Limes were on sale, so we picked up a dollar's worth, juiced the heck out of them, added an equal amount of sugar, added some store-brand club soda, cleaned up the mess from where I got too enthusiastic in my pouring and let it fizz over, and added a drop of green for coolness.

It is so refreshing on a hot night like tonight. I don't know why I ever thought Sonic's limeade was good. I guess it had been too long since I made my own. [Big Grin]

Most excellent!

And I imagine you can imagine why I would like to plant my own lime tree, eh?

Lime juice is also really good in a lot of different types of curries. [Big Grin]

Oh, yes. And it's also excellent squeezed on grilled beef. And in salsa. And useful in many desserts. And... [Big Grin]

I like Meyers lemons a whole awful lot, too, for many of the same things.

I like limeade concentrate. With a spoon, at the kitchen table, reading a good book.

I put the juice of three limes into our salad today. With peppers, fried mushrooms, garlic, spring onions, and cilantro. Yum!

When fresh limes are not cheap, in good shape, or you just want to buy some, Paul Newmans' limeade is my favorite.
Especially with, well, vodka and a smashing of mint for my summer cocktail.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

And that would be the reason I want to grow mint. [Big Grin] Well, except the vodka part. I'll just ignore that...

Mmmm, cold sugared decoction of mint, with a splash of lime...

I'll add some balance to this thread by saying that Elizabeth's suggestion sounds fantastic. I'll have to get some mint. I already have the vodka and the limes :D.

I love limes. Limes in guacamole. Limes marinating a buffalo steak. Limes is sugary drinks with umbrellas.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Yes, limes as marinade for chicken, or anything, is so good.

I wonder if you could make kumquatade.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Yes, Annie, you can! It works better if you have an electric juicer, though, or you get tired squeezing all those tiny fruits. You also need to use about twice as much sugar. It's seriously yummy, though. [Big Grin]

OK, here's a question for the spanglophones:

What the heck does limón really mean? I started calling limes limónes in Mexico because everywhere I saw them for sale that's what they were called, but one of the girls who spoke better Spanish than me insisted that limón is lemon and lima is lime. So, do Mexicans just call limes lemons, or are their lemons really small and green?

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

I was taught limón is both lemon and lime. [Dont Know]

Mmmm. Avocadoes. I can't believe I didn't think about growing avocadoes. [Wall Bash]

I don't have a juicer. I juice by hand with a large spoon, and I've gotten quite good at it. [Big Grin] I can de-juice a lime in about five or ten seconds.

Grr. I gave away my cheap plastic juicer to a friend who was juicerless, thinking I could get another one. I got a fancier Farberware one and it is useless. (or juiceless)

Quid, if you want avocados, make sure you have either a male and female tree, or a grafted tree with a male branch on a female tree. Otherwise you won't get any fruit. [Smile]

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Um, thanks for the tip. I mean, honestly. Cuz I'd have to idea at all.

Now. How the *heck* do I tell the difference between the two? And then, how the *heck* do I tell a female seed from a male seed?

I had full intentions of taking the pit of the next avocado we eat and growing the thing. You mean there's a trick?

I have no clue. This is just what I was told by friends who have avocados...

Google is saying that trees will have both phases and overlap. [Dont Know] So according to that, one tree should be fine. But I've known lots of people with only one tree who never get avocados, and then their neighbor plants a tree, and they get lots (or vice versa).

I will tell you that we tried for years and years and had no success sprouting and growing avocado seeds. We finally gave up. My dad's friend did the same, but ended up getting a tree from a nursery.

They sprout just fine; they just don't seem to grow into trees very well. [Dont Know]

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

So maybe I should grow two avocado plants.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Yes. Maybe the sprouting will work better for you than it ever did for me; for some reason, ours would either mold, or sprout, then mold. [Frown]

The time from seed to fruiting under good growing conditions is about a decade.

Tonight's drink of the night, btw, was agua de sandia. Yummy!

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

But I found another source that said that you can get fruit within months if you buy a small tree rather than growing from seed. Gotta read some more.

What's agua de sandia?

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

It's watermelon juice. Kinda. [Big Grin]

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Oooooh! I love watermelon juice. The best we can get here is at Deli-France, the little deli at Odel's, the foreigner's department store. It's wonderful!

Although this is not a healthy or natural juice, this thread reminded me of my childhood and the mixing of Lemon Blend. Does anyone else remember this lemon-flavored syrup that mixed into a very distinct-tasting lemonade???

My parents have a dwarf avocado (along with a dwarf kumquat and a dwarf navel orange) tree in the front yard. It produces fruit quite nicely and has for years.

My mother would remember better, but I think it was only a few years after they planted it that it started producing fruit. OTOH, they bought it from a nursery, so any male/female issues would have already been, um, fixed . . . and it would already have had a couple years' start.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

rivka, as far as I know, most of the avocado trees you get in nurseries are grafts.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Probably so. It makes sense.
