I am having a problem fixing a friend's scanner/printer/etc. because the screen keeps telling me that there is a carriage jam. Which part of the printer is the carriage?

I think it's the part that the ink cartridges sit in, but I'm not sure, and not the one to ask.

The carriage is the thing that holds the cartridge and goes back and forth. I suggest you google for help. Alternatively you could open up the printer and see if there is any obvious reason why the carriage might be stuck in its off position or even half way across.

But all that jargon is killing me.

Well, does that person's problem sound like your problem?
Do you have the means to take the case apart as described in the second post?
It sounds like your carriage, like the person's, might have "come off its rails."
quote:Getting back to mine, I followed your instructions, Bert, and disassembled the printer. After some inspection, I noticed that the cartridge guide (black piece extending to the rear above the cart) was out of its track.
But I know as little about this as you and it sounds like the person had problems with their printer following the dissassembling of the printer. It's up to you if you want to attempt a rescue operation on your friend's printer.
What happens when you open the printer as if you would change the cartridge? On my printer, the cartridge slides across- does that usually happen on yours? Is it happening now? If not what is happening? What do you think could cause the behavior you are seeing? (Is it moving, but jerkily, for example.)

The carriage is moving without a problem, I am so baffled at the situation because the screws are hard to find and that makes it harder to take apart.

Hm. The carriage is moving without a problem makes it sound like it's not the carriage that is a problem. It's possible the encoder strip (the plastic thing they keep talking about) is somehow damaged. I don't know, but it sounds like you can see this strip without taking apart the printer. Can you? Does it look intact?

I gave up on it. I tried dismantling the carriage but it stopped moving altogether. After a few moves here and there I made sure it ended up just the way I got it.
