[Frown]

Boruch Dayan haEmes. (Blessed be the True Judge)

He's in Israel, but wanted to be buried in Los Angeles (where my grandmother is buried). And since my parents are in Munich this week (just got in today, and were supposed to be heading back to London to pack up and return to L.A. next Sunday), that makes me the local contact person.

So I just got to approve stuff and make decisions on behalf of everyone, while my parents scramble to book flights and get back here . . .

[Cry]

I'm deeply sorry for your grandfather's death. I hope he had a good, long, healthy life which he shared with the people he loved.

I'm remember when my Grandpa died. I was around 14. I felt what you feel. I offer you my shoulder to support you and continue your walk, rivka. May he fly in a beautiful place.

He was 90. He died with a book in his lap. *tearful smile*

And now he is with my grandmother again -- she died 20 years ago, and I know he has missed her a lot.

Thanks for all the hugs.

To all of you: thank you. It means a lot.

Plane tickets have been straightened out, for my parents at least. The funeral will be Wednesday.

Which means this place has to be neatened up by then. I was supposed to have another week! *panics*

המקום ינחם אתכם בין שאר אבלי ציון וירושלים. (God shall give you conldolence amongst the rest of Zion's and Jerusalem's mourners.)

(((Rivka & Family))), I can't offer you many words, even at this hard time for me. Let's put it this way: I'd be "Avel" if you had no-one to say it for him.

May his soul rest in peace,
Jonathan

Rivka, I am sorry for your loss... and the family should be glad to have someone of your strength around to handle things. Make sure that you take time for yourself to grieve, though.

Rivka, I am so very, very sorry.

Losing my grandfather was a very difficult thing for me, and I know you must be dealing with great sorrow right now.

I hope the fact that this community loves you and is keeping you in thoughts and prayers is of some comfort.

I love you guys.

I found a picture of my grandfather online. It's about 60 years old, but it's actually remarkable how much like that he looked until a very few years ago (well, except I don't remember when his hair was black). He's the first guy on the left.

Thank you, Sara.

Yes, the funeral is in a couple hours, and the living room is full of out-of-town family. We'll all be heading over in an hour or so.

I'm sorry for your loss Rivka.

I hope it is not insensitive to ask this, but I have heard that Jewish law requires that the body be buried within 24 hours of death. Clearly, this is not possible if your grandfather died in Israel and is to be buried in LA. What accomodations does the law make in these circumstances?

Posted by The Rabbit (Member # 671) on :

So from the picture, I gather that your Grandfather worked with Seaborg and Thompson. Cool. What a wonderful legacy.

It's fine, Rabbit. [Smile] Jewish law does not require the body to be buried within a certain number of hours. What it requires is for the body to be buried as soon as possible, preferably before nightfall of that day. This is because of kavod hameis (the honor of the deceased) and also because we believe that it frees the soul of the departed to ascend to the World to Come. (In Israel, there is an additional concern about kavod ha'aretz, the honor of the land. Therefore funerals are almost never delayed among Orthodox Jews in Israel.)

However, sometimes there are other concerns that also hinge upon kavod hameis -- such as honoring the wishes of the deceased, or waiting until relatives are able to arrive. There was actually some (slight) debate among family members, but in the end it was decided that his wish to be buried next to his wife and the fact that my mother would not be able to get here before Tuesday night superseded other concerns.

He certainly did. Seaborg recruited him for the Manhattan Project (stage 2), and then after the war he continued on at Argonne until he retired in the late 70s.
