A friend of mine is asking for one of two very particular sets of lego and a quick google search looked like one came out in the late 80s and the other only in 2002. However, from skimming department store websites, it seems like neither of these are being sold new anymore. Is it possible to buy this kind of thing new, or does one have to look at e-bay or similar such places?

Don't you just hate pain in the neck friends and their pain in the neck gift requests?
Give him a gift certificate and tell him to find them himself.
(I'm assuming the pain in the neck is a man)

Which sets?

Yeah, which sets? If they are old sets you will have to check Ebay, there's nowhere to buy them new at.

I _really_ thought this was a dobie when I first clicked on it... Posted by human_2.0 (Member # 6006) on :
Lego does resurrect a few old sets every now and then. Only like 2 or 3 though. You'll just have to search:
If not there, you have to ebay it. Also, the adult lego community is pretty huge. You can get scans of instructions for nearly ever set. And you can buy any part you want, but you would have to search around.

the fact that your friend specificly asked for 2 certain sets, and that one is a really old one makes me really interested to know which ones they are now.

The sets are #6285-1: Black Seas Barracuda or #10040-1: Black Seas Barracuda.

There are lego gurus?
Posted by krynn (Member # 524) on :
of course. if u are ever curious about legfo gurus, just look up some custom lego models. there are people who have designed whole catalogs from their own imagination. for example, www.saber-scorpian.com Posted by human_2.0 (Member # 6006) on :
AFOL gained TLG's (The LEGO Group) attention recently when Lego changed the color of skin from yellow to peach and changed the grey color to a light bluish grey. AFOL's didn't like the change, and were able to get TLG to conceed somewhat (not fully). And AFOL have also gotten TLG to target them to some extent with models this: http://shop.lego.com/product.asp?p=4886
Technically, I don't know that there are Lego gurus, but there are Lego Ambassadors (offically recognised by TLG).
