A question mainly for our French comrades -

I'm very interested in the news surrounding the referendum on the European consitution. From Chirac's support, I assumed at first that it was something that the RPR and the right were pushing for, but I also read about Jospin's support and his public address.

In day to day life, which people do you see supporting it? Socialists? The right? Is it divided by political affiliation or by other factors - are there more rich or poor on one side or the other?

I'm just quite curious. Also, what do you think of it personally?

Aaaaaahhh !!!! What a great question you ask !

Firstly, i want to say, read this big text, and i search what may be bad and what may be good.

I saw just some blur points but not dangerous point. And many point are very interesting, for example the idea of a market who must take care of durable development and social politic (oppositelly as some extrem left party said).

To speak about french political parties, In majority the UMP (ex RPR) of Chirac, the PS of Jospin and Hollande, green and the UDF are for the constitution.
Some People of PS like Fabius, some people of UMP (very few), The FN of Le Pen, The Comunist and Trotskist, and some other souverainist like De Villier are against.

I am apolitic, I think i'll vote yes. The most important reason is that the majority of args against are wrong. But these args shoot well because too few people read the text. I read it, so i could verify. This is a strike of influance of political parties

Because of liberalism and the market economy.

What frightens me most is that basically only the extremes are against the constitution... But a lot of people I meet are against it. Not because they read it, mind you. No, just because they are fed up with th governement, fed up to see the same guys ruling again and again, and therefore they want to do something stupid to prove that ultimately the powers is theirs.
I can't say I'm not fed up with this government, but honestly, crush the greatest project we had in years just to annoy them seems a bit exagerated for me.
The other annoying thing is that since it's a very long text, most people don't read it and trust what they read or hear about it. It's not what I would call a knowing vote, right ? And the extremes make up a lot of stupid lies, like that the constitution leads to the interdiction to abort...

I agree with Anna. People don't understand a no let a worst political action (the Nice treaty).
Some people are also afraid about Europ. They are afraid to lose something.

In my opinion we have far more to gain than to lose.
