So, when one is moving to San Diego, what does one need to know?

Posted by ghost of dkw (Member # 4046) on :

Congratulations.

Hypothetically speaking, how soon might one be moving?

Posted by Lady Jane (Member # 7249) on :

You got it, then!!

Congratulations. [Smile]

And.. [Frown] (for your Minnesota friends)

Disneyland and the Griffith Park Observatory up in LA are worth regular visits...

I live here, so you should know first about apartments and stuff. How long do you plan on starying here? Do you know the area? What do you like more, East, North, South, County or the coast??

I'll be working in Mira Mesa. I want to be within 10 miles. I want to rent, and I want a nice place since I'll probably be spending a lot of time at home at first since I don't know anyone. I have $1000/mo budgeted for an apartment. I'll be working with the relocation agency to find something, but advice is welcome. [Smile]

Mainly, I'd like to know what/where to avoid.

Dude! I work in Mira Mesa! But I don't actually live in San Diego yet. I'm commuting from Orange County.

How big an apartment are you looking for? $1000 will probably get you a one-bedroom in Mira Mesa or Clairemont, but probably not a two-bedroom.

Taco shops: They are everywhere, and they rock. Alejandro's on Mira Mesa Blvd. is good, but Alejandro is constantly surly. Roberto's is better, and they have multiple locations. Closest one to Mira Mesa is on Miramar Blvd. (Rd? St?)

Casa de Bandini in Oldtown is AWESOME if you like Mexican food. Generally a long wait, but since they have a huge waiting area where they bring you complementary chips and salsa, and where you can get pretty good margaritas, it's not so bad. The prices are quite reasonable, too.

Posted by Intelligence3 (Member # 6944) on :

1 BR will do. It's just me.

Lessee, I work (!) just off Mira Mesa Blvd near Camino Santa Fe.

An on a somewhat random note, I start my shiny new job on March 14th as well. I'm supposed to be packing right now (I'm not home much these days, so I have to steal packing time when I can get it), but instead I'm loafing.

Sadly, I am not going anywhere nearly as exciting as California. So enjoy it twice as much on my behalf, okay? [Big Grin]

Posted by Intelligence3 (Member # 6944) on :

I am going to remain circumspect. I'll be an associate producer making games. I'm not sure what corporate policy and/or preferences are, and I'd hate to start spouting off in a public forum about it and find out that they prefer that I not identify myself with them. I spent too many years doing public contact for people, and I know the pitfalls of becoming an unofficial spokesman. The New York Times once quoted me out of context and made Apple look bad, and they were really mad.

I turned down a lead designer position here to take the job. I think I need to grow.

Well, grow personally. I need less sideways growth.

I3, care to talk about what you did when you worked for apple? Perhaps tell us more about this story? [Wink]

Posted by Intelligence3 (Member # 6944) on :

At the time I worked for MacSoft, the (then) number one game publisher for Macs. I never worked for Apple.

Paraphrasing somewhat:

A NYT reporter asked me at Macworld NY the year they introduced the iMac, "So do you get enough support from Apple?"

I replied, "Well, I'm sure everyone wants more support from Apple, but that's because the support we have gotten has been so excellent and has improved our business. They're doing amazing things right now, and we see a lot of growth opportunity."

The quote they ran was, "I'm sure everyone wants more support from Apple."

Lesson learned.

(Me: Boss, I swear, it was the food service knish, it was making me hallucinate!)

*remembers*

So I3 and I were having dinner down at the local dank corner bar one time several years back. I was dating "Jeff" at the time, but this was my night out with my friend, and it was just I3 and me. (They did know each other casually, but not well.) Jeff had recently started up his own tech writing company, and was aggressively pursuing contracts. He also was a total Machead.

Jeff had been driving home and noticed my car outside the bar and stopped in to say hi. I3 was wearing a MacSoft shirt, and Jeff asked him if he worked there.

On hearing an affirmative, Jeff launched into a rather long pitch about how much he loved MacSoft and that he was doing freelance tech writing, and it would basically be his dream job to write game manuals for MacSoft, and could Nate give him a contact for that sort of thing and a good word to the right ear.

Nate sat and very patiently listened to the whole thing, as Jeff was kinda hard to interrupt once he got going, and then basically said "Well that's what my job is, so, no."

Jeff looked rather nonplussed and said "Oh. Well, okay." I did not burst out laughing. But it was hard.

Since Nate's leaving soon, I wish we'd made this weekend a co-ed gathering.

Nate and Tom and Bob together would be . . . well, kind of scarey, actually. [Angst] Especially if Tom grew his hair out a little. And dyed it brown.

Added: Tom would need a beard, too. Nate's hair is shorter now, though. Although still not short.

I was getting extra excited about the move to San Diego because it would mean that I would live in a city with a Major League Soccer team. Now I just learned that Club Deportivo Chivas decided to go to LA instead of San Diego. I hadn't been following the news on it.

Oh, well, LA is only a couple hours away. [Smile]

(ppppst. If you're referring to multiple nicks by the term I used in speaking the other day to refer to them, it would be "dupes." Short for "Duplicate accounts." And I only use that 'cause it's what we use at work, so there's a good chance no one else will know what you're talking about. If you're not, carry on.)

Where I come from (wayyyy back in the day, admittedly), it's Dopps, short for Dopplegangers.

Of course, in Tribes it was "Smurfs," but I figured no one would get that...

Bay point is very much near a party area. I think it's close to the boardwalk and a couple of strips of bars.

The other one is pretty close to their. I think you get a lot of SD Staters there.

I only know this from a tourist's perspective.

That last complex looks pretty nifty.

And that's a pretty whirl-wind trip.

Claudia RSVP'd, by the way. I thought that was pretty funny.

Posted by Intelligence3 (Member # 6944) on :

My friend Carol's brother says the second one is across the street from a huge shopping center, so I would be close to the stores. Plus, it's 2 miles from work.

The first one is right on Crown Point in a big bay, and I could walk to the bay. It's supposed to be kind of a "party" area, with lots of younger people, bars, etc. The woman in the office there has been extra solicitous, and that's something that I like (I'm a sucker for good service). Plus, they have separate motorcycle parking! Plus, the HR person (at work) said she thought I would like living somewhere fun to start with, and she used to live just down the street from there.

Every apartment I've found so far has been ground floor, so no balconies. [Frown]

The movers did a walkthrough today. They pack my stuff on Monday the 7th and move it on Tuesday the 8th.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

I had breakfast with I3 this morning. After we left the restaurant, he was going to pick up his cat, and then head to the airport. He should be checked in by now, his plane leaves in about an hour.

I could tell during breakfast that his mind was racing a mile a minute. There's been so much to do, and then on Tuesday the movers took his stuff away, and he's been staying down with his family for the last few days, soaking up hugs and saying goodbye. His stuff isn't supposed to hit CA until the middle of the week, and then his internet isn't hooked up until 3/17, so he'll be off-line for a little longer.

rivka, he mentioned the possible shinda... if you need to get ahold of him before then let me know, and I'll send you his number.

Nate and I have been friends for a long time, and it's going to be weird not to see him regularly. We've had our spats, certainly, but we've mostly just shook them off. We sit down to talk and suddenly hours are gone. I know this is a good move for him, both career-wise and probably personally as well. Time for a change, to try something new. And what an exciting way to do it! But I'll miss him, very much. Good luck, Nate. [Smile]

ElJay, I think I'll let the poor guy settle in. Anyway, at this point, the Shinda plans go as follows:

April 5 (I have the afternoon off) -- buy food
April 7/8 -- cook food
April 9 -- serve and eat food with fun people

[Big Grin]

Posted by Stan the man (Member # 6249) on :

I guess I3 and I (if he wants too) would have to hang out later. I just did the math and found out I have duty April 9th. [Grumble] I don't have much room to swap duty because the first class in my section is not standing duty. His chief placed him "on call." Therefore, it lowers my section down to 2 supervisors (the third is going out to sea w/ the Nimitz), and me as the duty section "dirty blue shirt" leader. Though I do have to admit that being the senior guy does have its perks [Big Grin] .

Maybe Cory.....hmmmm. I'll have to see what I can do and what strings I can pull.
