BBC story

We heard this on the BBC news on the way in to work this morning, and my mom is indignant that they keep talking about it. "If it's so humiliating, why do they keep publicizing it?"

I try not to argue politics with my mom, but was trying to argue that those who permit things like this don't get punished unless there's public recognition. To me, the outrage isn't that the photos are being printed in the papers, but that they were taken at all.

What do you think?

Oh, also:

quote:
"It's important that the people of Iraq see him like that to destroy the myth," the paper's source was quoted as saying.

However, several Arab commentators have suggested the photos could increase anti-American feeling in the region.

Uh... ya think?

Remember how everyone thought video of Saddam after the initial assault might be a doppelganger? One has to wonder...

Anyway, it is really unfortunate that this comes on the heels of the Quran/Toilet thing. It may garner sympathy for Saddam among Muslims who didn't know him. I hope it is noted that this was a British publication.

It's the latest fad for world leaders.

Check it out, even Bush is getting into the act:

The reports I read talked like Saddam has a survellience camera trained on him at all times (for security reasons) and that possibly these images were lifted off of that survellience video by someone without permission.

As usual, I'm in the minority here, but I thought it was hilarious. The man is an evil tyrant and mass murderer. I think a few shots of him in his knickers should bring him down a peg or two. And excuse me, but WHY would the muslims be up in arm about it? They didn't want him in charge, and they were glad to be rid of him. If the only people who are pissed are his supporters, then OH WELL. Boo-effing-hoo. All these hoi-palloi who are getting their knickers in a knot are doing it because they think that's what expected. I can guarantee you they're making tidy-whitey jokes too.

Really, there are other things in the news that I plan to pay attention to. Saddam in his grampa-panties is not at the top of my list.

And for the record, I do agree that they shouldn't have been taken, nor should they have been released, but what's DONE is DONE. If everyone weren't having litters of kittens about it, it'd already be a non event.

Well, maybe if it were the first time American soldiers had defied the Geneva Convention, it wouldn't be a big deal.

I wonder if public outcry would be the same if he was wearing boxers instead of briefs.

I do wonder if some of the same people in the middle east who think it is terrible that Saddam was shown in his underwear think it is perfectly fine that insurgents beheaded innocent civilians.

That being said, while I don't think it is the end of the world...I do think that it is tacky, and should have been prevented. If they catch the person who leaked the photos, they should be punished...but not court martialed or anything to that extreme.

I do think anyone with access to prisoners needs to take a class on what is and is not acceptable treatment of POWs. They should also have to pass a test on what the Geneva convention says about treatment of prisoners.

Wow. This'll strengthen the fledgling democracy and promote cooperation with US troops...

It's hard to take the moral high ground when you're demeaning your enemy.

I was just about to comment on the quote that jebus used.

(It's from Bush).

Just - *gack*

And people wonder why some parts of the world get all upset.

Indeed...
That remark just seems so... short-sighted.
