In case you don't know this already, the Linares tournament started a while ago. Tomorrow's the "start" of the second half, actually. Kasparov's in the lead with 4/6 (a +2 undefeated score), followed by Anand and Topalov with 3.5/6. You can find more info either on chessgames or chessbase, as the official site is not really working properly...

And since I'm talking about tournaments anyway I have one on Monday, here at the university. I played in my first tournament last year (also here) and, despite my amazing rate of sacrifices - or because of it? [Big Grin] - I wasn't very well placed in the end. I hope things change this year. I'm still toying with the Albin Countergambit with black and I've had quite a string of wins with it lately! Still learning my way through the Spanish with white though...

Fabulous Kasparov ! But Anand is very closed ! Personnally i hope he wins to let the russian out. He doesn't want the reunification of the world title. So I dislike him [Mad]

Countergambi albin is an interesting defence but the ripost cxd5 followed by Cf3 is strong as Reuben Fine thoughed.
Against Queen gambit, i prefer the Polish defense. Actually i play Queen Gambit in attack and sicilians defences against e4. I pratice sicilian for few time, and i like it [Big Grin]

Good luck for your tournament and don't forget to search, in this order, checks, catches and menaces. It's the best way !

Well, I haven't read Fine's book, and apparently neither have my opponents! [Big Grin] So I'm going to stick to it for the time being, as I don't really enjoy the Queen's Gambit and don't have enough practice in the various Indians anyway.

While waiting for my "titre de sejour" some time ago I decided to check on same lines in the Albin CG after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e5 3.dxe5 d4 4.e4. Nobody has played this move against me yet, but it seems to give a pretty good game for white...

About the Linares tournament: you might want to check the Anand - Kasparov game. It was a very interesting Sicilian Scheveningen where many thought Anand had the edge, but Kasparov managed to find some marvelous defensive moves in time trouble and draw the game. Great play from both of them.

Thanks, and aye-aye, captain! [Hat]

(just a remark: "catches" are "captures" in English.)

Edit: Forgot to say: it might be too early to ask, but which lines do you like in the Sicilian? 2...d6, 2...e6 or 2...Nc6?

capture ! logic ! I lose some english words...

My second move is Nc6 to attack center and develop the knight.
But in reality the order is not important : the four first moves are totally interchangeable. I like to play Dragon too with g6.

Here we go again. English is not the problem here, chess is! [Big Grin]

cxd5 means:
- there a pawn on the c file (or column) of the chessboard
- it captures a piece or pawn: the "x" means capture
- the captured pawn or piece was located on the d5 square

On a chessboard columns are from "a" to "h" and lines from "1" to "8". The near left hand corner of the player who has white is the "a1" square. And it's a black square, for crying out loud!!! Sorry... [Embarrassed] Too many movies trying to show chess stuff with the board set up wrong...

I just remembered: Choobak, if you check the chessgames site, GM Ray Keene's page, he has posted some interesting novelties in the Queen's Gambit and the Sicilian, Accelerated Dragon. You might want to try them out. There's some discussion about them too, and I think a couple of games played by other posters. You'll have to go to page 134 for the S,AD idea and probably even further back for the QG one.
