I just now found out that one of the best bassists ever is dead.

Indeed. Thunderfingers was probably the most influential bassist ever. He, along with Flea from the Chili Peppers, was the reason I started playing bass instead of guitar. I learned alot listening to him. My dream is to be able to take the lead in a song with a bass like he could. He could play the lead with the bass as well as most guitarists could with a guitar.

John Entwhistle was an extremely accomplished musician on several instruments. His song writing never rose to the level of popularity that would've sustained a lively solo career, but he did produce some rather fun albums in his time; Whistle Rhymes being my personal favorite.

He also always seemed to be in some sort of financial trouble.

It was indeed a sad day when he died.

I've been trying to learn to play bass for awhile. The problem is, I don't have a bass.

I'm supposed to play bass in my band. But we've hit a road block with that.

Anywho, I always thought that he was completely awesome. I could listen to the bass part in, "I Can't Explain," and the bass solo in, "My Generation," over and over again.

Each time I listen to him play, I'm just blown away. Like you said, there a few bassists who can lead a song. And he was definitely one of them.

By the way, I was looking at an article on bassists on Wikipedia. There was a list of influential bassists. And he wasn't on there. So I added him, upon looking I noticed that they took him off. So I made a new section for influential bass players and added him again. I'll have to watch and see if they take him off again. I'll just fix it again. [Evil]

Entwhistle was one of the greats, without a doubt.

You might want to check out Victor Wooten if you get a chance.

A couple of other current great bassists are Billy Sheehan and the bassist in the Liquid Tension Experiment (forgot his name). Both are great.

Another phenomenal dead bassist is James Jamerson, from the Funk Brothers.

They were the house band that backed most of the Motown hits in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. He was unbelievable.
