It was about a boy who got sick - don't remember the illness. While all the doctors said it was terminal, his parents weren't ready to give up and so they started doing research on their own. They had some help from a retired biologist (IIRC) and in the end I think they found a cure. I'm not sure wether the boy survived or not. And I have a feeling it was based on a true story. And also I don't remember any of the actors who played in it...

So, any candidates?
