Hi, Hippygirl! Welcome to Hatrack. [Smile]

Steve, "proving existence" here at Hatrack refers to meeting two people in person, each of which has already been "proven real" themselves. This line of proof traces back to the original "real people" who were at an OSC BootCamp for Writers way back in the good old days.

So, to qualify, you have to meet at least two people (IRL) who have met others who have met other who have -etc.- tracing all the way back to two of the Boot Camp participants.

Wow.... I've never felt so unreal

Posted by scottneb (Member # 676) on :

Ya' know Jay, because of your blindness, you've never really 'seen' anyone.

You're the most unreal person here.

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Jay, it's a weird and complicated system. I had to take notes. [Smile] I'm still not sure whether I understand it.

No worries. A lot of people aren't "real" yet by this system. *shrugs

Posted by scottneb (Member # 676) on :

...too bad about the blindness thing too. [Wink]

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

maybe it's more of a feeling problem then blindness [Cool]

I wonder if I'm real...

I've met:

Jon Boy and Ruth
hansenj
T_Smith
mackillian
Rivka
Pat
advice for robots
Amka
Trisha
mr_porteiro_head and beverly
Raventh

That's all I can recall off the top of my head...surely a bunch of them are real. It's kinda like 6 degrees of separation, I guess.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

"Crunchy"?!? [Eek!]

Did you bite her? We've been needing a way to initiate newbies since Slash left.

sm, I believe ALL the people on your list are real; thus you surely are.

Hehe, maybe the word crunchy is an east coast thing?

I read it as happygirl too... welcome! I like hippies.

You might exist, SR. You just haven't proved it yet.

And I knew what dpr meant by crunchy, so I don't think it's East Coast. [Smile]

welcome hippygirl
when I read "happy girl" I thought I knew someone named that, well I do, allegra, just can't remember who says it.

OK, complicated reality question.

Persons R1 and R2 are real.

Person X meets persons Y and Z, none of whom are real.

Persons Y and Z meet persons R1 and R2, so Y and Z are real.

Does X become retroactively real, because they have met two people who are now real, or do the reality-inducing people have to be real at the time of the meeting?

Dagonee

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

I believe that person X becomes real. The reasoning is that meeting two distinct people means that they can both vouch that you are real. If you just meet one, you could be an alter-ego of that person. If a group is not reality-linked back to the main group, the sub-group could all be one person with multiple usernames.

So each though Y and Z didn't become real until after they met X, if they are willing to vouch for X X becomes real.

HI! BYE!

Posted by sarcasticmuppet (Member # 5035) on :

Ohhh...that is complicated, maybe we should discuss the morality of retroactive realism in a gay marriage thread. [Wink] [Big Grin]

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

That was my thought as well, ElJay. It means we could set up a complicated pattern in which a single person meeting a single real jatraquero could make dozens of people real. Kind of like playing Go.

That would be so cool.

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

What if you meet A B and C?

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

I would go to DallasCon....but I live in Missouri....I need a meeting of the Jatraqueros in Missouri(preferably someplace close to St. Louis; within 80 miles of St. Louis) but that probably won't happen and I can't organize it...

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Dag, that is NOT the way it works. The people who are validating your existance have to have been real when they met you. If they weren't real then, then it doesn't count.

[Big Grin] Nice try though.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

I'm self-centered enough to not really care. When I meet two real Jatraqueros, the rest of you will become Dag-Real, and that's all that matters.

So far it's just bunbun, though.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

there's at least one hatracker in st. louis, and I think his wife and son are registered. (but could be wrong on that)

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Steve, I think there are people coming from around that area. Maybe you would like to carpool with them. [Big Grin] *is pushy* *will back off if there's a reason you can't make it*

Kwea, you're the only one I've ever heard say that. What's your evidence? If you're claiming there's been a ruling on the matter, I think you need to back it up to Slash, since he set the rules.

ketchupqueen, you do realize SteveRogers is a teenager, right? I'm not sure exactly how old he is, but there's a good chance his parents wouldn't be thrilled with the idea of him hopping in a car with a bunch of internet strangers and driving down to Texas for the weekend. And a lot of people, myself included, would not even consider picking up a minor and taking them to something like this. He will probably have to wait until there is something nearby and/or he's of age.

Posted by ketchupqueen (Member # 6877) on :

Oh. Well, my parents would have been okay once I was 16, as long as I brought a friend. But I understand that reasoning. I might or might not let my own child do that, depending on past history and how responsibly they were.

Posted by Dan_raven (Member # 3383) on :

I doubt that Steve Rogers is real because the other so-called-real person is "Hippy Chick" and we all know that Hippy's are a fey creature of our imaginations, and female Hippies, or a Hippy Chick can only be found in the imaginations of hundreds of lonely stoned folks back 40 years ago.

So, if imaginary people are the only peoply you know, you may not be real.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Dan,
I know some "real" hippies, quite a few actually.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

It isn't your child's responsibility I'd be worried about, kq. It's the 25 - 45 year old stranger's who'd be picking them up and driving them away for the weekend.

Any hatracker I've already met would be welcome to stay at my home if they were in town and needed a place to crash. I like and trust all of you. Any hatracker at all I like and trust enough that I'd meet you in a public place and take it from there. But for someone who's not a member of the community to trust one of us enough to drive their child across state lines? That just seems like a reach to me.

Posted by SteveRogers (Member # 7130) on :

See that is my dilemma......even though I spelt that wrong.....I am not old enough to drive.....and my parents wouldn't let me hop in some van with some people I haven't ever met before in my life.......to go to Texas........I need a more local convention.......somewhere in Missouri.........anywhere in Missouri would be okay........my parents would probably find someway to entertain themselves and they could drop me off.........but Texas is to far.....sorry kq [Frown]

Well, see -- I know I'm real just by virtue of meeting the patriarch Papa Moose family at KamaCon. All others there withstanding -- if you meet the Moose family -- you are definately real.

[Big Grin]
FG
(but my goal still is to someday meet OSC himself)

Posted by Jay (Member # 5786) on :

So OSC would count as one of the two then!

[Cry] I'll never be real because OSC will never come back to Utah while I'm around! [Cry]

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

I was real before I started, too, adam, 'cause I met a bunch of hatrackers at dkw's. Oh, and I had met Bob the year before when he had dinner at my parent's, and obviously I already knew dkw. So I was real as soon as I joined regardless.

Mom, of course, had not only met dkw, Bob, and myself, but she had her picture taken with Mooselet, which I believe equals automatic reality, even before she registered.

Since Mooselet rarely travels too far without either Mama or Papa (or both), I think that's accurate, ElJay. [Wink]
