What is "it," you ask?

It's the sadly increasing tendency on this board to rely on name-calling, misstatement of others' positions, and mass assigning of beliefs to members of other groups when those groups don't claim those beliefs for themselves.

It's just unnecessary.

Tch. I haven't been following the board that closely lately; any particular thread that pisses you off, or are you just annoyed in general?

Posted by smitty (Member # 8855) on :

Well, pretty well every thread that touches on politics or religion

Poop head!

Posted by LadyDove (Member # 3000) on :

Breyerchic, poopy head is my favorite disparaging name. [Smile]

I've not been overtly aware of this problem lately and was going to make a mildly funny comment parodying smitty's post, but decided against it in respect for Dag. And because I don't know smitty well enough to make it really funny.

I have been reluctant to post in the political or religious threads out of a belief that I will not be respected. I disagreed with someone the other day and got called irrational for it. That was annoying.

Hear hear Dag and Kat.
Let us remember our manners and rules of debate.
(I worry if I've been guilty of "it" these past few months...been kinda edgy and not willing to debate much)

You can respect someone and still think they're being irrational on a certain issue.

Different people have different strengths. If someone wants to tell me about something they're very knowledgeable about, I won't generally contradict them. It's their specialty, presumably they know more about it than me, and I respect that.

But if, in their telling, they happen to mention that gravity is a myth I'm probably gonna question them.

Sometimes in the questioning I'm not as diplomatic as I could be, and if I offend anyone, I don't mean to. Just as I try not to take offense when people say things that just drive me crazy.

LadyDove -
You'll never insult me. I don't completely believe half of what I write, and I'm not being serious on the other half.
It just seemed to me, as a newbie, that there's a lot of friction between the theists and the atheists. It may always be this way.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I think respecting one another is something that takes effort. Name-calling proves that one doesn't.

Posted by smitty (Member # 8855) on :

Oh, and Breyer, were you calling ME an poopy head? [Taunt] why do people keep doing that to me?????

Posted by Dan_raven (Member # 3383) on :

Dag, I'll gladdly cut "it" out. I mean I never result to such crude and useless tacticts.

however, if I did, which I don't, I'd say that you and your entire PC-Facist, Nazi-Loving, Play Nice "coddling those that dare to disagree with rightious brillance" group are what is wrong not with this divine country, but the evil terrorist filled world and that if you don't quit making bizarre and ad-hoc demands on the truly intelligent people of this world, which would just be the people that always agree with me, then up yours, the horse you road in on, and the one your favorite uncle uses for strange Satanic rituals.

but I don't believe in saying such things.

So I won't.

It's a good thing you don't, it's horribly misspelled. [Razz]

Me neither. [Razz]

Actually, though I haven't really interacted with you, I've really enjoyed your posts. I'm glad you're here.

::applauds Dan-raven::
Now THAT'S what I'um talking 'bout!

[Smile] danke Lady!

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

I'd prefer not to point out examples. I know I'm not the only one who's noticed the changed tone lately.

I'm just hoping to maybe inspire everyone to take a second look before hitting Add Reply and see how you would feel if the post were aimed at you (substituting group membership or attribute as appropriate to get the real effect).

Oh, and Dan, that's exactly what I'd expect from YOUR kind.

Generous use of the "Preview Post" button combined with refreshing the thread you're replying to while typing long posts helps considerably in this regard. [Smile]

and never forget the very very very important spell check button.

Not like I'd ever forget to use that.

Posted by JennaDean (Member # 8816) on :

wate ... their's a spellcheck button?

Posted by Joldo (Member # 6991) on :

Maybe we should just institute dueling. Everyone's more polite and no one gets hurt.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

*slaps Joldo across the cheek with a white silk glove*

[Big Grin]

Wouldn't people get hurt in a duel? Shot, or stabbed, depending on the weapons?

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Depends how good the duelers are.

Posted by erosomniac (Member # 6834) on :

I challenge all of you - every last one of you - to a duel.

With wet noodles.

And/or those hideous troll dolls that everyone wanted in the early 90s.

But, Dag, it's such a lovely, luxurious feelinig to watch you take on (insert wrong headed one). You do it so well that I don't have to make the effort. Can't you continue just so I can watch? Please?

There's something about the structure of Internet discussion boards such that the most obnoxious ones set the tone. The rest of us can try to pull it back, but there's always someone who will be set off, and we end up with a flame war.

In meatspace, people change the subject to something innocuous, or leave en masse.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

sorry, I'll be nice now

Posted by smitty (Member # 8855) on :

meatspace..... priceless

Posted by King of Men (Member # 6684) on :

Hmmf, and I haven't even been on much for the past week. I'm hurt; have you people been having flamewars without me? [Cry]

Wait - you mean you can be working on a reply in the reply box and refresh without a) losing your post or b) posting your post before you're done?

Posted by King of Men (Member # 6684) on :

Ctrl-A. Ctrl-C. Refresh. Ctrl-V.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Yep. Works well. [Smile]

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Or just have the thread open in two tabs or windows, and refresh one while you're writing in the other. I only do that when I'm writing really long posts, but it works nicely.
