quick question. When using your computer to convert digital video to a dvd to watch on TV, how long does that usually take?

Quick answer: it depends.
Seriously. If the video is already a MPEG, it doesn't take very long.

I have used tmpgenc to convert .avi to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. It takes several hours, though I usually forget to bump up the priority until partway through the encoding process. Took all day once because I didn't realise the priority was set to idle time only. I have an Athlon 800 Mhz with 128 MB ram. Yeah, old, slow computer, but it works. [Smile]

You can make VCDs with MPEG-1. If you want to make a DVD, you need to use MPEG-2 (as far as I know), and you'll have to purchase a license for it.
