As per request.

Friday is up to you all. Some Hatrackers are involved in the rehearsal Friday evening and anyone who is around on Friday afternoon and wants to help decorate is welcome, but otherwise you’re on your own.

Saturday:

Anyone in the wedding party should be at church and ready for pictures by 1pm. (There are rooms to change in there, or you can get ready at the hotel.)

The wedding ceremony is at 4pm. It’s approximately a five minute walk from the hotel.

The reception from 5:30-10, exactly three miles from the church. If the receiving line after the ceremony goes too long, it might start late. Assuming it starts on time, dinner will be served at 6 and dancing will start at 7.

Everyone is invited to everything on Saturday.

We’d like to get a group photo of all the Hatrackers at some point in the reception. Maybe arrange to all meet on the dance floor when the band takes their first break?

As far as Friday night, Saturday morning, and Sunday entertainment go – you’ve got a bookstore, art galleries, a food court, an arcade, bowling, and pool right in the building. (On Friday night there is glow-in-the-dark bowling!)

Thanks, Dana.

Is there anywhere close for a Sunday morning church service?

Farmgirl

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

Well, there's that church that's a five minute walk from the hotel . . .

(And about twenty other churches within a half mile. Pick your denomination. [Big Grin] )

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

The dance is like.... dressy dance, right? Like the dressy stuff we wear to the wedding is still what people will wear to the dance?

Ames LDS church There's a family ward at 9:00 am and a student ward at 11:45 am. Now that's nice - when you don't really have to share a building, you can pick your times.

If Dana was preaching, though, I would totally go to that. [Smile] Any chance? No?

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

Yep. ElJay has said that she'll be changing out of her Maid of Honor attire into a different dress at some point in the evening, but other than that I don't know of anyone changing clothes.

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

No. Dana is not preaching that Sunday. [Big Grin]

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

I think that was "may" be changing, not "will" be changing. It's long and straight, and I like to dance, so it depends on how hard it is to dance in. And if anyone there will dance with me, of course. [Big Grin]

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

It's not straight! Straight was an option, but we went with A-line.

Eeep, did anyone tell Nancy which of the patterns in that packet to use!?!?!?!

*runs to call Mom*

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Oh dear. I didn't mean to cause a panic... I knew it was A line, (and I hope Nancy knows, too) but A line and floor length is still a lot narrower than a full skirt, and, in my opinion, harder to swing dance in.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

So, well you're in here, did you get my e-mail from last night?

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

Yes, thank you.

Edit: and you didn't cause the panic, I just realized that I never told Mom which one it was, so I don't know what she told Nancy.

Does that mean we have to dance at the reception?

Ivygirl <- Can't dance at all

You don't have to dance. But it's fun, and if you want to learn how, I'll teach you. I've led before... as long as I can remember to start off on the wrong foot, I think I can lead pretty well.

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

Yes. Everyone must dance. If you do not dance you will be ground up for sausage.

(No, of course you don’t have to dance!)

Oh, and ElJay, I might have to take you up on those lessons, if you don't mind. The best I can do is the high school slow dancing where you just sway back and forth. [Roll Eyes] Knowing actually how to dance might be good when going to future dances. Maybe. [Wink]

Brochure cover for the ElJay School of Swing Dance

At one time I was contemplating hiring a teacher to come to the reception and do some quick lessons for anyone who wanted them. Would that be cool or hokey? Dad thought it would be tacky, because it implies that we don't think our guests know how to dance.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Well, I've taken swing dance lessons before.

I could teach Ivygirl, but I doubt she wants to learn from me.

However, I haven't done it in years, so I hope I remember how!

Farmgirl

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

No, I don't want to learn from you if you don't remember how! [Taunt] I'd like to learn the correct way to dance.

[Laugh] Farmgirl and Ivygirl

Ivy, you're on. I can at least give you some pointers on how to follow, and if you're dancing with someone with a good lead that's all you need to know.

And that picture is somewhat misleading, as the actual instructor was behind the camera. [Razz]

The photographer has informed me that the lighting at the reception will probably be inadequate for a large group picture. Therefore, if it is not raining (or snowing) everyone from Hatrack will please remain at the church until after the receiving line is over, at which time we will take a group picture on the front steps.

If it is raining, one of the bridesmen will be put in charge of lighting for photographs at the reception. He can bring his new theatre lights that filled up the back of Bob's car on the way home from our last trip to Minnesota thus requiring that all the shower gifts be left at Mom and Dad's for three weeks.

And jatraqueros, miss the pic after the ceremony and you will face my wrath. [Mad]

Well, I talked to my first Hatracker on the phone tonight, so I'm closer to not being a rumor than I ever have been!

As for my coming to the wedding...it's very tempting. It's also a very long drive though. And yet...I'm on the verge of committing to coming. It really would be a lot of fun.

I am, quite possibly, the worst dancer on the face of the earth. I have cracked up the entire group of attendees at Lao New Years parties. However, I'm kind of intrigued by swing dancing. If I come, and if ElJay thinks she's up to the challenge, I'd be interested in learning a step or two.

foolf is floof backwards, which is what I heard the bride from last weekend's wedding say a lot. As in, "Can you please floof my dress?"

Weather forecast for Ames, Iowa, for the weekend:

Friday, April 1 - Mostly sunny, high 50, low 30
Sat. April 2 - Mostly sunny, high 59, low 40
Sun. April 3 - Partly cloudy, high 59, low 40

it doesn't give the wind.

However, our state is forecasting a breezy day for Friday, which I'm hoping will be a south wind pushing me northward, to save on gas mileage.

And God wants us to go on a honeymoon.

Two weeks ago, when I was just getting ready to call around to find someone to cover the nursing home service for me on April 3rd the Evangelical church pastor called and asked if I'd trade Sundays with him because he had visitors coming into town unexpectedly. The next day I planned to spend hours calling around to find a guest preacher for April 10th and the local Gideons called that morning (before I was even out of bed!) to ask if there was a Sunday this spring when they could come and give a presentation.

It was a good week.

CaySedai, what time on Saturday night do you have to be back?

Mapquest tells me Otho is 1 hour 9 minutes from Ames. Roads trips don't both me any. If we wouldn't have to leave until after the reception is over and someone is willing to go with me to provide company for the way back, I can totally see taking you home Saturday night.

If you want to, of course, and can get Saturday off work. Think about it. No rush. When would we be able to pick you up?

Posted by CaySedai (Member # 6459) on :

ElJay:

it just may be possible! I'm talking to someone who is on maternity leave and she may be willing to work for me if her husband isn't working that evening. She's going to get back to me.

Edited to add: I have to ask the person who is in charge Saturday if it's okay to substitute like this. She will probably say yes. I am even paying my niece to babysit for the person taking my hours on Saturday. I'll know tomorrow if it's a go.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your offer. If I get permission, I'll get back to you on when and where. I think if I'm back by midnight that would be soon enough. We have General Conference on Sunday, which means church starts at 11 a.m.

I hate to say this, Icky, but both major airports in Chicago are positioned about forty-five minutes from Chicago. If you're flying into O'Hare, you'll have just enough time to do, well, nothing. (In fact, given the design of O'Hare, you might have just enough time to get to your connecting terminal; some of them are located in what often feels like downtown Skokie.)

If you had three hours in Chicago, I could give you a great list of things to buzz by. But an hour is probably just enough time to get downtown from O'Hare. [Frown]

However - perhaps someone else can take her home -- I don't like driving real late at night (like after the reception) I tend to fall asleep too easily..

FG -- Thanks. I was hoping someone else would be able to pick her up, and then I will take her home, with anyone who would be willing to ride along.

We're also going to have to figure out which of the drivers are leaving when Sunday. I figure you'll be going pretty early, since you've got quite a drive ahead of you. The "returns" to the Des Moines airport have flights leaving at roughly 2:30, 4:30, and 6:30, and I apparently have to be back up here for a family dinner Sunday night, so I won't be able to make any except maybe the first run.

Yes, I will be leaving pretty early on Sunday (might just have to skip going to any church service) so that I arrive back here around 5 PM for a evening meeting I have.

I just realized that we are going to have Hatrackers together, in person, on Friday. Which is April Fool's Day.

I don't generally play April Fool's jokes. I like jokes at other times of year much more. But this really kinda scares me, because I'm sure some of you realized this months ago and have been planning accordingly. [Angst]

I wasn't planning on wearing nylons, since I'm wearing open toed shoes. Are they required? If so, I'll have to stop at a store...

But seriously... Mom said something about there being a little going out tonight, is it casual? Is there anything besides the wedding proper I need special clothes for? (And my twin set for the rehersal, of course.)

dkw, I saw from the forum page that you'd posted in the "leave me alone!" thread. Once I read it, I was fairly certain you weren't screaming leave me alone at the top of your lungs yet.

However, I now wonder. . . you know, how you're doing.

::bestJoeyimitation:: How you doin'? ::/bestJoeyimitation::

Getting a bit stressed out yet?

Just take a deep breath. It'll all be over Saturday night. And nothing earth shattering is going to happen. The sun will come up on Sunday morning. Everyone important will still care about you.

Icarus, are you trying to push her over the edge? [No No]

My husband once forgot to bring his suit to a wedding. Had to buy a new one.

I was also a maid of honor who lost the engagement ring at the church. It was found. [Blushing]

Everything's going to be fine.

How's Bob doing? (Bob, how's Dana doing?)

I've been thinking about you guys. Wondering how nervous y'all were getting. Remember to breathe. I'm sure everyone is telling you that this is supposed to be your day. You should enjoy it. Yet at the same time, they are also telling you what you *should* be doing. And you have your own ideas of what is proper and how you'd like to treat your guests and realize that it's probably too much to ask of anyone and occasionally get crushed by the weight it all. So much pressure. From them, from youselves. Ugh.

But try to have fun. In a few years, it will be nothing more than a funny story (or romantic one, either way, you'll have a good story. Maybe even a little of both.) The wedding will be a memory, but your family and friends will still love you.

Breathe. It'll be okay. Really. (I'm not trying to be one of those people who are telling you what to do, or anything. I mean, you have to breathe anyway, right?)

[Wave]

[Kiss]

[Edit: breath, breathe, all the same thing, right? [Wink] ]

I have a question related to fun stuff...

Due to an unfortunate case of advanced and terminal lazy/busyness, I didn't get a hotel until today. I can't remember which one I got, but I know that the Hatrack one is filled. O_o Are all of the hotels terribly far from the official Hatrack hotel or no? Because I wanna spend time with my peeps.

Oh, and I wholly expect that all of you do your best to convince my mother to join the forum.

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

We're talking about a town of under 50,000 people. Nothing is terribly far from anywhere. The Hatrack Hotel is the only one within walking distance (hence why it's the Hatrack Hotel), but the others are only 5-10 minutes away if you're driving.

Balck jeans count as semi-formal in my book.

Dana is being just wonderful! She wisely sent me out on errands so that I would have something to work off my annoying habit of worrying about everything, including stuff I can't do anything about.

I did get her to react impatiently a couple of times today (so far) asking about stuff she can't get to right away but knows needs to be done, and once questioning a decision that'd already been decided.

I really am annoying. I know it. I've been this way my whole life. Ask my mom when you see her. She'll tell you!

But see, Dana is a really, really good person, and hasn't even come close to threatening physical harm.

She's calmly doing church-related work that has to get done today. Later, we're going to help.

Dana's mom is in the kitchen making purple frosting flowers for the wedding cake.

I'm staying out of the way and hoping that she still thinks I'm cute after this is all over.

It might be poofy shirt time soon.

The flowers are absolutely stunning.

Ryuko, do you have a non-refundable room at that hotel? Because there's room for one more in Shigosei and mine's room (and I think I can speak for Shig in this case, since there were originally going to be three of us sharing the room). As long as you don't mind a trundle.

Won't work for tonight (I assume you either are there or will be shortly), but would for Friday and/or Saturday.

Let me know if I need to call them and tell them we need the cot (they said one could be added at any time).

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

There IS wireless internet access at the hotel. However, in our room, it really will only work in a couple spots. Actually, this one spot on the corner of one of the beds. We're on the top floor, so I imagine we're fairly far away from access points.

But access! Huzzah!

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Yes, I have a ride.

Yay for access! On the phone they said there was no access in the rooms, so that's good to know.

I can't finish packing too early. The frozen food would like to stay in the freezer as long as possible. But in about ten minutes, it's getting stuffed in the cooler, which will get stuffed in a bag and surrounded by the clothes and other things that don't fit in my carry-on. Everything is ready to get packed, all together on my bed.

I think it's everything.

And my web access keeps flaking out! [Razz]

Somehow or other, I got it all crammed in.

I hope they let me have my carry-on plus computer plus purse . . . (in theory it's computer OR purse)
