Hello:)

At work, we're not allowed to install anything ourselves. We have to have the systems people do it. It's annoying, but hey... that's what you've gotta live with.

This morning, I asked the tech to install winamp on my computer. I'd been having to use realplayer, and it routinely crashes when I try to exit it (ironically)...and it's really just a pain. I prefer winamp.

Right before I asked him to install it, I had found a cool fantasy picture wallpaper and put it up.

He chose the full/loaded edition of winamp and installed it. I generally hate that--it's just more bloated software.

So, I try to run it, and it pops up a media library and has an error initializing the database. I don't know what that means--but I don't want the media library anyway. Unfortunately, there's no preference to stop it from popping up each time.

So, I load the mp3s from the CD I brought from home. Each time, it plays a little while and then crashes. I tried playing directly from the CD and then I copied the entire CD over to the harddrive. Both crashed anyway.

At one point, firefox even crashed. That has NEVER happened before.

Also, every time I open firefox now, it's asking me if I want firefox to be my default browser. I click yes, but EVERY time, it asks again. Some other browser is hijacking my default browser setting. Grr!

So, I asked the tech to come back and uninstall winamp and reinstall the barebones, smaller no-frills version. He's in training today, but will come back to do that Monday.

Also, winamp is running VERY slow, which is odd for this computer. And another thing... winamp just recently came out with this new version, so I'm not surprised it has bugs.

So my question is... has anyone else here had similar problems with winamp and firefox? Is it possible, though, that somehow there could be a virus in the wallpaper? *shrugs* I dunno... but it's frustrating.

Oh... also... is there an extension or plug in for firefox that works like winamp? I just want something that will play mp3's, have a random play option, and generally leave me alone.

Lucky you work where you do. As a tech, if a user asks me "please install winamp" I would be required to say "Is it essential for your work? If this is not work related, then I am not installing it."

Well, I'm not complaining. I work in a library. In the back. My music is soft enough so that others can't really hear it. (I've asked several times just to make sure.)

When he was setting up my computer, he offered me instant messaging. Some people use it here for communication, I guess. I said no thanks. (Hatrack is enough of a distraction!)

Email is used among my immediate coworkers, anyway.

How odd. I just fixed a Winamp-related problem for a user and showed them how to use our corporate IM client. You don't work at a small Catholic college, do you? [Smile]

heh.. no.. [Smile] a moderately sized public college in georgia.

I wish exceptions could be made to the rule saying we can't install things on our computers. It all started because people were installing screensavers with viruses. But I don't do that.

Sigh.
