It smells like it did a few weeks ago when this was going on. (That's right near our exit the fire started at, btw; you can see a burned patch half a mile from our exit when you get on the freeway, which is about 5 blocks down the street from our apartment. The freeway was closed two exits down from our exit either way, and it took my husband almost an hour to get home instead of his usual 15 minutes even though the UPS guy tipped him off and he left work early that day.)

kq, did you ever find out what it was about? I worry about smelling fire from an unspecified source ever since my mom smelled something burning for several hours once and finally called the fire department, who, when they arrived discovered and extinguished an electric blanket fire downstairs that had just begun to flame up. Had she waited to call them the house probably would have burned down.

Are you positive it's coming from outside the house? Did you smell the air outside to be sure? Have you checked all the rooms and sniffed to be sure the smell is not stronger in one place than another?

It went away around 1:30 and didn't come back, and nothing was on the news.

Maybe someone was having a fireplace fire down the street, it's been chilly lately. If they burned chemically-treated wood and maybe some brush for kindling, it might smell like that.
