Crash #1, Last week the logic board on my 4 month old PowerMac G5 died taking my hard drive with it. Because it isn't automatically backed up I've lost ~4 months of work.

Crash #2: Yesterday I went out for Rich for my first long road ride of the season (~40 miles). Just as we were heading back, my left pedal fell off the bicycle. This is a really bizarre thing to happen on any bicycle, particularly one with Super Record Cranks. This happened just as I'd popped out of the saddle to climb a small rise and caused me to nearly instantly crash had to the ground. I cracked my helmet, put a really painful bruise on the back of my hip and small scrapes on my elbow and knee.

The worst part of the whole affair was that in its daring escape from the crank, the pedal managed to damage the the threads on the crank so that the pedal couldn't be reattached to the bicycle. I'm confident that it can be easily fixed with a tap, but that didn't help me yesterday when I was 20 miles from home, out at the great salt lake (ie middle of nowhere) with only one pedal.

So I pedaled with one foot into a head wind for about 10 miles while my husband raced home to get a car to rescue me.

The trickiest thing about trying to ride with only one pedal (and two feet) was that there was really no where to put my left food and riding with it dangling to the side or perched on the stays was really weird.

((rabbit))

I couldn't resist a dobie, cause I always confuse these 2 words, but this sucks.

The pedal stayed nicely attached to the cleat which remained firmly on my shoe which remained on my foot throughout the crash.

Owwww! Glad your home and safe now, but that's a real downer, especially on your first ride. [Frown]

ick, ick, ick, I hate that, It's bad enough walking in shoes that have cleats on them when you aren't on a bike but to have it dangling from your shoe.

*shudders*

Well it wasn't exactly my first ride since I did about 80 miles of dirt riding over spring break and I've been bike commuting through out the winter. It was however my first outing on my road bike.

Don't worry, the peddle was removed from the shoe very shortly after the crash. (Before I got up in fact).

Ai. Glad you were wearing your helmet.

Ditto. Once the bruises have faded and the bike is fixed, though, it will be a good story. You're legs are so strong that you sheered a pedal right off!

Afraid not, the pedal came unscrewed. This is a really bizarre event since the left pedal is reverse threaded so that it will tighten rather than loosen as you pedal. We are still trying to figure out how this happended.

On the bright side, all that one footed pedaling gave me a real chance to work on my pedaling technique. I discovered I've got a dead spot at the top of my pedal stroke and made some progress in eliminating it.

I actually sheared a pedal right off once. I was doing about the same thing Rabbit was doing—standing up to get more leverage—and it snapped right off. It must've been a cheap-o pedal, 'cause I don't think my legs are that strong.

Goodness. >.<

I knew it looked wrong when I typed it, but I was too tired to figure out the correct spelling.

So I loose 4 months of my work and injure myself in a bike crash and the most relevant comment you can make is to cricize my spelling.

Thanks for your sympathy, rivka. I'll be sure to remember that when you are having a catastrophically bad week.

I'm sorry. I was actually responding to the post directly above mine.

You're right, I should have a) resisted, and b) expressed (and not merely thought) my "ow! I'm glad you're ok"

Sorry to have been so snitty in my response Rivka, it really has been a catastrophically bad week which has made me more than usually irritable.

I really am sorry your week is going badly.

I'm not having a great one either.

You know you're in trouble when at 9 am on Monday, you can just TELL that it's going to be One of Those Weeks. [Wall Bash]

Ouch! Hope you avoided any head injuries. If you start agreeing with BC, call 911.

Bruises and scrapes heal, but data is gone forever. That is awful, ((Rabbit)), both crashes. [Frown]

Yeah, rivka, but you won't tell ME in chat what's up. I know, I know you probably just wanted to forget whatever it was. It's cool. [Big Grin]

If it were a single "it," I would have.

But the litany is just depressing. [Razz]
