMDB either. That's quite the impressive list!

And it looks like he was in a MacGyver that's a couple discs ahead of where I'm up to. I'll remember to keep my eyes peeled for him.

Go in peace, Vincent.

Awesome (not awesome that he died, but I love the column). I loved every single part that he played, I wish he could have done more [Frown]

I assume he can now be found riding a subway train in New York.

I loved that guy. I can't believe he's gone. It was always my ambition to grow up to be trained as his successor.

There's actually a site that tracks HITGs like Schiavelli.

Here's his entry, btw.

To me, he'll always be the weapon salescomputer from the first season of ST:TNG.

I love That Guy actors. One of my favorites is That Guy Who Freaks Out from Seven, Alien Resurrection, and other things.

The (formerly Boston) Sports Guy, from ESPN.com's Page 2 section, has a long history of documented "That Guy"'s. In fact, it's part of his system for determining how good a sports movie is.

Well, I think that before Firefly came around, he pretty much was one.

But as soon as he showed up in anything I felt oddly reassured. I knew that in his creepy, mournful, psychotic way he was about to take the screen completely away from the stars and hold on to it until he was ready to give it back. It was comforting. No matter his part, Schiavelli was worth watching.
That is exactly how I felt about him.
