Bob and I are done with our pre-marital counseling! We expected at least three more sessions, but our counselor told us that since we’d already discussed just about everything that is normally covered in said sessions we might as well save ‘em and come back six months after the wedding. She thinks by then we’ll have issues. [Big Grin]

Ah -- you won't need them in six months either! I mean -- that's what you have Hatrack for, isn't it? Everyone gets their advice HERE first!

6 months later. . .

Bob: Dana drives like a madwoman.

Dana: So do you.

Six months later...

Dana: I just feel like I don't know Bob anymore... It's almost as if he's some sort of asexual yellow sponge!!

Bob: I can't stand it. At least once a week she starts preaching at me and everyone else in earshot.

Obviously they'll need counseling when Dana falls madly in love with LavaLamp.

This is totally not what I thought this thread was going to be about. Dana, is it somewhere else? If you don't brag it up, I'm gonna. Unless, of course, you tell me not to. [Razz]

ElJay, please do! Especially if it's what I think it is.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Nope. Her news, her call. If I cross the line, it gives her permission to do it later.

Besides, I already got chided once for saying something prematurely here, I ain't doing it again. [Embarrassed]

(Added: Not like this isn't just as bad, but ya know. I can only behave so much at a time.)

Now I didn't mean to imply this wasn't real news! Don't go putting words in my mouth. [Razz]

The more I think about this, the more I bet I'm in trouble already. Maybe I should edit out everything.

Now Dana, that's not telling me to keep my mouth shut. You have to be pretty blunt, ya know, I'm a bit dense.

Does this mean that you can marry you and Bob?

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

If they got married in MN, I could perform the ceremony. I am a licensed officiant. But then I couldn't be the maid of honor, and heaven forbid I might get to pick my own outfit out. [Wink]

Besides, dkw wants to be married by a minister. Picky, picky.

I’ve been legal to officiate at weddings for five years now. (Think of this as like getting tenure.) When we got engaged the kids in the parish did a hilarious impersonation of me performing the ceremony – “Do you, Bob, take me, Dana” “you may now kiss . . . me!”

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

*giggle*

Out of curiosity, would that be legal? (Both in terms of church policy and US law?)

And if it is, could you also stand in as proxy for the groom?

"Do I, Dana, acting for Bob, take me, Dana . . ." *dizzy*

Congratulations on the ordination and the counseling!

Hey, dkw, you're still up and posting? I called you an hour and a half ago and left you a message. Wassa matter, you don't want to talk to me?

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

Did you try calling my real phone? The cell phone is in my purse, so if I'm at home and it's in a different room I don't always hear it.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Oooh, lookit dkw's pretty post-count.

Posted by ghost of dkw (Member # 4046) on :

I think I'll leave it that way for awhile.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Which raises a different point. Can a ghost officiate at a wedding?

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

I never actually dial the phone, I just find the right number on the caller ID and hit redial. So I called whichever number you called me from last. [Big Grin]

Also, you have a ghost? Don't you have to be dead to have a ghost?

Anyway, go listen to your message and then just post "yes" or "no." I'm lazy, I don't want to find your real number.

*scans handy-dandy "What Officiants Need to Know" flyer from the Iowa Department of Public Health, Bureau of Vital Records*

Hmmm. It doesn't say anything about needing to be alive. You can't be a riverboat captain, but it doesn't say you can't be a ghost.

Posted by ghost of dkw (Member # 4046) on :

Oh wait. "physically present" might be a problem.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Why can't you be a riverboat captian?

Have I asked you that before?

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

"Must be physically present to win!"

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Probably because she hasn't had riverboat captain training.

Posted by ghost of dkw (Member # 4046) on :

ElJay -- yes. I was going to suggest that.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Okay, I totally bust out laughing at that one. rivka, you win for the night.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Cool, Ghostie, I'll take care of it.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

[Big Grin]

By the way, buried up there I asked a serious question.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

You?!?! No wonder she missed it. [Wink]

Posted by ghost of dkw (Member # 4046) on :

Technically, I guess you could be a riverboat captain as long as you were also "An Iowa judge, magistrate, or associate judge serving on the supreme court, court of appeals, or district court;" or "An individual ordained or designated as a leader of a religious faith, regarless of the state of residence or service."

But they're very specific that just being a riverboat captain does not qualify.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

*giggle* Actually, I elsewhere today I posted a thread titled "Serious Question" and subtitled "Yes, I do have those sometimes." [Big Grin]

Posted by ghost of dkw (Member # 4046) on :

No, I don't think I can officiate at my own wedding. Although it doesn't actually specify . . . I wonder if anybody's tried it?

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

You could be the test case. But Cindy and Ben would probably be a bit hurt.

Posted by ghost of dkw (Member # 4046) on :

Yeah, only fifty or so of my close friends and relatives are clergy. Why don't I just do it myself? [Big Grin]

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Now that would be micromanaging a wedding.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :

And it would be soooo cool. [ROFL]

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

I, for one, would be highly amused to see Dana perform her own wedding. Of course, if the state decided such a thing is not legal, then she and Bob would be living in sin! [No No]

Posted by ghost of dkw (Member # 4046) on :

And, under Iowa law, if a wedding is performed by someone not authorized to do so “every member of the wedding party” can be fined. I really would like to see them try to justify that, though. They’re going to fine my flower girl if I have someone shady officiate?
