I've had quite a few comments on the little bit of verse in my signature line at the Serenity movie site. Finally decided that sleep wasn't all that important and wrote out the whole song. See what you think.

(Edited to update to the latest version and add writing credit)

The Ballad of Firefly
(to the tune of 'The Ballad of Serenity' by Joss Whedon)
by C. A. Bridges and Shmuel Ross

Brand new show, worth a glance
Thought I’d give this one a chance
Now I’m stuck here helplessly
You can’t take my show from me.

Pilots, thugs, crazy girl
Browncoats fighting for their world.
Western sci-fi fantasy
You can’t take my show from me.

Nothing left on TV since you took Serenity
But you can’t take my show from me.

Captain Mal, Shepherd Book
Both have ethics, one’s a crook
The other one’s a mystery
You can’t take my show from me.

Zoe fights fierce by gosh
The question’s why she married Wash.
He knows all the steps, you see
You can’t take my show from me.

Nothing left on TV since you took Serenity
But you can’t take my show from me.

Need a thug, Jayne does that
Muscles, guns, and cunning hat
Just don’t trust his loyalty
You can’t take my show from me.

Kaylee Frye, engineer
Keeps the ship up in the air
With her cheerful energy
You can’t take my show from me

Nothing left on TV since you took Serenity
But you can’t take my show from me.

Simon Tam, he’s got meds
Saved his sister from the feds
Now he fights to keep her free
You can’t take my show from me.

River’s not always there
Takes her nightmares everywhere
Hers have tangibility
You can’t take my show from me

Nothing left on TV since you took Serenity
But you can’t take my show from me.

If you’ve money, fame and pluck
Ask Inara for a session
Sweet Companion ecstasy
You can’t take my show from me.

Bound by fate, doomed to flee
They’re a close-knit family
Bickering and banditry
You can’t take my show from me

Nothing left on TV since you took Serenity
But you can’t take my show from me.

Then the crew found firsthand
‘Gainst one thing they could not stand
Network folks’ stupidity
You can’t take my show from me.

Went to watch thieves and whores
All I found were high school scores
Pre-empted to a sad degree
You can’t take my show from me.

Nothing left on TV since you took Serenity
But you can’t take my show from me.

Take our slot, take our cast
Run them all mixed-up, half-assed
I don't care, there's DVD
You can't take my show from me.

Put the shows on the shelf
I’ll write fanfic for myself.
It’s my gorram reality
You can’t take my show from me.

Nothing left on TV since you took Serenity
But you can’t take my show from me.

Went online, joined the war
We’re too mighty to ignore
Browncoats everywhere agree
You can’t take my show from me.

Bought the shows, spread the word
Big damn movie deal’s assured
Now we want a trilogy
You can’t take my show from me.

Nothing left on TV since you took Serenity
But you can’t take my show from me.

Oh, my! That's great! Thanks for sharing those. Now if only the Firefly tune was something that I could actually sing.

Looks great! My only complaint is that you only mention the Companion as a whore, and River as a crazy girl without mentioning their names or even giving them an entire line to themselves. But then you had to fit a lot in there.

<trivia> The actress who plays Kaylee also plays the bartender's wife, Heidi, in the cancelled FOX series Wonderfalls.</trivia>

I know, that really took some getting used to when I watched the Firefly DVDs. She played such a <insert crude word here> on Wonderfalls, and then such a sweetheart on Firefly.

I found Heidi-Ho a sympathetic character in the end. She just wanted her husband back. (And who wouldn't? Eric is KYUUUUUUUUUUUTE.) Yeah, she lost him in a totally stupid way...

Great filk Chris =) When can we expect more?

(I love the fact there are so many Browncoats here =)

Don't forget Tim's new show starts a week from tonight (on June 8). Adam Baldwin (Jayne) and Katie Finneran (Sharon from Wonderfalls) will be in it.

what's the name of the new show? I don't want to miss it like I've totally missed Wonderfalls and Firefly.

"The Inside."

Gah! I can't believe I forgot to mention the name of the show. I was sure I had. Sorry guys, Chris is right, it's "The Inside"

Posted by Stray (Member # 4056) on :

And is it on Fox, or some other network?

Posted by Taalcon (Member # 839) on :

Fox, which is usually anathema for Tim Minear shows.

As of this past weekend, I finally know what the crap all you Firefly people have been talking about. And I've joined the crusade. [Smile]

And Chris, that is priceless.

Posted by The Pixiest (Member # 1863) on :

Yes, it's on Focks, but it's NOT in the Death Slot! It's Wednesday at 9.

I know Firefly was in the Death Slot and I believe Wonderfalls was too.

Left out the hot little wife/ship thief. God what a great show!

In Gilligan's Island's first season, the song ended "the movie star...
and all the rest."

Leaving "the Professor and MaryAnn to be added in later seasons.

The millionaire's wife was never anything but the millionaire's wife.

And at that, most of them were named only by their role.

*tear*

That was awesome, Chris. [Smile]

Already planning on adding more verses for characters. This was a late night wild-hair idea, aided and abetted by Shmuel who kept my scansion (reasonably) honest.

I started a CafePress store for Serenity stuff (www.cafepress.com/bigredbutton)and someone at the movie site asked if I could put my sig on a shirt (it was the single verse starting with "Take my slot"). Instead I decided to write the whole thing and make a poster [Smile]

OK, as reluctant as I was to like any show written by Josh Whedon, after seeing my first episode of Firefly today I have to say I really enjoyed it.

Nearly completely lacking the general corniness of Buffy and Angel it impressed me alot.

Awesome ballad, Chris!

I still need to watch the DVD. I'm putting it on my b-day "wish list". [Wink]

I think that shows that the corniness of those two shows was deliberate and not a failing of Joss.

OK, as reluctant as I am to like any post written by jebus, after seeing his first serious post in a while I have to say I really enjoyed it.

Nearly completely lacking the general rudeness of his other posts, it impressed me a lot.

(although sometimes he's spot on with his humor and it's a hilarious result)

Well it is and isn't.

I don't enjoy all the corniness of Buffy and Angel, so I think it's a failing of his for adding them in. Just because he's able to write dialogue without it doesn't really change anything

Oh and thanks JNSB for the uh, compliment. Always good to know that some people sometimes don't think I'm a troll.

*bump* because of my alarming find on Cafe Press....that's no longer alarming.

I'm also bumping it because I finally get it. [Smile] It's nice to have seen the show, I'm in the club.

Since you brought it up, I edited to update to the latest veriosn of the song.

And I love The Ballad of Joss. The group that does it, the Bedlam Bards, is planning an entire Firefly/Serenity-related CD in November.

While I'm tossing in stuff, here's the River picture I finally finished last night.

Three guesses what I'm writing about in my column this week...

Great song, I loved it.

"If you’ve money, fame and pluck
Ask Inara for a session
Sweet Companion ecstasy
You can’t take my show from me."

I just don't see how the first two lines rhyme, though.

Please, please tell me you've sent this to Joss. He must see it.

Jaime, there is something that rhymes with "pluck" and would fit in well given Inara's profession, but the word is rather inappropriate and some people probably wouldn't appricaite it being posted.

A cheer I remember from grade school:

Rah, rah, ree!
Kick 'em in the knee!
Rah, rah, rass!
Kick 'em in the other knee!

xtownaga, there is something that rhymes with "larcasm" and is often employed with false innocence to draw attention to, or show appreciation for, a naughty joke. [Razz]
