So we have a 5.1 channel surround system that we acquired a few months ago. I was given some High end floor and rear speakers that i am VERY happy with, so the only speakers that i have needed to use out of the box that came with the receiver (It's a damn fine receiver) was the center channel speaker and the subwoofer. No problems with the SW as the large front floor speakers i have pack a pretty punch in and of itself.
Ok now to to the help. My Center channel speaker is crap. i wish to upgrade but don't know what brands to look for, dimensions, wattage, etc (my other speakers are YAMAHAS but a quick look at the Yamaha website tells me they seem to have steered away from the market a good deal so i cannot find a match). Could someobdy recommend good center channel speaker goodness.
quick knowledge on my system. The receiver is a 750 watt system (150x5). My rears are 140 watts, 8ohms, the fronts are 200 watts max 8ohms. so yea.

It's easiest to match brands, but not necessary. I have a Cerwin Vega, still working great after 10 years. I don't have info on specific models at this point.
I've also had great luck with Onkyo speakers, but I have a matched set of them.
Both are fairly clunky-looking - I like that in a speaker.
However, I'd reccomend looking into Klipsch. I have two front speakers from them (I use them as surrounds) that are great. If I was buying a complete set, I'd start there.

I like the B & W 700-series loudspeakers. Of all the speakers at the C.E.S. show in Vegas, I thought they had the best sound.

Advent... they were origninally designed by Klipsch. Cheap and very good.

I can't help you with wattage and so forth because that depends on your system requirements...look it up in the manual.
As far as sound quality, I love Infinity speakers, and I had a pair of bookshelf speakers from them when I was in the Army...I loved teh crisp, clear sound I got from them. The center channel isn;t important from a volume standpoint....most of the volume wil come from the R and L speakers, as well as the SW.....but whatever you go with make sure they ahve a good sound quality.
My best frined swaers by Boston Acoustic, and he is a professional DJ....as in he works at Pleasure Island at Disney. I he alos has Cerwin Veagas that he likes, too.

Speaking of speakers and surround sound...
1) Does anyone here remember Tandberg Facet speakers? I had a set (they were stolen) and they were by far the nicest sounding speakers I've ever owned. They were shaped like an assymetrical 12-sided spheroid. If you put them in a corner or up near the edge where the ceiling and two walls met, you got this amazing bass response from them too, despite their small size.
I'd love to find another pair of those things, even though they'd probably need to have the speaker cloth replaced by this time.
2) Surround sound question: I was thinking of (eventually) buying a used Yamaha surround sound receiver one of these days. Reason for Yamaha is that everything I've ever owned by them has been really good. But should I look at other brands? What kinds of features should one look for? I don't really need high-end stuff IMHO. I mean, modern amplifier circuits are so clean anyway only the true audiophile could ever detect a difference between good stuff and really great stuff.
So...suggestions on what to look for?
Should I get a used higher-end unit or a brand new lower end unit for the same price?
Does anyone care?

The low-end Onkyos are great, both receivers and matched speaker sets. I have two of their receivers and one of their speaker sets. No problems with any of them. They don't have the cute little engineered speaker boxes - they go with fairly large size horns and tweeters. If you want cute looking or tiny size, they aren't for you. Basically the engineering is all spent on sound quality.

Another weird one.... Anyone remember speakers that were made from a large flat sheet of mylar. Standing about 7' tall. Looked like cloth-covered bulletin boards?
A friend had them. I kept threatening to use a thumb tack to stick a note up on them.

Bob, I had great luck with both the brand that Dag mentioned, and with Pioneer.
For speakers, if clarity is important to you (as it is to me), I highly recommend the Infinity brand. I had a pair of those book end speakers and they blew every other pair I have ever had away. They are not made for extremely heavy bass, although they have a great bass range too, but the clarity of the mids and highs are amazing. I listen to all sorts of music, from big band and swing to classical, as well as a lot of popular music (dance), and I wish I still had my Infinity's.
