100 Days until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince!
Reason #100: Lightning shaped scars are hot!
(By way of explanation, sarcasticmuppet started a similar countdown-thread yesterday, but she was a day early (overly excited perhaps? ). I thought about just using her thread as a conduit for the thread I was planning, but I thought that since my plan is slightly different it would be ok to start a new one.)
This is the idea: I will post a different reason to love Harry Potter with every day of the countdown. Feel free to add your own, but try to keep them for the same day of the countdown (ie. any reasons posted today would be under reason #100) so that the countdown can remain intact.

Harry Potter is the only children's book not dealing with potty-training, in which the author faces reality: there are bathrooms.

Harry Potter has ruined my life. Since harry potter became popular, i haven't gone anywhere without someone telling me how much i look like him. For a while, when people asked me to sign stuff (thinking I was Daniel Radcliff) I signed for them. But it is a pain none the less. I would deeply like for the Harry Potter movies and books to end, so that I can on with my life.

Dude, I have the exact same problem! Don't be annoyed, enjoy it Its been less of a problem since I gained some height and grew a beard. But freshman year, even before the movies even started coming out, people would come up to me all the time and say I looked exactly like they imagined Harry. I had the messy dark dark brown hair, glasses and everything. Its not a bad thing, its fun
But if it really bugs you that much, just grow a beard, that'll solve the problem. After I did that people stopped telling me I looked like him

97 Days until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince!
Reason #97:
quote: A breeze ruffled the neat hedges of Privet Drive, which lay silent and tidy under the inky sky, the very last place you woud expect astonishing things to happen. Harry Potter rolled over inside his blankets without waking up. One small hand closed on the letter beside him and he slept on, not knowing he was special, not knowing he was famous, not knowing he would be woken in a few hours' time by Mrs. Dursley's scream as she opened the front door to put out the milk bottles, nor that he would spend the next few weeks being prodded and pinched by his cousin Dudley....He couldn't know that at this very moment, people meeting in secret all over the country were holding up their glasses and saying in hushed voices: "To Harry Potter--the boy who lived!"

quote: "I think I know who that one's from," said Ron, turning a bit pink and pointing to a very lumpy parcel. "My mom. I told her you didn't expect any presents and--oh, no," he groaned, "She's made you a Weasley sweater."
Harry had torn open the parcel to find a thick, hand-knitted sweater in emerald green and a large box of homemade fudge.
"Every year she makes us a sweater," said Ron, unwrapping his own, "and mine's always maroon."

It sneezed. A couple of sparks flew out of its snout.
"Isn't he beautiful?" Hagrid murmured. He reached out a hand to stroke the dragon's head. It snapped at his fingers, showing pointed fangs.

Reason #75: Harry's messy hair
quote: About once a week, Uncle Vernon looked over the top of his newspaper and shouted that Harry needed a haircut. Harry must have had more haircuts than the rest of the boys in his class put together, but it made no difference, his hair simply grew that way--all over the place.

57 Days until Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince!
Reason #57: Dumbledore's abundant wisdom
quote:"The sorting hat placed you in Gryffindor. You know why that was. Think."
"It only put me in Gryffindor," said Harry in a defeated voice, "because I asked not to go in Slytherin...."
"Exactly," said Dumbledore, beaming once more. "Which makes you very different from Tom Riddle. It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities."

Harry, who happened to be in the room at the time, froze as he heard Ron's voice answer.
"HELLO? HELLO? CAN YOU HEAR ME? I--WANT--TO--TALK--TO--HARRY--POTTER!"
Ron was yelling so loudly that Uncle Vernon jumped and held the receiver a foot away from his ear, staring at it with an expression of mingled fury and alarm.
"WHO IS THIS?" he roared in the direction of the mouthpiece. "WHO ARE YOU?"
"RON--WEASELY!" Ron bellowed back, as though he and Uncle Vernon were speaking from opposite ends of a football field. "I'M--A-FRIEND--OF--HARRY'S--FROM--SCHOOL--"

"Blown up a toilet? We've never blown up a toilet."
"Great idea though, thanks, Mom."
...
"Hurry up!" their mother said, and the three boys clambered onto the train. They leaned out of the window for her to kiss them good-bye, and their younger sister began to cry.
"Don't, Ginny, we'll send you loads of owls"
"We'll send you a Hogwarts toilet seat."

Oh my gosh! You are so funny! Are you Emily and Amanda?
OK, first of all, I feel I must apologize for the fate of this thread. I went out of town fully intending to continue it while I was gone (I even packed two of my Harry Potter books!), but it just didn't happen. I was visiting my boyfriend before he left for Japan for the rest of the summer (internship). Anyway, I could have caught this thread up this week, but I was totally overwhelmed at the idea of doing it. A friend who reads my thread actually brought it to my attention just now, or I wouldn't have seen it at all.
Second of all, I love Hatrack.
That is all.

Reason #54: Professor Trelawney's death omens
quote:"I see," said Professor McGonagall, fixing Harry with her beady eyes. "Then you should know, Potter, that Sibyll Trelawney has predicted the death of one student a year since she arrived at this school. None of them has died yet. Seeing death omens is her favorite way of greeting a new class. If it were not for the fact that I never speak ill of my colleagues--"
Professor McGonagall broke off, and they saw that her nostrils had gone white.

I watched PoA last night, and noticed something. When Lupine turns into the werewolf, Snape instantly pushes the children behind him protectively. He does it again a minute later.
I like that they didn't take the cartoonish route and make everything about Snape less than admirable. I wish they had done the same with Malfoy. But that little scene made me like the movie even more.
Posted by SC Carver (Member # 8173) on :
Yea, In the 5th book she does a good job of developing Snape. It was good to find out why he hated HP from day one.

OK, Rowling said the half Blood prince isn't Harry or Voldermort. And there is a clue to who he is in C.o.S. when Harry goes in the chamber.
The only thing down there is Harry, Tom Riddle, Ginny, the Basilisk, a bunch of columns and a giant statue:
quote: Harry had to crane his neck to look up into the giant face above: It was ancient and monkeyish, with long, thin beard that fell almost to the bottom of the wizard's robe
So what does this mean? Is the statue of Slytherin. If so does that make him the HBP?
Are there any other nerds out there who have thoughts on the matter?
Posted by Liaison (Member # 6873) on :
Carver, I think that when Rowling is referring to a clue in 'Chamber' it doesn't necessarily mean IN the actual chamber. I believe it means the clue is somewhere within the entire book.
Reason #27:
quote:Indeed, a week after Fred and George's departure Harry witnessed Professor McGonagall walking right past Peeves, who was determinedly loosening a crystal chandelier, and could have sworn he heard her tell the poltergeist out of the corner of her mouth, "it unscrews the other way."

Posted by Hamson (Member # 7808) on :
quote: The link between Chamber of Secrets and Half-Blood Prince relates to a discovery Harry made in 'Chamber' that foreshadows something that he finds out in 'Prince'.
It didn't say that someone/thing in the chamber IS the prince
