From Washington Post

quote:
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, June 28 -- Pakistan's Supreme Court agreed Tuesday to open a new inquiry into the case of Mukhtar Mai, a woman who was gang-raped three years ago on the orders of a village tribal council.

The court decision overturned a lower court judgment in March that threw out the convictions of five of the men accused of involvement in the rape and commuted the death sentence of a sixth. The Supreme Court also ordered the detention of the men, along with eight others originally charged in the case.

May she obtain real justice in this case.

For those interested in reductio ad absurdum arguments, this case is one of the reasons why I think local rule (based on local moral standards) is not such a good idea.

I saw this - it seems like good news.

This is the part I just can't wrap my mind around:

quote:
The tribal council allegedly ordered the gang rape in June 2002 to settle a score with Mai's teenage brother, who had been accused of an improper relationship with the sister of one of the men subsequently charged.
This is how they punish the brother? Consensual sex punished by gang rape of a third party?

I'm glad they reopened the case.

I have read and heard online and on NPR that this might not be an indicator of improved Pakistani 'justice'-that Mushareff (sp?) has been upset by the negative publicity Pakistan has been getting, and so has taken this course of action.

He IS the man who wouldn't permit her to leave Pakistan before, because she would travel around 'badmouthing Pakistan'.
