Now do you have a list, or some idea, books, whatever, just say so.
Sorry if this steps on anyone's toes, I can edit if you think of anything, or delete if you want to do your own.

katharina Gender: female Color: um...green, red, cobalt/gold/black combinations No allergies I live in Texas, so I don't use coats and scarves very often, but I love stuff that's unique to whereever the sender is from. It's like traveling without all the packing.

What do I want?
Books (I'm addicted) Music Movies but please, all of the above should reflect what you think is good. I have what I think I like, but to find out what you like, and to learn to like it to, that is a present beyond the mere thing.
and Local Color--you can send me something about where you live.
Crafts, from poetry to hand knitted socks, as long as it has your heart in it, I'll love it.

Gender-female Colors- Purple, some dark pinks Allergies- I react badly to pretty scented bath products and perfumes (candles too), not quite an allergy, but not good.
I love girly things, horses, music of almost any kind (it'd be hard to get me to really like country), and yarn, seriously give me a few balls of pretty yarn and I'll be your friend forever. Oh good chocolate is nice too.

Tante Shvester (Esther) Female I like the color black, but not to exclusion of other colors. I prefer gifts that are not food, since I keep a kosher diet. I like things that are home made. I can never have enough baubles and jewels. I do not like inspirational plaques with sentimental doggerel. I am not a fan of the artwork of Thomas Kinkaide. But I don't mind things that have a campy sort of humor.
(and you got to know that for favorite color, I was tempted to answer "Blue. No, green! Aaaaagh!)

I'm with Kat on the local stuff. But I on the other hand, am cold. A scarf or a Jayne hat would be nice.
A few interests of mine: -Books (character driven sci-fi and fantasy lite) -movies -chihuahuas
And if you need any other ideas, you can email Xavier (phil dot meyer at gmail dot com).

music: I'm always looking for new music. I have a wide variety of musical tastes from Hank Williams to Bauhaus, so if you get me a CD, surprise me.
I, too, would love to get something that's local to the sender's area.
It doesn't snow here, so scarves, mittens, etc., wouldn't do much good.

As others have said above, I'd love to have something local to the sender's area. Books are good, I like any kind of fiction. Music is also good, especially since I'm having to pretty much rebuild my collection from scratch. I like most kinds except country and rap; generally I prefer the weirder end of the rock/alternative spectrum, but my tastes are eclectic. Really I'm very easy to please, I'll probably be delighted with whatever I get

About me: I like dark chocolate, cooking, music, sewing, computer games, movies, gardening (I live in Phoenix, AZ so gardening has a whole different meaning here from most places). I have 3 cats. I also like frogs.
Oh yeah, and I'm LDS too (so no coffee/tea/alcohol, though I like non-caffeinated herbal teas)

Name: Rebecca Gender: My sex is female, but don't buy me anything because of that. Like Farmgirl, I'm more on the masculine side of female and I really don't like girly stuff. Colors: Blue!!, Green, Black. I hate all "girly" colors, especially pink. Allergies: None, but I'm a vegetarian and I don't like nuts in my chocolate unless it's peanut M&M's. Oh. I HATE anything Hazelnut flavored with a firey passion (which is why I hate nutella). And I don't eat cheese.
About me: I love sci-fi stuff, I'm always looking for a good sci-fi book that I haven't read (and I haven't read a lot), I love music, especially stuff that isn't mainstream, except for rap and country. I loooove dark chocolate with a passion. Don't do anything with perfume, body lotion, etc, though incense or scented oils for burning are cool. I've always wanted a nice incense burner. And "local stuff is cool" for me as well.
I'm going to second Tante on this: I do not like inspirational plaques with sentimental doggerel.
I think that's long enough....

Allergies: Hazelnuts (and I don't like most other nuts), coconut in more than very small amounts (actually an intolerance), rubbing alcohol (although I don't think that's relevant), roses and several other flowers, dogs, rabbits (meaning their fur), grass (again, not relevant, but...), and I'm Mormon, so no coffee, tea, or alcohol products. Oh, I'm also mildly allergic to beeswax and honey and have ultra-sensitive skin.
About me: I like cats, have two. I get cold even in SoCal, so love hats, scarves, gloves, etc. I'm pregnant and have a 19-month-old (who will participate separately.) I sing. I like Star Wars (but the classic three most), but not Star Trek. I love ketchup (Heinz, of course.) I like south Asian and Indian looking prints, fabrics, cards, etc. I sew when my machine is working and unpacked and stuff. I'm very into my Irish heritage. I love bluegrass, Celtic folk music, and traditional American music (other music too, but that's my favorite.) I'm a bibliophile. I do calligraphy. I love to cook. I don't look good in orange, most yellow, or some reds, but look very good in deep, rich browns, navy blue (and blue in general), green, and pastels (though I don't wear as much of them.) Um, I'm running out of "about me". Read my posts.

About me: I am 19 months old (will be 21 months by the beginning of Jan.) I like kitties, duckies, woof-woofs, and pretending to be a bear. I like to color and sing and dance. I especially like music with fiddles, bagpipes, or guitars. I like to play the kazoo (my grandpa taught me how!) I like chocolate, but they feed me enough of that around here (my mommy made me say that.) I love books, but not with too many words. I pull things out of my hair if people try to put them in. I like to help cook and clean. My favorite pastimes are eating, chasing the kitties, hiding things, and following Abba everywhere.

Yes, and some lotions. I just have sensitive skin in general-- I should have mentioned I can't use soap, only Dove, and many lotions and bubble baths are right out.
Emma can't use bath products, either. Eczema and severe dry skin, and she has to use dandruff shampoo for her cradle cap, which still comes back otherwise.

Allergies: cats, rabbits, and ferrets. Can't wear angora, but seem do do fine with cashmere. When I can afford it. Which isn't often.
I would love any papercraft supplies, as I'm a stamper and can always use pretty papers. Stickers are great. I like Christian rock and most country music. I am a music major so I always like more music. I like most things besides country. I like to read. I need more posters for my dorm room. I need a good pair of mittens (not gloves) for my month in Indiana this winter. I am really not too picky. I like seeing what other people pick out.
Posted by jeniwren (Member # 2002) on :
Aren't mittens the best? They're so much better than gloves, IMO. My favorite mitten experience, though, is when they kept me from getting killed.
I was driving to work and a big hairy guy cut me off. I threw up my hand to flip him off and started laughing when I realized I was wearing mittens.
Who knows what Big Hairy Guy would have done if I'd been successful? Those mittens might have saved my life.

OK. Mom's point of view. Had I not been a Hatracker, and participating myself, and monitoring the SoS's activity in this, (and actually encouraging him to participate) I wouldn't allow it, either. In fact, when we signed him up (together), he was a bit shocked that I allowed him to include his real address. He understands that the reason that he could do this is that I was doing it with him.
If I found out that he had done this without my consent (and I guess that it would be pretty easy for me to find out when a package arrives for him from a stranger), he would be in trouble, and probably have his computer activities sharply curtailed, and strictly monitored.
You can't easily trust someone who has violated your trust.
Bottom line, you want your folks to trust you, you've got to be trustworthy.

Raia, you were dating a hatracker and 17 two years ago, that's a bit different, but yeah I can see you were scared.
My mom had no problems with it, but I was 18, and had done similar things on other message boards (though on those I had met pretty much everyone, and they were all visibly my age or younger).

aiua - encouraging someone else to withhold information that has even a remote possibility of causing harm, either to family relationships or to oneself personally, is very irresponsible and disresepctful.
Yes, this forum is ideally set up to be family-friendly and safe. For the most part it succeeds. But caution and thoughtfulness are part of what keeps it so.
Encouraging a young teen to essentially lie to the people who help keep her/him safe in this world - I REALLY think that is unacceptable.
Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :
Jaime, what can you lose? Just ask your mom...you might be surprised.
Posted by Jonathan Howard (Member # 6934) on :
I see the concern, and fully understand it. I didn't participate last year for pretty obvious reasons, but after a while, after meeting some people from here, after talking to others and after my parents realised I'm wisely responsible to choose this forum (and I've had mail sent to and fro this address) - we all believe it's safe.
If I tell my parents I'm participating in something like this they wouldn't mind. I even doubt they'd care whether I told them or not. They trust my judgement and they know I'm naturally skeptic. Especially after studying intel & espionage for the third year.
But I see the concern. Basically, I count myself pretty lucky I landed the way I did.
Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :
I talked to SoS about it, and he thinks that it is better to have a trusting relationship with his parents than to get a cheap present from a stranger.
Besides, he said, family tends to give better presents. (and he hasn't even seen what Hatrack's present is, yet)
Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :
Breyerchic, I wasn't talking about dating a Hatracker, I was talking about participating in this, which is what I said. But yes, I was nervous about that too.
Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :
I know what you said, but you had already by the holidays explained hatrack, and they'd met that person, it would make a difference in most parents perceptions. And there is a difference between 15 and 17.
Posted by blacwolve (Member # 2972) on :
I remember convincing my parents to let me drive to Ohio and spend the night in a hotel with hatrackers I'd never met my senior year. I had to have both my brother and my boyfriend come with me, but they let me. Your parents might be more open to it than you would think.
Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :
At the top of this page is a clicky to "Email this page to someone!" Perhaps you can do that to help explain what you want to do. If Ma knows Hatrack, she is more likely to be open to it. Especially when she reads the mature and responsible advice you get here from most of us.
OK, me.

It's rarely cold here, so anything for cold weather probably wouldn't get much use.
I don't really need a lot, so the best gifts for me either are experiences or in some way double as experiences: like getting something pretty unique to where you live would be cool, because it would be a gift with a story behind it. Books are great. I like to cook. I probably have any cooking implement I could need, but a neat ccookbook or food might make a good gift.

My new and updated Amazon wish list has a few books that either I've read and don't have any more or haven't read yet but I like the author's other books. (I haven't read the Memory of Earth series, as an example, but have read the Ender and Alvin Maker series.)
I am LDS, so (as others have mentioned) no coffee/tea/alcohol. Chocolate is always welcome (except white chocolate). I like flavored hot chocolate mix.
Food items are good - especially if there is a regional specialty where you are from. Anything that reflects your location or is made in your location would be good. As an example, I participated in an exchange (on another forum) two years ago and gave the person a potpourri pie. It was made from bread dough or something similar, with a little pie tin, and had potpourri in it. It was made by a woman who lives in my area.
Even better would be something made by the sender - more personal.
I like science fiction and fantasy books, plus some mysteries. I like to scrapbook, although I haven't done any for awhile. I wanted to get some more supplies - pens that are safe, and a photo cutter (I can't cut straight!). There are scrapbooking computer programs for around $10 at Walmart - I haven't bought one or really checked into them yet. If it has Web page capability, that would be good.
If my person wants more details, they can e-mail a third party to ask me or use an e-mail that won't give away their identify.
Oh, yeah ... I wouldn't mind a CD - especially Christmas music and/or something in either German or Spanish. I took both in high school but didn't practice after that. My younger daughter wants to learn German (she's nearly 10) and I wanted to refresh my Spanish. Two years ago I got a CD of Christmas songs in Spanish - some are traditional English songs and some are traditional Hispanic songs (going by ethnicity here, not nationality). Anyway, Christmas songs in either language would be really cool. My favorite CD of Christmas music is Christmas on the Border, but then I don't have very many Christmas CDs.
Okay, I've (finally) got my list on here. And, in case anyone didn't know or didn't remember, I'm female. I know that can make a difference in a gift.

Name: Jesse Gender: male Favorite color: grey Allergies: none Wish list: date with a supermodel, marrying said supermodel, something special from your area if you're from an exotic location (like Ohio or Kansas), dynamite (I love blowing stuff up), stacks of hundred dollar bills, expensive jewelry, etc. Things I like: Denver Broncos or Colorado Avalanche stuff, my favorite musicians are Yo-Yo Ma, Lang-Lang, Joe Satriani, Paul Cardall, Steve Via, and Yngvie Malmsteen, engineering stuff, etc.
Jesse

Huh, Jesse, that's quite an exciting list. Wonder what the shipping costs are on a supermodel? I don't think they weigh very much.
Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :
But on the other hand she probably would arrive in a bad state if she had travelled with the luggages in a plane.
Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :
Who said anything about a plane? I was thinking UPS.
Ground.

Jesse, do you realize just how high-maintenance that would be for you?
Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :
I kinda wish we had added "age" to the personal info, just because sometimes it is kind of hard to tell, and it might influence what kinds of things we think the person would like.
Guess I will try to figure out an approximate by reading past posts and comments...

<-- is 40 years old.
Likes rocking chairs, knitting, Ben-Gay...
Posted by Eisenoxyde (Member # 7289) on :
Farmgirl, it would depend on the supermodel... One of my friends has a cousin who is a supermodel and she isn't too high maintenance. Right now she's taking a break from modeling to get her masters degree in aviation engineering. (Who said beautiful girls aren't smart?)
Too bad for me she's married though...
Jesse
P.S. My age is 27 in case you were wondering, I know I definitely don't act it...

I think this is why it is hard to buy things for me. My family finds it terribly inconvenient.

I don't know about age, but I kind of wish my person had posted the color scheme of their living room!
Posted by Brinestone (Member # 5755) on :
For what it's worth, rather than listing my favorite colors, I listed the colors that I have in my apartment, just in case. I'm practical like that, I guess.
Also, with all the requests for something "local color," I think that would be fun. But what on earth is unique and cool about Utah? A CTR ring?
Posted by lucy hummer (Member # 7740) on :
I *breyerchic04* am 20, but I like knitting and rocking chairs as well as sparkly clothes, hot guys, animals, good chocolate, so judging my presents by the age would be hard. Though i wouldn't really appriciate ben gay. A gay guy named ben on the other hand might be appriciated, though straight would be perrferred.

You've got to be kidding, Brinestone!
Half the photos I have framed and hanging on my wall were ones I took in Utah. I think you have one of the most beautiful states in the Union...
(then again, I'm from Kansas, so what do I know about landscape?)

No, they have those other places, too. Now, Bikini Cuts...

I'm sure my giftee would appreciate modest swimwear that would not necessarily be in his/her size.
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
Well, if it was a guy, and you had worn it...

Y'know, it's strange, but when I did my big train trip across the US... the Rockies weren't actually my favorite part. Maybe it's me just wanting to go along with the popular aesthetic... but I liked the desert and the prairie a lot more than the Rockies.

I got things for my person! I got things for my person! Now I'm gonna go write a letter to accompany it.
Posted by Xavier (Member # 405) on :
I drove from upstate NY to San Diego and then back to Omaha, Nebraska and my favorite area by far was the drive through southern Utah.
I stopped to look at some canyon of beautiful view at least a half dozen times.

I just need to get a card and write a note for my person. And I need to do it soon, or I'm likely to keep some of it for myself... 'cause I like it...
*Deliberately looks away from gift*
I'm not looking... It's not for me... I'm not looking...
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
Emma didn't find anything for her person. Although she did enjoy playing with things while "shopping".
Posted by kojabu (Member # 8042) on :
I have one part of the thing for my person picked out. I just need to get the last part. Wee
Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :
I know what I'm sending, now I only have to shop for it.
Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :
Mine went out yesterday (Gift, card, and "filler") and I was told it would be delivered in 4-7 business days. I'll just be happy if it gets there before Christmas.
Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :
Got it all. Need to box it and mail it.
Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :
I'll shop Wednesday and send it the same day (stupid repairman who made me lose my entire day yesterday...)

There are hardwood oak-y looking floors, and some wood furniture. Walls are, uh, mauve, I guess, and the sofa is muted colors of grey, mauve, blue, with grey predominant. Quiet blues and browns go well.
There. Did that help?

I've been told I need more ideas, so here goes.
I like fun, unique stuff. I like horses, but I don't tend to have horsey memorabilia in my house. I'm into slightly oriental stuff, rich fabrics, and interesting decoration. I like to cook, or would, if I was ever home. I'm into oriental food, too, I like the complex flavors. I've been looking for one of these but I can't find one in town. I watch a lot of movies and tv on dvd, mainly buffy, firefly and farscape. I like scarves, hats, dangly earrings. I read two or three books a month, usually fantasy. I also sew, fly two string kites, and write fiction.
Let me know if you need more.
Ni!

Whee! This is fun fun fun! I'm searching out all the cool local stuff from New Jersey! I'm making hand-made stuff. In my recipient's favorite color scheme. Based on age and gender, and avoiding anything allergenic. Should be in the mail by mid-week, I guess.
Posted by lucy hummer (Member # 7740) on :
Just to keep it available for people.
Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :
Hmmm, maybe after KPC's last appointment today we can try taking Emma somewhere else to see if she finds what she needs for her recipient. And ship the package for mine.

You guys are really on the ball. I am going shopping this afternoon though. I will have everything shipped by Saturday just like I promised!

Are we suppose to say who the gift is from?
Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :
Yeah I think when we send it we can go ahead and reveal our secret identity.
