That is the most off topic and vague and confusing phrase I have ever heard.

Actually, I think it might just run a close second to your opening post. Well, except the off-topic part. [Smile]

If you have specific problems, that's one thing, but you're asking for such vague things, it would be impossible to answer your question in any really helpful way.

Check out the wikipedia article on linux, it has a decent general overview of linux. Also, the source code can be found at kernel.org. That's pretty much all I can say to such a vague request. However, if you have any specific questions feel free to ask.

O.K. I thought about it and have thought of a better reply to your initial post. The best thing you can do to learn about linux is to use it as your only operating system and stick to it.

I'm not going to get into the whole which flavor of linux is better than any other flavor because those arguments are pretty lame to me. Just realize that people are passionate about certain distributions, and that certain distros use slightly different commands to get the job done than other distros. Here's a link to a site with an overview of all the distributions and a ranking of what happens to be most popular for any given week.

Whatever distribution you get, their website will almost certainly have a getting started faq or something, and forums where people can ask questions.

Internet connection with linux is key, so you can access google. Until you get your linux set up, have access to another os with an internet connection so you can get the kinks worked out in setting up a connection with the linux box. Once that's set up, don't use the other os at all unless it's an emergency.

Good luck.

What sort of class is it exactly? When you said it was an operating systems class, I took it to mean a programming course. If it is, though, I can't see why you would need that much information on things such as history. So like I said, what sort of class is it?

ok, i didn't think i was ok, when I have a more specific question I'll ask, as for wiki i'll check it out.

Oh, and my first reply should be recognizable for fans of a certain website.
