Awww.... I just read OSC's review of Aeon Flux. Seems he's played the new video game based on the movie, but has never watched the original MTV Aeon Flux anime!

I actually think I would've enjoyed the Aeon Flux movie way, way more if I had never seen the original show. As it is, I *hated* the movie *because* it was NOTHING like the show, at all.

The Equilibrium comparison is better, but it was nowhere near as good as Equilibrium (which should say something, since Equilibrium was only good for the killer gun katas).
It was basically one of the worst movie adaptations to date.
And since the show predates both the Matrix and Equilibrium, the comparison should be the other way around ^_^.

If the show had a single "point", I would probably describe it as "violence ultimately consumes all its adherents and accomplishes nothing."

I liked Aeon Flux the movie. I thought it was very stylish and well acted. I didn't have any problem with the plot, really. Much less so, anyway than most of the junk that passes for story these days.

According to AICN, the only people who would dislike Aeon Flux are people who don't like REAL science fiction.
Because this is what REAL science fiction is.
As opposed to fake science fiction.

Well, I think that's a bit overstated. I think there were some serious flaws in the science, so it's really not what I'd be talking about if I were trying to make a distinction between "real" science fiction and the other kinds.
In fact the story fit better in the Utopian Society genre than in any kind of "real" science fiction (however they were using the word). It was mostly about power and how it can become a self-perpetuating end unto itself even if it was originally siezed for noble ends.

I used to watch the original show, and I saw the movie. The movie was alright. Something to catch as a matinee or a second-run $1 theater. An enjoyable afternoon entertainment, but not one I'll be buying on DVD.

Oh, the original Aeon Flux anime was WAY better, don't get me wrong, but the live action one was fun too. They gave all these little tributes to events that happened in the anime, the secret room under Trevor's bed, hands for feet, the harness you wear to ender this other dimension, the Relica (in TOS also reminded people of the past, but that Bregna and Monica were once one nation), the Wall and defenses, cloning, germs, odd technology. They seemed to have blended that strange resistance movement from episode "The Purge" and the nation of Monica. Odd... but it worked. They still had the Wall separating areas of the City at least.
I didn't like the younger brother of Trevor thing... I think they did that to show much more clearly the love/hate relationship that Aeon and Trevor have. One minute they are blood enemies and the next they are lovers. So instead of puting some REALLY cool situation where Trevor might have betrayed Aeon or something they just had his doppelganger do it instead.
But it still worked out ok. Peter Chung himself helped consult the movie makers...and I can see his touch here and there.
I see this movie as, with the rest of Aeon, just one more episode in a possible reality. Although you can tell the movie tried to tie together and to explain all the odd things that were TOS... like Aeon dying in every other episode to simply reappear in the next.
This was of course done originally to mess with conventions and poke fun at mainstream thinking of the audience and entertainment industry.
