The time has come for me to break down and get a web hosting service. I have three hundred pictures and small video that need to be shared, and I can't keep mooching off the more organized. So, this, basic site it is. No forum, but I'll probably use Gallery software for the pictures.
It would be good if I could update the site without FTPing, because I cannot use FTP with the firewall at work, and that is my main computer. Otherwise, I will only be able to update the site about once a month.
Does anyone have a web hosting service they love?

I don't really need free space. In fact, I'd rather not use someone else's web space, because I'd then be at their mercy if ever decided to stop sharing or stop paying for space.

I like http://1and1.com , though they're also a very large host, which makes them sort of impersonal. I believe they also have a web interface for files (I have hosting with them, though I rarely mess with it; I think I recall seeing such an interface).
I know the husband/wife team that owns http://suso.org , they're very good (and local to me).
Your best bet in access, since web interfaces are clunky as heck, is likely sftp. It runs over a completely different port, and though it behaves about the same from a user perspective, is really a completely different protocol. Most firewalls will allow sftp (all sorts of ssh, really) traffic through because it is highly secure. There are several sftp clients out there; your ftp client may even have that capability.

I usually use geocities or tripod because they're free, and with a credit card, I can't get my domain. I just recently designed the layout for my new personal site, but I don't think Pick Me is a good spot to go looking for a host, seeing the site is pro-LDS.

My brother: www.reynols.com Except he is serving it from his home DSL line (which is kinda slow, but it is what I use for my site). He often forgets to bill his customers...
Or godaddy.com. I haven't actually used them for web hosting, just dns. Suppose to be really cheap, something like $4 or $5 a month.

Or you could go with http://www.webboulevard.com/. They (Scott Allen) does all of OSC's hosting. $240 a year though. Pretty expensive for what you want I think.

I'm using iPowerWeb and have been pleasantly surprised by them so far. They actually have real people answering their phones, and don't charge overmuch. They're also rated #1 in the country for connectivity and speed at the moment.
icdsoft.com $65/year including domain name registration for a 500MB account and fast, excellent customer service and tech support. They even helped me troubleshoot third party software.

I also use 1and1 for my site. They do have a web interface for uploading files, but in my experience it's much slower than FTP.

I use ICDSoft as well, and apart from some occasional mailing list issues (that I'm not sure are their fault) I've been very pleased. When I signed up it was 333MB, but earlier this year they bumped the storage space and bandwidth without increasing the price. Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

Hmm. ICDSoft looks very good. I've been looking at services that are around that much a month ($5-6) but don't offer MySQL.
Is there anyway to roughly figure out how much bandwidth I might need? I average 200-500 non-graphic intensive page loads a day on my blog. I would also want to add a low-traffic personal site and a protected family-photo site -- running on either Drupal or WordPress.

I am installing the Gallery for the pictures right now, and had some questions. I sent an e-mail asking them, and it was answered fully, more than fully, in about 90 seconds. I am incredibly impressed.
I have to applaud them. Very nice. *thrilled* The pictures should be up by the end of the day.
