Is GC broken or have I been banned? Just curious.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

O_o

Do you have reason to believe you have been banned? It seems to be working fine, though I haven't tried posting yet....

Posted by mothertree (Member # 4999) on :

Well, they banned my brother. I don't know if they just blocked this IP address (he's at my house) or what. Emotions have been running rather high. I get a "sorry, you are not allowed to use the board message" there is option to log in but my screen name doesn't change it.

*thought this was going to be a harvest moon thread.*

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

I haven't been on GC much, so I missed it all. Sorry that happened, and that as a consequence it very well may have incidentally banned you. [Frown]

Posted by mothertree (Member # 4999) on :

Oh well, I figured I wasn't going to be posting there a lot anymore, but I wanted to read what "Sheila" was saying.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Trisha, Jon realized what happened. See if you can log in now.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Man, you don't visit a place for a few weeks and everything goes to hell. What happened, if you don't mind my asking?

Posted by Billy Joel (Member # 5357) on :

I got pissed off. Other than that, everything is pretty cooled down now.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Some people got mad at Trisha's brother. Trisha stuck up for him. People got mad at him on Hatrack too when he briefly posted here. I think since he has been banned from GC, Trisha might not feel as comfortable there either, which is a shame. [Frown]

Posted by Billy Joel (Member # 5357) on :

I have no problem with Trisha, since she is a respectful person, and don't have any problems with her standing up for her brother. If she feels uncomfortable posting there because she thinks I don't like her, far from it.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Billy Joel, who are you? I could probably get it in three guesses, but I have no leads beyond that.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Hint: he's a former poster here, and there's a reason he knows what the deal is there.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Yeah, that's the only reason I could get it in three guesses. [Frown] Unfortunately, that doesn't help me know which of the three.

Edit: Typo. I have a good excuse. Baby on the lap. [Big Grin]

He had better know what goes on there . . .

Ahhhh....

Posted by Billy Joel (Member # 5357) on :

Uh, Rivka... who DO you think I am?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

*blink* Ok, so I was wrong.

But I know now.

I think.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Rats. Now I can't remember which of you is Billy Joel, which is Donny Osmond, and which is the assorted members of U2. Though I'm pretty sure Jon Boy wouldn't have used the phrase "pissed off." (or posted on Hatrack, for that matter.)

The Billy/Donny thing was pretty freakin' hilarious, though.

Ah, I miss those days.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

I'm pretty sure I would get it in one guess now. It was my original hunch anyway.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

And... I would have been wrong. [Wink]

Posted by AntiCool (Member # 7386) on :

I would not have been. [Razz] [Razz]

Posted by Lady Jane (Member # 7249) on :

Why would mothertree leave because of Nathan? The only reason to leave a place is if you are at odds with the mods.

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

<- Can't tell if kat is being serious, because her comment is fairly clearly untrue, yet she's never been too big on deadpan.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Well, that's not really true. If a place amounts to basically a few close friends and some hangers-on, and you've ticked off one of the "in" crowd, and the mods are themselves in the same crowd, it would be surprising if the atmosphere didn't feel a bit chilly.

Smaller forums suffer from this kind of heat-death all the time; they get closer and closer -- and more and more insular -- until newbies attempting to penetrate are just deflected, entirely by accident, and even "oldbies" wind up offending someone more popular and leaving, feeling unwelcome. I think the only reason defense any forum has against this is size and publicity.

Posted by Lady Jane (Member # 7249) on :

*considers*

I was being serious. Maybe I haven't seen enough dynamics of tiny, boutique forums yet? It's just that the idea that in order to post on Jon Boy's forum, you have to make sure Nathan likes you is preposterous to me. If you don't have a problem with the mods and the mods don't have a problem with you, why leave because some random member has a bee in his bonnet?

"If you don't have a problem with the mods and the mods don't have a problem with you, why leave because some random member has a bee in his bonnet?"

In the case of a small forum, a "random member" might generate 25% of the posts on that forum.

Posted by Lady Jane (Member # 7249) on :

Well, that's okay, as long as all 25% aren't attacks on you, it's not a problem to read. If you are fueding with the 25%er and can't stand to read a word, that's a reason to leave, but if you have no problem with them and it's their concern with you, but they choose to use the forum as a weapon instead of working it out, who cares what they think? If it's a matter of the mods protecting the person keeping their forum going, I think that would translate into a problem with the mods and might necessitate a change.

I'm still trying to figure out who the heck Billy Joel is. [Razz]

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Now, I don't know much, but it may be a matter of family loyalty. Nathan was never upset with Trisha. Only her brother.

Posted by Lady Jane (Member # 7249) on :

Right - but even if it was Trisha herself Nathan was mad at, why should she stop posting at GC because of him? It's not his forum.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Nathan didn't ban her brother. This isn't about Nathan at all.

Posted by Lady Jane (Member # 7249) on :

Hmm...not according to this thread.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Nathan only *thinks* its about him. [Razz]

Posted by saxon75 (Member # 4589) on :

Katie, I'm curious: what were your feelings about Tagon based on your own observations of his behavior? If you feel it's inappropriate to say, I understand.

Posted by Billy Joel (Member # 5357) on :

Ela, I'm Nathan.

And yeah, I did think this was because of me, which is why I said that I had no problem with her.

Posted by Lady Jane (Member # 7249) on :

I think it is innapropriate to say (he's not here, etc.), but I can say that feelings about my feelings about result and the method are different. Kind of like how Dag feels about the Supreme Court decision about no capital punishment for minors.

Nathan: Exactly. Banning someone because he annoyed you does NOT sound like the intelligent, level-headed Jon Boy we know and love. I doubt it's about you.

Nate, I already figured that out from GC. [Razz]

Posted by Billy Joel (Member # 5357) on :

Ok, Trisha, is there a reason why you were thinking of stopping posting there?

Posted by mothertree (Member # 4999) on :

Dude, I had no idea this thread was still going. I hope that the perception that I'm not fond of Nathan isn't fostered in any way by the thread about my job search. I realize we are in a mafia game and people are highly emotional. That's the joy of mafia. [Roll Eyes] That's why I feel it's a shame that Jon choose to bag Capt. Tagon when he did. I don't think someone should be deprived of observing the rest of the game unless they actually broke a rule that could be pointed to. Banning someone because you're sick of them is a dangerous precedent to set in mafia.

P.S. I think there was a co-post there. Why wouldn't I post at GC? I posted there this morning, though it was mainly in reply to GreNME. I don't know. I'm still feeling really mixed up. I may get over it eventually or I may not. I'll be watching the main movements in the mafia game, but not scouring every thread.

Emotions run high in mafia? What, are you really going out and whacking each other?

"It's only a game, Calvin."

"I know. You should see me when I lose in real life."

Posted by Lady Jane (Member # 7249) on :

I am more and more convinced I will never play mafia.

Posted by Ela (Member # 1365) on :

Why? I can't recall something like this happening with any other mafia game. As far as I can tell, having observed from the outside, most of the games have been fun.

Have there been other instances of emotions getting out of hand?

It freaked me out, totally. I have a hard time with getting into the game-playing mode, and realizing that people were supposed to lie deliberately (which I sort of should have already thought about, before I started the game) gave me the willies. Seemed to be just me that went wacky in that game, though. I watched it play out, and everyone played quite in accord with the rules, staying friendly.

I have heard of other instances.

And there's always the general suckiness of being the first one killed in your first and only game, before you ever have a chance to do any scheming at all or even vote.

-o-

I wavered in my resolve, but I think I am re-resolved now to not play during the school year. If you all do anything fun-seeming during the summer I will think about it.

For what it's worth Trisha, I am sorry for taking that public.
