Last year we had a comprehensive gift exchange, and more than fifty people participated. I think everyone was happy. The present quid sent me from Sri Lanka actually traveled to the USA TWICE after I didn't pick it up from the post office in time and it was sent back. (It was wonderful, by the way, and someone commented on The Jam Fruit Tree in my bookshelf just last month.) [Smile]

I think it was a real success - I had a blast. There were one or two people that didn't get a present, and we are going to try very hard to make sure that doesn't happen this year. I and Coccinelle will be happy to organize it again this year. What do you think? [Smile]

To participate in the Hatrack December Gift Exchange:

E-mail the following to HatrackGiftExchange@gmail.com:
Nov. 30
1. We will send an e-mail to everyone who has e-mailed with their mailing address telling them who they got, and that person's mailing address.
2. Everyone will e-mail back with aknowledgement.

Dec 10
Mail packages by this date. Do not spend more than $10 on the present, although if you find something perfect and it's still less than twenty, that's okay. The spending limit is to keep this from becoming a financial burden on anyone. :)It's important to mail it by the tenth because we have some college students and last year there were some who didn't get their packages until they came back after December break.
------
Last year, I got a book and two fabulous Bollywood musicals from quid, along with some Sri Lankan candy. It was yummy and very fun. [Smile] The year before, I got a Chinese cookbook from Annie. I love this game. Sign up to play! [Smile]

This is really a lot of fun. I'll be participating in my third year! [Smile] My first year I got a great DVD musical from Speed, and last year raventh1 sent me the coveted Yo-yo Ma/Bobby McFerrin CD. Good times!!

Posted by sarcasticmuppet (Member # 5035) on :

I got a Fozzy Bear doll from Boris last year, and I made Mrs. M some bracelets. I won't do it unless I can for sure participate (oh the life of a poor college student) but I will attest to the funness factor. [Smile]

I just sent an email. I love the gift I got from Kwea and Jenni. It was a battery powered reading light that clips to the book.

Posted by pfresh85 (Member # 8085) on :

I'll consider doing this if I can get someone to think up gift ideas for me. I suck at finding a gift for someone without being overly obvious about it.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Remember! Home made gifts are the best. So if you can do that, do so. We'll also need a "what I want for the holidays" thread, that tells about allergies, and genders and the like. Kat, you said we, but if you need any help, let me know, I love organizing, and have quite a bit of free time on my hands.

Last year I got three nutbutters and an LM Montgomery book from Plaid. And I sent a package of stuff nothing too exciting to Zevlag just days before he left on his mission.

I think I'll do it. I'll send an e-mail tomorrow.

Posted by jeniwren (Member # 2002) on :

I loved it last year. *Giving* the present was as much fun as receiving. I'd never sent anything to Sri Lanka before. [Smile]

I'd like to join in, but I can't make those dates. We're leaving for FL on the night of Nov 29 and won't be back until the 11th. Can I still play if you promise not to give me a college student?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Yes, definitely. [Smile]

The chances of us remembering will increase enormously if you include your request in the e-mail.

Posted by Theaca (Member # 8325) on :

Ooooh. I've been too busy to consider doing this the past 2 years. Wasn't there one two years ago too? Anyway, I might be in this time. Still thinking. [Smile]

Posted by JemmyGrove (Member # 6707) on :

I've never done this before -- I was too much of a lurker until this year. You all promise you're not just hyping it up so us gullible weenies will give you presents? [Wink]

Posted by Papa Janitor (Member # 7795) on :

I suppose it should be made clear that this is not (as far as I know) an officially sanctioned Hatrack event. I'm relatively confident that the Cards are supportive of such endeavors, as they contribute to the "community" of Hatrack (confident enough to sticky the thread, anyway).

But despite its imprecise wording, please let this serve as a disclaimer of sorts, that Hatrack River does not guarantee delivery of gifts, takes no responsibility for the sharing of personal information such as physical addresses, etc., etc., yadda yadda yadda, bada bing, bada boom, Betty Boop.

I wish I could. I don't know what my address will be by then, though [Frown]

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Kama, we could send it to Poland. Will you be seeing your family at Christmas? You could get it there.

Or, alternatively, if you still want to play, whoever has you could wait until you know your address. You may not get it by...um...oh, you know, the end of December *waffles*, but you still could play if you are willing to celebrate January instead.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Yay! *dance* I'm in!

Also, quid... maybe this will finally induce me to send YOUR package as well! [Kiss] [Embarrassed]

Whups, I forgot about the hatrack moment thing. I'm not in.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

You don't have to do the Hatrack moment thing to play. Confession: I included it because 1) it sounded like fun, and 2) gave me an excuse to bump the thread everyday. [Smile]

The quote game was used last year in the downtime while people waited to get their matches and presents. kat posted a favorite moment and people guessed who it belonged to. It doesn't have to be about you, just a memorable hatrack moment. Hatrack moments are not a requirement, but definately fun for us to read [Smile]

I for one would like to say that I have no earthly idea what these would be. Enough of the people and circumstances and relationships and events here are still new to me, so I wouldn't mind hearing about an "obvious" event that may be what will define you most to me as a person on hatrack.

I do remember that Neomon was one of the first people to welcome me to hatrack, and he (you are a HE, aren't you?) made me feel like it mattered to someone that I had come. That meant a lot to me.

You know what ? This year somebody will have a gift from Paris...

I will be happy to participate !! I send the E-mail today [Big Grin]

It's really really fun !

Just, what is "Favorite Hatrack moment (for the game)
" ?

What do you mean by that, Katie ?

Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :

You tell people about your favorite moment on Hatrack. Then, when everybody is waiting for his package and the thread becomes boring, Katie posts some favorite moments and people have to guess who's it is. It's fun!
So, two gifts from France this year! (e-mail sent)

I hate to say this, but, um, as much as I love you all, I hope I don't get someone in another country. We can't afford out-of-the-US postage right now. I'm sorry. I love you all, but I just can't afford that much! Can we maybe e-mail or have a thread designating if we're willing and able to send something out of their own country, so people who can't won't be asked to, and people who can and will be happy to can have the excitement?

*feels totally guilty and selfish*

Um...younger than 30. And female.

There are enough people playing that this game, in its early stages, could be hard. So, we proceed to hints.

Hmm...I don't think the game is working as well this year, and that makes sense. It was invented to give me an excuse to bump it every day, but since it's been pinned, it doesn't need to be bumped.

What do y'all think about us just posting a quote from various Rackers without the guessing element? These are too good to not use, and so many are not specific that guessing is somewhat random, I know. What do you think?

Posted by aiua (Member # 7825) on :

Works for me.

Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :

I actually came in here and tried to guess, but the quote doesn't say anything to me... If the others are ok with what you've proposed here I'll go along. [Smile]

Posted by amira tharani (Member # 182) on :

Works for me too.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Fine with me. Mine would be too obvious, anyway. [Big Grin]

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

I think we should unpin the thread now. If it's unpinned, we might be able to start guessing again because more people would open it if they saw it...don't you think?

When threads are stickied, I completely stop paying attention to them after a while. I don't even register what their titles are unless I make a point to read them and remember.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Because of Thanksgiving, I will not be near a computer for almost five days. I think it should stay pinned during that time.

But after, unpinning might be better? Maybe we can petition Papa Moose's opinion then. [Smile]

In the meantime, I'll try to post a new quote every morning, and if it looks like we have a surplus of quotes (and with almost 70 people playing, we will), then I'll start with every morning and every afternoon. At the end, for all the lazy people who mysteriously have something do other than follow this thread, I'll make a post with all the quotes. I love these things - it's very cool to see what people like.

So, to recap:

Leonide, writing for her and Strider:
quote:
Favorite Hatrack Moment:
Everytime a new couple gets together, the initial "are they/aren't they," the hidden innuendo, a few people knowing but not telling, and then finally the "yes, it's true" thread/convo.

Allegra:
quote:
My favorite hatrack moment is when I arrived at Kamacon. I started to walk
in and Tom D asked me who I was. I explained to him that I had never
actually been on hatrack, but that I was there with a friend. He gave me a
quick quiz over LoTR and I think Monty Python and the Holy Grail to prove
that I was in the right place. I knew then that these were people I would
enjoy spending time with.

Alternatively, guessing could be done "20 Questions" style, with no guesses acknowledged until 20 yes/no questions have been asked and answered. Then it wouldn't be quite so random.

Aaaaand my favorite Hatrack Moment happened while reading the
"reviewer comments unlikely to be used on book jackets" thread during
math class. I laughed out loud, something that never happens in math,
most people being asleep, and almost receivced a detention. However, I
convinced the teacher that what I was doing was, in fact, much more
interesting and useful than what he was trying to teach (the quadratic
equation for the sixth time) and we ended up reading them out to the
rest of the class.

Over 70 people have signed up. (Yay! [Smile] ) Catherine and I will spend Wednesday evening sorting out all the matches, and we'll send out the e-mails that night.

BEFORE THEN:

Everyone MUST post in the "what I want" thread. There are several lurkers and many mysterious long-time posters. It is best if everyone posts before the e-mails are sent out so as soon as someone gets their giftee, they can see what he/she/they said.

Do we really have only one week to send our packages? That's starting to seem a little unreasonable to me, especially for those who plan on making something...

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

It has to be that soon - otherwise they may not get there before ... the end of December.

If someone wants something that can't be put together that fast, then maybe that can be a separate present for the individual. We are headed out on vacation and people are scattering, and I certainly would like everyone to get their presents before the end of December.

In other words, if it takes longer than a week to make, it may not be a good idea. I'm sorry. The token doesn't matter as much as what it represents and the joy of being part of the exchange, I think. [Smile]

[Roll Eyes]

Way to miss the point.

[Razz]

(And as to my variation on the rules . . . have you ever played twenty questions with a large number of people, like say a forum? 20 questions gets used up pretty quickly when any shmuck can just come along and say "Is it Kat?" instead of asking a question that would substantially narrow the list down.)

first hand accounts about things happening in other parts of the

item, and the experiences of our gulf coast Hatrackers have made
hurricanes more real for me than they've ever been before. I worry,
of course, when I know a member of the board is in harm's way, and am
relieved when they check in, but from then on the words and
experiences of someone I "know" mean so much more to me than any
other way of finding out what's going on.

I'll take a shot at a somewhat less snarky list. Let's see...

01) Being gay is not natural, aside from some perverted penguins, and some swans, and the occasional monkey but you know what they're like. Oh, and this dog I once had.

02) Acceptance of gay marriage will legitimize gayness and implicitly encourage normal, moral, innocent people who totter on the very brink of sexual experimentation, to try gay sex. Sweet, sweet, gay sex.

03) If we allow gays to marry it will start us sliding on the slippery slope that zooms past polyandry and polygamy, dips sharply into incest, and lands us directly into the pit of bestiality where we can buy tickets and go do it again but with our arms up this time.

04) The concept of gay marriage violates the very definition of marriage itself, a definition that has existed since man joined together with woman. Or with several women. Or with the widow of a man the first man slayed in combat. Or with a woman attached to a valuable piece of property. Oh, and they have to be the same color and/or tribe, did I mention that?

05) Expanding the definition of marriage will devalue marriage itself, because encouraging more people to commit to one person instead of screwing around just isn't the sort of thing our country stands for.

06) The central purpose of marriage is to raise productive children, obviously something gay people simply cannot do unless they adopt, inseminate themselves, or have children from a previous straight marriage. And then it's still wrong. Seriously.

07) Children growing up in a gay household are sure to become gay what with all the, you know, gayness lying around.

08) Gay marriage is specifically denied by my religion and that law, unlike all the other scriptural laws which we have since abandoned in the face of scientific discoveries, social changes, and even just other scriptural laws made later on that kinda contradict the first laws but not really, must be strictly enforced.

09) Children need strong male and female role models to grow up healthy. So not only can't gays marry, but some of you straight people better get on the gender-stereotype bandwagon. You! Sissy boy! Get a football, you want your kid to grow up weak?

10) Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Ha! Deny that one!

When is the time deadline for this? I am debating on entering. (And trying to get some more words in for Nano at the same time.) I know someone might wonder about why I would be, but sending my name and address to someone is a huge deal for me. Paranoia is like second nature despite how wonderful you all are. I suppose my favourite memory/moment/thing isn't really a specific
instance, but rather a process. Having been here for what feels like
forever, my favourite part of Hatrack is seeing the ebbs and flows of
the forum. I like seeing the antagonistic people - and then seeing
them get kicked (or booed) off. I like seeing the emergence of
intelligent newbies - and then seeing them develop into fantastically
real online personalities instead of just the name-on-the-screen that
they could be. I like watching for the lurkers to come out of hiding
- and then reveling in the fact that I actually have a higher post
count than some people [Smile] So again, my favourite moment isn't
actually a moment - it's the continuing sense of community that keeps

A suggestion:

Next year could we bump up the max spending amount from $10 to $15? It was difficult to stay under $10. I ended up spending $12.50 (without tax). What do you guys think? Maybe we could vote?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I put the limit at $10 because we have many college students and because of the shipping cost, so that no one would feel like they couldn't afford to play.

But I think last year the expected limit was $10, but it was up to $20 if you found something perfect. [Smile]

How's the shopping going? There are a still a few people who haven't acknowledged that they have recieved their assignment. Please let us know. [Smile]

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

I think it's a "spirit of the rule" kind of thing. My gift was homemade and the material cost was under $10, but it would have cost me WAY over $10 to purchase the same thing retail as a finished product.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Yea, well, I seem to remember, from the "thank you" thread of last year's exchange, that many of the gifts sounded well above the $10 limit. And some probably cost that much just to ship.

So I'm going with the "spirit of the rule", as you say.

FG

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I ignore those guidelines completely. I always have, and always will.

Posted by Tante Shvester (Member # 8202) on :

My gift would seem like it cost more than $10, but it really didn't. For the homemade bit, I used materials I had left from other crafts projects, so I didn't really count it into the cost. For some other things that I hunted down, the person that I got it from wouldn't charge me -- just told me to make a donation to charity. So, all together, I spend not so much for a (I hope) nice gift.

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Héhéhé !!

I have bought it !
After a long long time when i make multiple circle into the commercial site of "Les halles", I have found the gift. It was hard to discover that.
First i search for a cooking book. We are in France, and cooking is a great pleasure. I saw many beautiful book : Chocolat cooking, cake cooking, patisserie cooking, meat cooking, vegetable cooking... The gourmet 's dreamed library ! And when i am decided for a book, a terrible idea came in my mind : It's in French !

And how the hatracker can read it ?

I was desappointed... My lunch time were finishing, and no gift found... And, there is an illumination !!! (aaaaaaaaaaa - sound of a choral)

I went totally at random in a shop "nature et découverte". I walked between the racks full of many object, and in the back of the shop i saw the most beautiful teddy bears i never seen. I went for touch it and... Fabulous !! Incredible sweet !! Perfect !

I also bought a postcard with a beautiful view of Paris to add in the box.
And tomorow i'll send it [Smile]

But who will have it ???? [Smile]

I mailed my gift today, but I’ve no idea when it will arrive as it is from the UK to the USA.

Some advice for people receiving international shipments – don’t read the customs slip if you want to be surprised when you unwrap the gift. I had to declare the exact contents.

Anyhoot, I just bought the gift today, but I will be mailing it on the morrow. I have always wanted to have what I purchased, so I know she will like it. Its a very lovable and likeable item indeed.

I SECOND THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to send my gift with a detailed customs declaration, so if you want to be surprised, don't read it.

That said, I also didn't wrap it (though it is boxed separately inside the package) so if you're gonna save it for Christmas or something, don't open the package either. But I really hope you don't wait. I'm very excited to know what you think. [Smile]

I send it !!!!

So like Kettricken and KarlEd, I needed to write the contenance.

I ask for the number of day for the trip : It will make around 6 to 10 days.
I put some italian caramels for the bear. [Smile]

Choobak, that sounds so adorable I can hardly stand it. [Smile] [Smile]

Sounds like the shopping is going okay - I'm glad for that. I must admit that I have neither shopped nor mailed yet, but the package preparation will probably happen tomorrow night and then I can mail it Friday during lunch. It's the last week of school and things have been crazy, so I can just imagine how some of the college students are doing. [Smile]

If anyone is having trouble or to run something past their giftee, we are happy to serve as go-betweens. [Smile]

Most are, and if not, you can use the Automated Postal System for most things. Most post offices allow access to them 24/7. (Just be aware that you can't mail really huge boxes and the machines don't take cash.)

It's also quite dishonest of them, but the automated postal machines here charge you a higher rate than the tellers do. I got a quote of $12.30 from the machine for a box I wanted to send Priority Mail - the teller said it was $7.45. Apparently you pay for convenience...or at least, you do in Seattle :-\.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I've never tried to mail from the machine, but stamps in them here are 50 cents each.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Wow, here it's the same rate whether you use the machine or talk to a person. Stamps are also the same price in the machine. And you can also do it online and have it picked up, BTW, although I think that has a small surcharge.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

(We almost always use the machine. No line at most times, no hassle with getting in the doors before they close, we can take stuff at 3 in the morning if we want-- although our local one, because of vandalism, has started closing the doors at 10 pm, despite it being Christmas mailing season. So we have to drive an extra 7 minutes to get to the next one.)

Posted by romanylass (Member # 6306) on :

I mailed mine today!

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Wow, I think our automated machines may charge the same on packages, but because I want to have "fragile" stamped on most things, because I'm usually shipping china horses, I always go to a person. But I know the stamps are more, because they just use the same rate as the stamps being more in the old coin machines.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

breyerchic, you can write "Fragile" on your own packages, or even get a stamp, and have the postal worker come pick them up. Or just use the machine to pay postage if there's a long line, write "fragile" on it, and skip the line and drop it at the counter-- I've done that before, and they don't usually have a problem with it. [Smile]

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

The scary college kids would have a problem with that at our post office (the ones who's mom's send them 20 ton boxes of cookies every week, and get really upset if someone "cuts" to go to the passport window.

So the Dec. 10th date -- that's like the $10 thing, right? A guideline as opposed to a rule?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Well...it honestly depends on who you have. If you have an international or a college student, then it's much more firm. It's part of keeping the cost to play down, because faster mail is more expensive and we don't want to set things up where it becomes burdensome for anyone.

I still really like the Dec. 10 deadline. That way, everyone gets them about the same time, and it's fun to share in the stories and dish. It's no fun being the last person to get a present and want to share and everyone else is bored and has already moved on. Also, there was one person who never got a present last year, and since are 50% more people playing this year, an early mail date means we can pinpoint possible slipping-through-cracks incidents.

But for a concrete, revealing answer, we start sending "You haven't confirmed yet. Get thee to a post office." e-mails next Tuesday.

No apologies necessary! I didn't want anything from the Swiss Colony anyway.

As an aside, I hadn't realized that the Swiss were such colonizers. Exactly what were some of their colonies? Did they impose the force of their will upon the natives with those nifty Army Knives?

...they came in big ships. And they had many wonders. Pale skin. Eyes the color of the sky. And these little pocket knives that unfolded to reveal tweezers and corkscrews. We were powerless to oppose them...

A saturday morning is when I'd expect the longest lines. Usually I've gotten quoted 3 to five days on prioity going from my house to about the same area yours went. I ship about 20 packages a year out, so the PO here loves me.

The line at my post office was both brief and chatty, and the guy who rang me up was extremely friendly, so my package shipping experience was a positive one.

My gift is on its way... according to the automated postage machine it should be delivered in 3-5 days. Yeah, right. Maybe it'll be in San Francisco in 3-5 days, but we'll see. By Christmas for sure though...

Posted by Stray (Member # 4056) on :

I sent mine this morning; it's going to...someplace in Europe [Wink] and the guy said it would take about a week and a half. It should still be there in time for Christmas if all goes well. The next-fastest option cost nearly $20, so I had to go with this one--hope it gets there in time!

Nope. Still not here.

Probably because it's Jersey. And not the middle of nowhere part of Jersey where I'm from [Razz]

Yeah. I'm from the middle of somewhere! Malls to the left of me, multiplexes to the right, here I am...

I was once nowhere, but not in the middle. More like the outskirts of nowhere.

Okay... I am going to have to send my package out on Monday. My shopping was successful today though. I found the last two items I wanted to include, one of which needs to be crafted up.

Woo-hoo! I got my gift! Thanks erosomniac! It arrived yesterday, but I only discovered it when I was on my way out the door to a party yesterday evening. Happily, the party was an hour and a half away, so I had plenty of time to listen to one of the two CDs he sent.

The CD that I listened to was by a group I'd never heard of called The Notwist, and I was pretty impressed! Good stuff. I haven't listened to the second CD yet, but it looks like it'll be fun too--it's a collection of music from Hawaii, where erosomniac is originally from. I can't wait to listen to it.

Again, thanks!

Just so whoever has me knows, I had the package sent to my parents house because my success rate of getting packages that are mailed to my apartment has been 2 failures and 1 success. I told my mom to let me know when it gets there, so I can post here, but I won't be able to open it until the 17th.

On Friday, a UPS truck pulled up to the house. Son of Shvester and I were jumping up and down. "Presents! I hope it's for me!" It wasn't. I was the stuff I ordered for my nephew.

Yesterday, a delivery van pulled up. "Presents! Presents!" Nope. A big ole tank o' oxygen and some phlegm buckets.

But I'm keeping an eye out!
[Eek!] <-- me with my eyes out.

But Tante, I put a lot of thought into those phlegm buckets! I was sure you'd love them!

Well, so much for *that* present.

Another joy in doing my present was making a snowflake for a card. I... don't do Christmas cards, as I invariably leave someone important off my list, so when I do need to do one, I get creative.

And so this one's a paper snowflake. It's also one of my favourite ones I've ever made. [Big Grin] Or had my mom make...

In other words, this activity brought joy to me - and will hopefully do so to my victim!

Mine is wrapped (badly, in bubble wrap and brown paper, not anything christmassy) and posted! I had the day off school today thanks to the Hemel Hempstead fire. Be reassured - I'm fine and no one is seriously hurt, but you can see the cloud from Stanmore and we're a good hour's drive away!

I think mine might have arrived on Saturday, but if so, it came after the regular post. Chris called me on my way to work this morning to say that there was a package in the door and he thought it might be my Hatrack Secret Santa. At any rate, I'll certainly check when I get home and post in the Dear SS thread. [Smile]

Yay! Finally, I got my present sent on its merry little way. Now, I am going to cross my fingers and toes that the fragile item inside will not be broken along the way. Oh, please let the mail gods be kind to my poor package. I did use plenty of big bubble wrap, but even bubble wrap cannot protect everything. (But oh how fun it is to pop!)

larisse, will it help for me to say I've mailed 20 china horses with legs no bigger than straws in the past five years, usings bubble wrap and toilet paper, and none have been broken. Several went to Alaska, one to Europe. But I tried mailing a rubber one and it melted totally messing up the consistency so it couldn't be fixed, luckily, rubber horses aren't as valuable as china ones.

Emma's package has been sent Priority. (I can't believe it's that expensive to mail a package that weighs 2 lbs., 4 oz.! Stupid "zones".) It's in a QVC box, and whoever gets it should open carefully because there's a letter on the very top. S/he should also check the bottom for a large envelope containing the last part of the gift (4 things in total), and s/he may also want to open the letter last if s/he wishes to be surprised by the gifts.

So when y'all send it, just post and confirm. [Smile]

I have a test tonight, and I have beehives tomorrow night. Which means that list-checking will probably not take place until later this week. And then, the inquisitive e-mails. Mine finally (sorry) got out in the mail yesterday (with a great deal of assistance from Mama). It's not going to a college student or overseas, so it shouldn't be a huge problem. It'll be there before Christmas, certainly.

Um... I think I'm seeking redemption for shipping it late, and yet I'm still making excuses.... I'd better stop that.

I love the should - like you're not sure if it will happen or not, but all signs point to yes. I'm picturing a package busily addressing itself and moseying over to the post office, stopping for cars along the way like in Toy Story II.

Yes, I'm sorry, promises don't count. I promised the project I'm working at work to the recipient last week. Unexpected complications came up, and I'm still working on it. So, a confirmation only counts if it is "I have sent it." [Smile]

Now I have to go and work on that aforementioned project. breyerchic has custody of the December Stick. If she finds it necessary to thwap you with it, you'll be singing "White Christmas" for the next four months. Plus, all your shoes will grow bells.

Added: Okay, that sounded sort of grumpy. I'm sorry - stupid project, and school is going only okay. I'm hiding now.

Since the issue has come up, I'm not ungrateful...I just haven't received anything yet. [Frown] My poor mailman must wonder why I've taken to walking out there while he is putting the mail in the boxes rather than waiting until he finishes to go get my mail. [Wink] On the other hand, if it was sent another way, I could have missed it, as my mother was in the hospital most of last week and I was back and forth during the day to see her. But, wouldn't they have left something indicating that I had a package? I rarely get packages delivered other than in the mail, so I don't know quite how that works.

On the other hand, I don't think my person has received theirs yet either. [Dont Know]

No lawnchair for me, but then I don't need it. I can see the mailboxes for my apartment complex out the front window when I sit at my desk working (I work at home). So, all I have to do is open the blinds and I can keep an eye out for when he (or she, sometimes) arrives. [Big Grin]

Erosomniac, I can sympathize. A couple of years back I had a mail carrier that had a very...laid back attitude toward mail delivery. I'd get bills after they were due, magazines would never arrive, stuff mailed to me by friends and family would arrive weeks late--it was really a pain.

Ever seen Better Off Dead? My mail carrier was pretty much that movie's mailman made flesh.

Is that your mail carrier's fault or the post office's? Doesn't the post office just give the mail to the carrier and then he gives it to you? I can't imagine he has much control over the situation. I'd like to think your carrier wouldn't stash your bills under his seat and save them for later..

There are still a few people who haven't mailed yours yet. Most have sent explanations and passionate promises to do it today (yay! That would be great.) There are a few who have not responded.

It's okay - it's not the end of December yet. There is still time. [Smile] It doesn't have to fancy or complicated. We are all here because we love books and usually science fiction. Is there a book that you like? I love presents like that - it's what I got last year. I got a book and movies that I would never have picked out on my own but enjoyed very much. [Smile] So today, after word, just head on over to the bookstore and you can mail it priority tomorrow. It probably won't make it by the 25th, but it's the December exchange so that's okay anyway. Just do it today. [Smile] Your giftee will love it, and you'll be happy. [Smile]

Remember, too, that if you don't send your gift, Katie and breyerchic are contractually bound to buy a gift on your behalf. And you don't want to cost them money, do you?

[Wink]

Hey, I'm making the spare gifts, Tom!!!

Yes, it’s out and yes I was bad and late, but they said at the post office the express would have it there before Christmas. So…. Hopefully my apology letter and express post will make it all ok.
I really wish I wasn’t so busy………..
Sigh…… maybe next year.

Oh and I got a great pack of goodies from Rayann. Lots of toys and stuff that’ll make it to my desk at work for hours of entertainment. Thanks!

I hate the slowness of international mail. [Frown]

I sent my gift on 6th December and I haven’t seen a posting saying it has arrived. I’m also waiting to receive mine, which I’ve been told has been sent, so is just taking it’s time. I’m hoping it arrives tomorrow or Wednesday, or I will not get it until after Christmas.

So, to whoever sent mine, if I don’t post tomorrow to say it arrived you are unlikely to hear from me until next year as I’m out Wednesday evening, then away for Christmas and have friends staying for New Year, so I’m unlikely to be able to get to a computer until the 2nd or 3rd of January.

Express will be there "before Christmas"? Sheesh, they're slacking. You're supposed to get guaranteed overnight delivery to most places in the States. Or your money back. (Yup, I've demanded my money back before. Three times. But the other four, it worked.)

Yay! Almost everyone has sent their present, and most of those who haven't have sent explanations and promises to do so soon. This is compeletely fine - there is still time. [Smile] It's the December exchange. [Smile]

There is, however, ONE person who has neither confirmed nor responded to e-mails. No, there's not a chance under heaven or earth that we are going to say who it is, either now or ever. However, we know who you are. You still have time - it's still okay. [Smile] I'm sure things are crazy - that happens in December. We totally understand, and if it just can't happen for you, that's okay. Just let us know, and we'll make everything better. [Smile] Thank you for playing, everybody. [Smile]

I'm glad you like them. We tried to get blue or gold (yellow) stuff, but there just isn't much out here...

I let my kids pick what to get you. Could you tell? [Big Grin]

(You probably don't want to take the silly string to work unless you plan to decorate your boss with it. [Big Grin] )

Hey, that might make for an improvement in some bosses. [Razz]

Silly String...Never thought of that. But, when I worked as a tutor, we had a bottle of bubbles in the office, and when anyone got too stressed out, the bottle was handed to them with the advice they go out on the patio and blow a few bubbles and relax for a little while.

One is the loneliest number that you'll ever do
Two can be as bad as one
It's the loneliest number since the number one

So you do know who you are, and need to send your gift.

I mailed mine today through priority mail! I hope it reaches my giftee in time for Christmas, the postmaster said it would get there in two or three days.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Okay, well over 70 presents have been sent out, but there are NOT over 70 people in the Dear Secret Santa thread. [Smile] When you get your gift, please post there so we can know everything's okay and your giftee can know it arrived. [Smile]

That's the next big step isn't it? [Smile]

*still waiting for my present*

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Yours has been sent. [Smile]

Nobody get too antsy - there are still many, many presents still in transit. It's the December exchange, and we're barely past the middle of the month. [Smile] Everybody gets a present. [Smile]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Hard not to get antsy if you're going away next week, though. I can understand that. [Wink]

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Catherine and breyerchic will be here, and I'm sure I'll be around a computer somewhere. [Smile] I'll probably check in about once a day. [Smile]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

No, I mean, those of us who are going out of town and still expecting packages. They'll probably get here in the next few days, but the anxiety level goes up.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Oh, sorry. I did think the concern over me being gone was odd, but hey. *laugh*

Katie, you know I'm lost without you. [Razz]

I sent mine UPS Ground today. That means it won't get there until next week, so my person will be getting a Boxing Day present.

Posted by erosomniac (Member # 6834) on :

I leave on Thursday, so if my gift isn't here by then, you won't hear updates from me about it until January.

The thing I ordered for my person FINALLY arrived today, so I will mail it out Priority tomorrow. [Big Grin]

That person was me....I DID mail it, but I had no internet for over a week.

[Big Grin]

I got mine. Yay! I posted in the DSS thread already.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Wow, I think that's everyone. There is one person who hasn't confirmed for sure, but at last note, the prezzie was ready and was going to be mailed out the next day, and this was a week ago, so I think it has been taken care of.

*cautiously celebrates* Yay! I think that's everyone. For anyone who has not recieved your present yet, we can say the following: It's in the mail. [Smile]

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

And in January, we'll go through and figure out who hasn't recieved one. Or at least I will.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

breyerchic and Coccinelle have done all the listy things involved in this, which is great, because listy things blow my planning circuits. [Smile]

*very happy*

Question: who was my gifter? I got an e-mail earlier, and a package today, and I'm not finding a screen name anywhere!

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Eisenoxyde [Smile]

I'm so sorry I'm late with my thank you. Valentine014 sent 3 adorable onesies for Aerin, in my favorite pink from The Children's Place, one of my favorite stores. The best part is that they fit her now. Thank you Valentine014!

kq, I'm glad Emma likes the CDs. I would've liked to do something more elaborate and special, but I just didn't have the time. I did read that thread and I was so happy that I could at least send something I knew y'all didn't have and wanted.

Just a quick pass around here: yes, the gift has been sent. [Smile] From Romania instead of France, but I hope it arrives ok. Happy holidays to all of you!

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Mrs. M, I think they are going to be Emma's favorite present this year, so don't worry about it! She really, really enjoys them. Don't feel bad, she's not old enough to care whether you made it yourself!
