I knew you said you were a ham, but I didn't want to "out" you if you didn't want it known here.
My husband is also a ham. All we have right now as far as equipment goes is a little 5 watt walkie. We've ordered a mobile, power supply, and antennas. They should be here at the end of the week. Then we'll hook them up and see just how far we can talk. Posted by Boon (Member # 4646) on :

Yeah, I started from ARRL, but I think I did the same steps. Trouble is, much of the FCC site is down for routine maintenance for the weekend.

Do you buy your tongues already cooked and sliced, or do you buy the whole raw tongue and cook it up yourself?

I've done it both ways. I love to make sweet and sour tongue, with almonds and raisins. Trouble is, I have to get a tongue bigger than the actual size of what I need . . . because I will nibble on it as I trim and slice it up.

Seriously... I have attempted to eat tongue exactly once in my life and I was so traumatized that I will never ever ever ever attempt that again.
My sister, two of my cousins and I were all staying at my grandmother's house for the night. I think I was about 6 at the time. Grandma made cow's tongue and spinach salad (another icky mess that I eventually overcame many many years later). I assume at this late date that Grandma simply didn't know what she was doing in cooking it, but it was rubbery, had a nasty taste, and... um... certain parts of the organ were still attached. John (a year younger than me) took one bite and ran from the table to the bathroom. Jim (his brother and one year older than me) tried to give some to Sam the dog - who loved table scraps - and even he wouldn't touch it! I remember trying to struggle through it and being largely unsuccessful.

Tongue is the tastiest part of the cow there is. No joke. Very very yumptious.
So tender. So flavorful. So moist. So tangy-licious. So full of ooey-gooey cholesterol (which, as we all know, is that secret substance that makes all foods taste good)

Boon, I don't leg-pull when discussing food. Except for those who have a Tongue-Related Trauma (like Goody, and at least one other person I know), tongue is one of the best cuts of meat there is. Just be sure to peel the tongue -- the outer layer is tough, rough, and not terribly yummy. But it peels off very easily once the tongue has been cooked.
I don't think I'll make tongue this week, but maybe after we move . . . *drools*

Reason to love hatrack #29: Thread diversions. Yes, it happens on other boards too, but generally, not into discussions about tongues.
Now, back to the topic at hand . . .
. . . I've only eaten tongue once--does anyone else have trouble spelling "tongue"? I always want to spell it "tounge"--at the insistance of my nutty neighbor Polly, who's just the type of person to say "here, eat this" without telling me what it is. IIRC, it was quite tasty, but I can't really remember since it was a while back. I don't have the best memory. Rivka's sweet-and-sour tongue recipe sounds pretty darn yummalicious to me, so I gotta try it sometime--I like trying new foods. Speaking of new foods, I tried a lot of them while in France, but I'm back now. I'll post a recap/picture thread in a few days but right now I'm very busy, plus I get easily distra-- Oh Look! Tongue is off-putting, because so many people picture it in in its original state. And even I must admit that raw tongue isn't so attractive. But once it is cooked and sliced, wonderful things start to happen. At it's happiest, the tongue will find its way into a tasty sandwich.
I don't have a picture for you, but let me assure you that my cooked and sliced tongue looks ever so much yummier than the one I linked to. Hard to find the right tongue photo, no? I mostly got pictures like this.
What delicious food do you adore that other people turn their noses up at without giving it a chance?
