My 75 year old home is nestled comfortably between several ancient oaks.

They grow the largest acorns I have ever seen. They are usually over an inch long and 1/2 inch round.

For the past month plus, they have been falling from those beautiful trees, onto my roof, then not-so-gently bouncing their way to the ground.

They do not do so quietly.

About once or twice an hour I am startled with a loud BANG, followed by followup chatter.

This happens day or night. It is fun to be awakened at night by the shot of an angry acorn pelting your roof.

I just don't remember them being so noisy or so long in their falling in previous years.

My dogs, who spend much of their day out in the backyard under the trees, have taken to hiding under the porch to nap.

Sounds like you need to put on a hard hat and go out and shake those trees to knock their acorns loose! [Big Grin]

My parents' house has the same issue - they have acorns, hickory nuts, and walnuts bombarding them this time of year.

They usually park one of the cars next to the house, but my mom always moves it when it gets windy for fear of nuts, branches, or the whole tree falling on it. (The latter of which has never happened, thus her concern amuses me.)
