On the Lyrics thread, Hiroshima pointed out to me, a Springsteen fan probably since before his birth, that "Candy's Room" was not on the new album, that it was "ancient."
Um, ancient? I still think of "Darkness on the Edge of Town" as a new album, and "The River?" Forget it, that album is so new I don't even know all the words yet.
So, it rankled that I was accused of not knowing that "Candy's Room" is not on an album put out in 2005, over twenty years later.
Then I thought to myself, OK Self, what exactly is rankling to you? Is it the fact that he thinks you don't know your own Boss, or the fact that he thinks a song from your youth is "ancient?"
But holy moly. My twentieth college reunion is next weekend.
I am ancient! Isn't a car comsidered antique after twenty years? So the car that I drove in high school, a 1967 Dodge Polara with questionable brakes, is probably worth money now, rather than strange looks from my new car-owning high school classmates.

Ancient is a state of mind.
Do any of us ever stop being surprised at our age once we get past 23 or so? I'm 31, and I know that's not old; heck, that's still young. But everytime I tell people my son is 10 I still get a shock, like, "Crap! When did I get old enough to have a 10-year-old!" My older sister will turn 40 in a few years and I just can't even begin to wrap my mind around that one.

*grins* I'm falling into the, "when the heck did I turn 31?" category myself.
And while hardly ancient, you've had a good life with a lot more to look forward to and that puts you ahead of most.

My eldest cousin is about twenty years older than I am. We're friends, and in the same generation - nevermind that I'm closer to her kids' ages than to hers. To my mind she is young, and I am definitely younger than she is so I'll always be young my wacky mind at work..
I don't think much about people's ages here. I kinda have a feel for who's older or younger than I am, but it really doesn't matter. I figure we're all peers.

Whenever I feel old I just remember that one of my best friends is almost 60 and he's very active and full of life. Heck, the "biker chick" across the street is pushing 87 and if I'm as spry as she is now when I'm 60 I'll be happy.

A car is an antique after 25 years, not 20, but close enough.
My cousin's son graduated from high school last weekend, everyone at the party was sure I was younger than him, kinda funny situation.

Has everyone ever seen/heard of Cheryl Wheeler? She is a folk singer who happens to be one of the funniest comedians out there. She does this bit about aging, and how it used to be that it took forever for Christmas to come, then you'd wait eons for your birthday, but now(she is about fifty) it comes together so fast.
"And I think of my father. I mean, for him, it must be like this: ChristmasBirthdayEasterChristmasBirthdayEaster.
And it kind of is!

20-year high school reunions are nothing to worry about, or make you feel old. Heck, I went to one when I was 22. 22 isn't old! It was a lot of fun.

Or at least, it seems that way. but it's been *mumble* years since then. Soon I'll be 40. Soon I'll be dead.
When I young.. even in my early 20s... a year was an inconceivably long time. Now another one is gone everytime I turn around.
I don't feel old when I'm not thinking about it. I sure don't LOOK old (I got carded buying LIQUID PAPER the other day!) In all my hobbies I'm surrounded by high school and college kids.
I think I'm going to turn around one day soon and my face is going to be a roadmap of wrinkles and all my hair will suddenly go white. Some kid I'm grouped with in whatever MMORPG is popular at the time will call me "Granma"... Then I'll lose it.
I like all the life experience and knowlege that comes from being older... But the getting old part is for the birds.
Gotta change my nick cuz I'm too old to be The Pixiest...

As I age, the distance between decades shrinks. I think of the time between 0 and ten. That took forever!
I remember a teacher saying to my eighth grade boyfriend, when he turned fourteen:
