I'm resigned to the fate of mail order bras. I'm too large for standard bras here, which come in A and B cup sizes. I havent' seen a single bra over a 34B.

Sigh.

Even when I was skinny, my breasts were far larger than that. You know the kind - men look like deer stuck in headlights. [Big Grin] So, to mail order shopping! Onwards and upwards, ho!

Other than Victoria Secret, which has a limited selection in the larger sizes, where else would you suggest buying bras via mail order?

I'm not looking for sexy lingerie, but I'm also not looking for ugly grandma underwear either. Functional and attractive would be nice. [Big Grin]

Suggestions?

JenniK, as I mentioned in teh other thread, loves Layne Bryant.... Here is their web site.

I have no idea what size you are, but JenniK likes their selection, adn she is larger than a DD.....

I'm astonished. There actually IS a topic on which I have no opinion.

Yet ... I was still able to find a reason to speak. The pathology of the compulsive conversationalist knows no bounds.

Kwea, thanks. I'm checking out the website, and yep, they do have larger than DD, which makes me very very happy. And I can even shop by size, so I don't have to waste my time looking at styles that don't have a hope of fitting.

Now if I could only narrow down the selections automatically by eliminating all that aren't underwire...

Yep, Hatrack is alive and well and posting a half dozen replies in the time it takes me to type two sentences and hit reply. [Dont Know]

Lane Bryant's sister catalog is Roaman's. Some overlap in selection, but I generally buy from both (and to a lesser degree from the other catalogs in the family).

The other online place I like to shop for bras is Breakout Bras. I particularly like their search-by-size (see link) function. I imagine they will ship outside the US and Canada, although the free shipping will not apply. [Wink] The website actually belongs to a lingerie store in South Carolina, and you can call or email them to see what shipping costs might be.

They have GREAT customer service (they once arranged to change the shipping address at the last minute at no charge, so I could have the bra in time, even though I was not at home), and I have been very happy with them.

I've had good luck with the Hanes catalogue, don't know if they do online.

The only bras I've bought online are Motherhood brand nursing bras, and I don't think you need those. [Wink]

This recently came up on another forum I'm on; some of the suggestions there were Elle MacPherson Intimates, Berlei, and Decent Exposures.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

The first two of those three don't seem to allow online ordering.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

The boys never do leave, do they? Even when it's totally in their best interest.

I was contemplating starting a thread asking for suggestions regarding re-usable menstrual products, but didn't so much want it accessible on a board that my boyfriend frequents. But even with all the warnings I could stick on it, the boys would still read it! Silly boys.

What makes menstrual products, reusable or otherwise, something of no interest to boys? I predict many of the guys here come in close contact with people regularly using menstrual products, or plan to some day come into such contact, where it would be useful to be acquainted with them.

I'm not easily disgusted, and it always sort of amuses me that we perpetuate these taboos about something being unclean which approximately half the population has undergone/will undergo/is undergoing at regular intervals.

You've obviously never had your period. I think unclean is about the nicest thing you can say about it.

Also, what people some people want to be more private about things like this than others, it's your place to decide that for yourself, not for anyone else.

Unclean in the mental sense, not the physical. Society doesn't act this way about other, much dirtier things.

I've got two sisters and I did ballet for a long time (including being included in many group conversations where I was the only guy), I'm moderately familiar with periods.

Of course people get to decide it for themselves, I'm just saying that the notion guys would or should stay away from discussions about menstrual products seems odd.

Re-usable menstrual products - like the cuppy thing? I saw it on the site sending goods to soldiers that Kayla linked to. Never heard of them before - not sure they're popular here.

Fugu, I completely agree with you. While having my period is not my favourite thing in the world (evidenced by habit for skipping them) I *hate* the societal attitudes that surround them.

And don't even get me started on everyday panty-liners marketed at 14 years olds so you can be fresh every day!

*ugh*

I personally have no issue with Tony knowing I menstruate. He buys tampons and pads for me. And nurofen. And sometimes chocolate.

It's just part of being a woman - and its the part of me that means we will be able to have children someday. Nothing icky about that.

Okay, that was a slight derail. Sorry folks. The Lane Bryant site looks pretty good - might have to do some ordering myself.

Edit: oooh! This one! I have been looking for a low cut bra for *ages*.

*twinkle*

Thanks Hatrack!

It IS icky. It FEELS icky. I feel bloated, crampy, sometimes unable to get up; backaches, headaches, joint aches; general irritability, a tendancy to burst into tears, and best yet, TONS OF BLOOD, INCLUDING PAINFULLY PASSED CLOTS AND MUCOUS, RUNNING DOWN MY LEG WHENEVER I LAY DOWN AND CURL UP IN THE ONLY POSITION THAT'S AT ALL COMFORTABLE! Which, of course, means I get to clean some more. Goody.

How is that not icky and gross?

Posted by imogen (Member # 5485) on :

Ok, it's icky in that it feels icky. (Though nurofen and chocolate do help. [Smile] )

It's not icky in that it's 'unclean' - as in impure, untouchable connetations, unfeminine or unnatural.

It's natural. It's necessary. (Though I did read an interesting SF short story about cyclists and shunts recently... but I digress).

I guess I mean is it isn't taboo, or unmentionable because of its nature. Women shouldn't be embarrassed by it.

I tend to think sometimes that the way society portrays menstruation, the perceived ideal must be for every woman to have moulded plastic, barbie doll style instead.

**

Edit: Your symptoms sound *way* more painful than mine. [Frown] Have you considered any drugs or anything to help? I know some versions of the pill can regulate heavy periods and cramping.

That does sound horrible, ketchup queen. And I'm not trying to belittle your experiences. Rather just to suggest that menstruation is perfectly natural and normal. And happens to over half the population of the world.

I read that story! It sounded good to me! As long as it's not anything like a tampon-- they make my cramps much worse. >_<

I can't take any kind of hormonal bc, even low dose, because of a personal and family history of extreme low blood pressure and a family history of strokes while on hormonal bc.

As for other treatment, I don't have a doctor, health insurance, or money. I have a prescription painkiller, which I love; in conjunction with ibuprofen, it does completely stop the cramps. It's lovely, but I can't take it while nursing, so I have a substitute right now.

The substitute is not as good.

What a bugger of a situation.

I personally think that healthcare related to menstruation should be free. And all related products should be *heavily* rebated by the Government.

And I've taken nearly every form of the pill available, and had the shot (depo-provera), none of which helped me. Even had exploratory surgery to find out what was going on when the ultrasounds were inconclusive. There's nothing physiologically wrong with me except for major hormone imbalances which mean incredibly bad periods. At least this month, I didn't throw up (why don't we have a barfing graemlin?) At least I'm finally in perimenopause, so I'm in the home stretch. It'll finally be over. In a few more years.

On to the original topic, I checked out the links - thanks to all for providing them. [Big Grin] I've found a few bulletproof bras that look like they have more than adequate support, but I'm not sure that I want to carry around an extra few pounds in bra. And wouldn't they be hot? [Dont Know]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Cotton bras, even fortresses of cotton bras, can be more breathable than some others, especially if everything you're wearing is cotton. Of course, some people say the opposite. That's my opinion, though, and I'm sticking to it.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Yep, I would prefer a cotton bra. But it's gotta be underwire, too, and that makes it much more difficult.

Sigh.

If only I were flatter. [Frown]

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Quid, have you tried Ultram for the pain? That's my miracle drug. It not only kills the pain (faster, as I said, if I take a couple of Advil liquigels at the same time), it makes me happy while the dose lasts. A very rare state during a period, otherwise.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Cotton underwires are out there. I've found some from Hanes before, although their selection fluctuates wildly.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Ultram? It sounds...mahvellous! I'll have to see if I can find it here. I was happy when I finally figured out what ibuprofen goes by here...

Tramadol is the generic name. I think.

It works on pain receptors like a narcotic, but is not a narcotic, if I understand correctly.

Yep, found both, and you're correct about one being the generic name for the other. I'm hunting up info for it now. I have to go get another antibiotic for this damn ear infection that isn't going away, so I'll see if they have this at the same time.

If it's sticking, it's not breathing real well . . .

quid, I detest underwires. In my experience, most of Goddess and Glamorise's lines do a pretty good job of providing support without those nasty dig-in-to-me-all-day wires. I can provide specific model recommendations if you like, but I'm far more limited than you in my selection. I haven't been able to buy bras in a department store -- in the US, mind -- for many a moon.

I totally feel your pain, btw, quid. These are cotton/underwire and pretty comfortable, although they didn't have my size when I bought them from LB. (And now they do. Punks.)

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Underwires don't dig into me, but if they're not there, honestly, I tend to fall out. [Roll Eyes] And I find the underwire bras far more comfortable for me. [Dont Know]

imenimok - your name is too confusing!!!! Okay, back to topic at hand - that bra looks awfully bulletproof - like kevlar or something. Is it just how it looks on the model, or does it look like that in real life, too?

I had noticed that one, and other than the bulletproofness, it looked like it could do the job rather well.

Note: the Lane Bryant site fiazko just linked to is another, separate site from their catalog site. Why their stores have a separate site, with different merchandise (some overlap) has always puzzled me. Then again, I think they should do as AmeriMark does and make it possible to order from all their catalogs at one site as one combined order.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

imogen, there are other reusable options besides the cups... washable pads, sea-sponge reusable tampons, that sort of thing. I'm not going to go hunting for the links from work, but anyone who's interested should google Luna Pads or... hmmmm... not remembering any other brand names. I'll check the back of my radical feminist magazines when I get home tonight if anyone wants.

Oh! And Wacky Jac sells cotton underware with little pockets in them for reuseable pads. Um, their's is also a site I don't visit from work, and people who prefer their t-shirts without sexual innuendo might not want to visit at all. I'll link straight to the product in question when I get home.

Moon Rags might be another brand name to check out, that sounds right.

[Confused] What makes that one "bulletproof"? Are you saying you prefer lace to solid fabric?

imenimok - your name is too confusing!!!!
Uhh, sorry?

And I'm not sure what you mean by bulletproof, either. Are you talking about those thick, stand up on their own type bras that make me wonder because why oh why would a DD+ need extra padding? If that's what you mean, then no, they are like they look in the picture. The only issue I have with them, aside from them being the wrong size is the the sides go pretty much all the way up to your armpit. I think the reason this is an issue for me, though, has to do with the size thing that I just won't get into right now. Point is that, other than the very sturdy underwire, the fabric is...limp. Oh, and another thing--I tried a very similar style, but the rim (the seam around the bottom that is usually made out of the scratchiest material possible) is very soft. No scratchy.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Um, should have been more clear. Confusing in that I have to look at your name three times to make sure I spell it correctly. Cuz I'm lame. [Dont Know]

I appreciate the warning about the fabric going up to the pits. I can't have that - I'd rip the thing off and never wear it again. I'm fickle that way. No, seriously, some things just annoy me to no end, and that's one of them. Not good about the fabric being limp, either.

Hmm. Back to the drawing board.

Posted by imenimok (Member # 7679) on :

Ok, what kind of fabric are you looking for? (And how about Ime or Imen as someone did in another thread?)

Yup, and I'm easily confuzzled already. [Dont Know] [ROFL] Don't worry, imenemok, I'll figure it out eventually. [Smile]

I would prefer cotton, and definitely underwire. Do NOT need extra padding - I'm large enough as it is. Can't stand the fabric bunching up around the pits.

Um, what else do you need to know?

Oh, lace vs. solid fabric doesn't matter, I don't think. I'm not sure that I've ever had a solid fabric bra before. Hmm. Wait, I think I did, and it was a cotton one, and I liked it, so yes, that would be fine. As long as it's not a stand-on-your-own-and-keep-it's-shape type of conehead thing.

Sigh.

I'm pathetic. Really, I do know this. Honest. [Dont Know]

Posted by imenimok (Member # 7679) on :

Ok, it doesn't bunch in the pits. It just extends all the way up. I guess it might depend on where you wear the back. Does that make sense? With the particular size I got, I can't wear them as low as I'd like to. Maybe with the proper size, that wouldn't be an issue. I want to get one in my size, but the website isn't working right for me.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Yeah, I didn't explain myself well enough. Even if it's not actually bunching at the pits, the fact that it goes that high will feel like it's bunching at the pits to me. I can't stand tight or restrictive, generally speaking, because my skin is sensitive to textures and such. Anything at the pits would drive me nuts.

Ewok it is, then. [Big Grin]

Lucky, think about who's doing the shopping. Think about where she lives. Think about all those other threads where she complained about being so hot she was constantly sweating. Think about the last time she's seen snow or even anything below 25 Celsius. Then think about the places she's talked about visiting lately - places like Dubai, where it heats up to well over 100 F (I've heard 120-140 - not sure how realistic those numbers are), or Thailand, or Singapore - places that are hot hot hot. Now, does she really need to worry about colder moments?

[/snarky]

Nah, don't need to worry about that stuff. What I do need, however, is breathability. Ventilation. Comfort. And definitely NOT padding. Please, no padding. Honestly. [Big Grin]

Imenemok - naw, stick with this one. It's cool, and I'll get used to it. Don't worry about it so much. Oh, and welcome to Hatrack btw! [Smile]

Lucky - yeah, no problem. Um, even when I lived in colder climates, I gotta be honest with you - I never relied on my bra for the extra insulating factor. Wow. My condolences on the ones that got through.

See, my bra problem is the inverse of yours, I think. I wear a size just enough on a weird border to not be in any stores (40C) but I absolutely have to have a molded cup with enough padding to make it totally smooth. Everything above a 36 tends to be those saggy lace bags and I really can't deal with those. In fact, I'd be pleased with a nice metal bustier if one were in my price range.

I generally don't worry about if I'm showing or not, because when I am even thick bras can't stop it and I think padded bras are stupid. And uncomfortable.

I did, however, once highly amuse a male friend while we were at lunch... we passed two guys going the other way and one of them kinda elbowed his friend and made a comment about the temperature, while very obviously looking at me. I glanced down and said "But I'm not even showing!" or something along those lines. My friend felt the need to apologize for his gender, but still laughed at me.

See, while a more protective (not padded, just protective) bra may not fully eradicate the "showing" problem, it ameliorates it enough to make it worth the loss of breathability. For me, anyway.

My only contribution, as a guy who has been married to a bountiful lady for many years, is that if you find a bra you like buy a lot of them. Buy one or two a month, if you need to budget for it. Stock up, because they will very likely go away.

Bra companies delight in dropping lines and sizes that fit my wife. She swears she can hear them cackling to themselves over it.

Quid - if you don't mind me asking, what size are you? I've had to buy specialty bras for YEARS. I'm currently a 36HH. Yes, HH. That's not a typo. I'm 5'2", and my chest measurement is 54" if you run the tape measure all the way around my boobs. I am actually scheduled for breast reduction surgery on June 22nd, and I CANNOT WAIT.... I've been trying for years and I've finally been approved. I guess once you reach "circus freak" status they think that maybe you're not making it up. I have several websites that are good sources, but if you get much bigger than a DDD, you're not going to find anything really *sexy*. Comfort and avoiding the uni-boob are just about all you can hope for... I haven't been able to wear a "sexy" bra since sometime around 1991-1992.

Glad Rags has great re-usable pads. I actually make my own from old cloth diapers with a layer of fleece on the back to prevent leakage. Sew on some snaps and...viola! I haven't bought menstrual products in over 10 years.

I am wearing a Decent Exposures bra right now. It's very comfy, and the organic cotton is very breathable. I know they're not underwire, quid, but they have better support than you'd think.

I also like the smooth "t-shirt" bras, that have some padding in them. But...they crinkle in the wash! I don't want dimpled boobs! I haven't been able to find any with padding that don't crinkle, so I have to get ones with thinner/flexible padding. Does anyone know of a brand that doesn't do this? Preferably with underwires?

Eruve - I like the regular One Fabulous Fit bras from Maidenform. There are about a million incarnations (t-back, with lace, etc.) that I've not tried, but the regular one has enough padding to be comfy (and prevent headlighting) and doesn't get weird or bunchy when washed.

I suppose I need to go bra shopping somewhere swanky where they can measure me and tell me what size I should be wearing (and then sell me the right sized bra for a million dollars). When trying to measure myself the way most places tell you to, I get an absurd and impossible size. I guess I just need to start trying on more bra sizes and see if I can find the proper one. At the moment, I end up wearing a 38B with a bra extender on the biggest setting, and even then, it's not quite right. *sigh*

Bra shopping in Thailand is definitely out.
quote:
Bangkok - There's an old adage that size doesn't matter. Well, that is not always the case, especially if you happen to be an expatriate woman living in Thailand.

Apart from older foreign men running off with young Thai women, there can hardly be anything that arouses the passion of expatriate women in Bangkok more than the issue of brassieres - or the bra as it is more commonly known.

So what's the fuss? Thai women are just that much smaller in certain respects, and the local market does not cater to the thousands of expatriate women resident in this metropolis, who happen to be bigger.

Even a lady of minor proportions, say from Germany, can suddenly find herself going from a 36A to a 38C in the course a 12-hour flight from Frankfurt to Bangkok. Flattering you might say, but for the woman entering one of Bangkok's many department stores it is not a pleasant experience being told by one of the many smiling Thai shop assistants, "No. No. Tua yai" - "No. No. Big body." It can, in some cases, be soul destroying.

quote:
Bonnie Meyer, a teacher from Pretoria, said, "It's not possible to get a bra here that fits. Women with big breasts just do not exist in this country."

Ironically, Thailand manufactures enormous quantities of ladies underwear, but it is aimed at the Asian market only.

This really shouldn't surprise me.

I've tried finding similar info on Singapore, but haven't been able to locate any commentary either way.

However, in the search for similar info on Sri Lanka, I found this:
quote:
The Jathika Hela Urumaya wants to close down garment industries and also bring back all women in the Middle East. Please go to the newspaper and read it in full. Quoted below is the most relevant part. They [Jathika Hela Urumaya] are also against the lucrative garment factories which employ more than 350,000 people, mainly women. We don't want this country to be a tailoring shop for the world," Buddhist monk Athuraliya Ratana said at Horana. However, Horana is home to a Bodyline brassiere factory which has turned out 21 million T-shirt bras for Victoria's Secret in the last five years.
In theory, you'd think I'd be able to find some of these bras here. Now I want to know if they have a factory outlet, or if they sell any of the products locally.

Oh wait. But Victoria's Secret is limited in the larger sizes. It's probably a bust anyway. [Grumble]

I can't believe I haven't updated here with that House of Fashion horror story. [Mad] It was the week after that post up there, and we went and looked at bras. They had a few bras that were possibly in my size - spent half an hour fishing through the bras - and the possibles were all extremely flimsy lace that would probably get holes the first time they were worn. Still, I was willing to try out of desperation.

They had a sign up saying no refunds on bras and panties. Panties I understand, but bras? Whatever. So I ask the salesman (man, yes. No women working in the ladies lingerie section, go figure) for a change room and he said there wasn't one. I need to know if these will fit, I say. He says, "don't you know your size?" Uh, yeah, but they vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, and even within a manufacturer with different lines. There is no such thing as standardized sizing. They must be tried on to see if they fit. He says, "no, no fitting room. You can try it on here." What, in the store? In front of all these people? You want me to get naked? And he pretty much says nothing at that point, and I throw them down in a fit of disgust. I'm not buying something that I can't verify will fit and have no way to return. This should not be a crapshoot and the customer should not be forced to foot the bill for products that cannot be determined to be suitable.

I also went to the Triumph store - Triumph being a brand of bras. It's the manufacturer's outlet. I asked for underwire bras in my size, and I was told that underwire bras don't come in anything over a C cup and over a 36 band size. Why not, I asked. Because larger breasts don't need the underwire, the manager responded.

>_<

And now for part deux. I was getting weird error messages trying to post the whole thing, so broke it up to see if it would work.

Since then, I've kept looking. I've had many discussions with other women, and the general consensus is that all bras in this country - other than Odel's (which, let's face it, is an upscale store targeting foreigners and the rich) and House of Fashion, and the Triumph store, there are no other sources of underwire bras available for sale for the local women. Local women, including my mil, do not understand the value of underwire. Why would they when they've never felt or seen the difference?

So. My sister came for a visit, and at my request, came bearing bra patterns. [Party] One for underwire bras, one without underwires. I know which I prefer to make, but it's nice to have options in the event I need 'em. [Big Grin] So now, with patterns, it became time to enlist the mil.

This morning, we went shopping to Maharagama, a village close by which has an abundance of stores carrying fabrics of all kinds, notions shops (zippers, serger thread, buttons, lace...), and that sort of thing. There are even custom bra makers in shops here (not that we found them). We even found one shop that carried a huge stock of those foam bra cup thingies. Not in my size, of course, but still... It's looking hopeful. [Smile]

I get my bra strap elastic, the elastic for the bottom of the bra, the power net, the hooks and eyes... In short, I get everything I need to make 4 bras (or more - I'll see once I cut everything out) for around $6. Everything, that is, except the underwires.

Which no one has a clue where they can be found.

Time to either consult more women or order from overseas.

At least I'm now down to one item rather than, well, everything. [Smile]

How about cannibalizing your old bras for underwires? (also hooks, eyes, sliders, etc.)

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

Yeah, thought of that... Problem is that the old bra has underwires in the wrong diameter (I lost weight and the boobs shrunk [Smile] ). Hooks and eyes rust here, so they tend to need replacing before the bra is worn out - I have two bras that still fit but needs them replaced, and now that I have replacements, will do that today or tomorrow. Don't need the rings and sliders since I'm fitting the bra to *my* body, and so the straps will be sewn for my personal fit.

Now then, another thought had occurred to me last night about the underwires... Labour is cheap here. I might be able to go to a metal working shop and have them make me underwires. Probably cheaper than what I've found on the internet - cheapest is $1.65 per pair in my size plus shipping. I need to get Fahim to ask his mom what she thinks - she knows pretty much everything. [Big Grin]

Posted by MandyM (Member # 8375) on :

I would go ahead and put in sliders since in my experience, the elastic stretches over time and you may need to do them up occasionally. I guess if you are that good at sewing, you could just fix them though. Silly me. I wish I were good enough at sewing to make real stuff. I just canibalize my daughter's jeans.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

*laughs* I hear ya. [Smile]

The bra elastic I found is the really really really really good bra elastic, which surprised the heck out of me. It's the exact same elastic as what was on my $135 bra that I've worn for 3 1/2 years, and that elastic hasn't stretched a bit. Yeah, not worried. [Smile] But like you say, if it becomes a problem, I'll just take it apart and re-sew.

You know, you could take a class in sewing. It's not that hard once it's demystified. [Smile]

I was supposed to go with a friend to Victoria Secret tonight, she swears by the seamless bra (I don't remember if I got the name correct) and since I always complain about having large breasts, she wanted to come for moral support/to make me go.

I'm too chicken. I cancelled. I feel very uncomfortable with the whole "fitting". I know that I should get it done/I kind of want to but I'm really freaked out about it.

Can someone tell me what exactly that entails? Do I get to keep my shirt on? Am I being measured? Is some stranger in the changing room with me?

I'm not big on people I don't know real well touching me (especially relatively intimately), and I have always been fine when I had bras fit. To answer your questions in order:

You can, but they'll be able to get a much better fit if you don't.
Yes. Some experienced fitters can do a really good job by eyeballing, but most measure just to be sure.
Well, not while you're actually donning the bra, but given my suggestion for your first question, wouldn't you rather it be inside a changing room? [Wink]

Thread drift, sweetbaboo, it happens all the time. [Smile]

Be prepared to get naked in front of the fitter, and be prepared for her to give you bras to put on and have her examine how they look on you. Yep, you'll have a stranger in the changeroom with you. You're going to be about as naked as you expect. [Smile]

I've been reading up on bramaking for a while, doing my research, and from what I can tell, from what others who've gone before me say, if you have basic sewing skills, it can be done. I have more than that, so... The first bra will likely take two or three hours to sew, and after that, the time taken will halve. It's all just straight stitches and zig zag stitches, nothing really that complicated. I've got the pattern, and there isn't that much to it. Okay, you've got to have precision, especially for sewing the underwire channeling, but it's really not complicated at all.

I'll tell you if that's true after I actually do it. [Wink]

quid, I didn't have to get naked to be sized. In fact, the fitters can usually give me opinions on the fit of the bra through my shirt.

The VS seamless bra is nice, but the materieal is REALLY REALLY warm, and it also stretches a bit. The Secret Embrace, I think it's called.

Actually, IME, even when you tell them what size you want, unless they think you're right on target, they'll suggest a fitting. [Big Grin]

Yeah, I usually just either wear a close-fitting tank top under a jacket or a small-ish tshirt. It only took them about 15 seconds to do the actual measuring (at VS), and then they asked me what kind of bra I was looking for, and they brought me about ten different ones to try.

The only reason childbirth isn't more embarrassing is because you're in pain and you'll do whatever it takes to get it over with.

Maybe if they gave you drugs that caused you pain that would only go away with the proper-fitting bra ... that would help. [Smile]

quid, I was looking for something else entirely and came across a page with info on sweing bras. Here are two links from it--sounds like you totally know what you are doing already, and have probably read similar if not the same info, but thought I'd pass it along just in case:

Article from Threads magazine on bra-making.

Underwire and Bra FAQs (not formatted nicely and a lot extraneous stuff, but looks like lots of detailed info)

Uprooted, I've come across both of those before and read them - fantastic information in both. [Smile] Thanks for reminding me to re-read them - I'll probably learn a bunch of stuff all over again. [Wink]

And, no, I don't know what I'm doing already. I'm just willing to go ahead and do it anyway. [Razz]

ummm, thank you for your restraint in not asking what "sweing bras" are! [Wink]

I think sweing bras must be very uncomfotable.

Went to Victoria's Secret tonight and was fitted for a bra...with my shirt on (tight with the layered) and it worked fine. I was happy/a little surprised to find out that I've been purchasing the correct size of bras over the years!

Thank you for your encouragement and help.

I LIVED!!! and I have two new bras. [Big Grin]

So*, I am, if nothing else, the queen of procrastination. I have not yet sewed my own bra. I have not located underwires, nor have I had any made.

Within the last month, my last two underwire bras have decided to die.

One, which had a great fit - perfect fit, even - used the wrong fabric for the construction. Too stretchy, so not enough support. Well, the lace is giving way and, well, it's just not worth attempting to fix.

However, because the actual fit is perfect, I can take it apart and use it for a pattern. Then I really will have a perfectly fitting bra. [Big Grin] And the underwires in that one are still intact, so I'm going to use them in making another bra.

My second bra... The fit wasn't as good, but what the hay, it was fairly close. But then, three days ago, one underwire snapped. Then today, the other one went. >_<

I'm now desperate.

I did manage to find one non-underwire bra that fits reasonably enough that I bought it - and that's a whole other story, in and of itself - although it's not comfortable and doesn't have the support I want, and it tends to make my boobs into sausages. Still, it'll do me for now.

So, I found a few places online that will sell underwires and ship 'em out. So, that's what I'm going to do. Sometime in the next couple of days. I just have to figure out the proper underwire size first. But luckily, one of the sites had a printable page that I could use to compare to my existing underwire to find out its size. Only I've lost that page, so I'll have to hunt it down again. :grr:

So*. That's where it stands. Or droops. As the case may be. [Smile]

How long will it take to get the stuff you need shipped to Sri Lanka?

(you could always, ya know, stand on your head in the meantime!) [Smile]

[ROFL] Yeah, lovely imagery there, Farmgirl. [Razz]

I dunno. A week or two?

I'll have to order channelling for the underwire, too. As I'm taking this bra apart (I need to photograph it - my memory being as lousy as it is - so I can make sure I construct the new one in the proper sequence with the proper details) I've discovered that the channelling is multilayered. It's also why the underwire in this bra never poked through, which has in other bras with cheaper channelling. I want to get me the good stuff.

I also discovered that I may not be able to recycle these underwires after all. Inside the channelling, holding the underwire in place (another reason it never poked through, I'm guessing), was some black sticky stuff. I'm really really really not sure what it is. The other bra I disassembled didn't have it. I'm wondering if the underwire was glued into the channelling before the channelling was sewn into place or something like that. [Dont Know] Or, yeah, I dunno.

Anyway, what I need should be a fairly small package, light enough and small enough that it should (hopefully) land here direct without going through customs.

Meanwhile, I can still get everything else ready and maybe make a bra or two using the cups from this soon-to-be-disassembled bra and the the non-underwire bra pattern that my sister brought me.
